Is it pull the net straight back or push down and throw to the right with the left hand before release? It appearsi to me it's not just a pull back as stated?
@CaptainCody78 күн бұрын
Yeah it is down and to the left with your left hand. Straight forward and slightly up with your right hand.

Thanks for the tips, I live on the Great Lakes and I was looking into getting a trolling settup this summer. Thanks a lot for the tips. If you would know can you run flashers on dipsy divers
@CaptainCody78 күн бұрын
Cool, I use to fish in Lake Erie for steelhead and Lake Ontario for Salmon. On my website I wrote an article about the best lures to use to catch salmon in the great lakes. It is wild up there with the dipsy divers, planner boards, and downriggers. In Alaska it is just one line per fisherman.

As you demonstrated ow to tie the chain onto your anchor I noticed that there is slack chain towards the head. Is that deliberate and if so why?
@CaptainCody79 күн бұрын
It is not really deliberate it is just hard to pull perfectly tight. Either way tight or a little slack will work.
@davesmith93659 күн бұрын
@@CaptainCody7 So effectively, the ties you used are taking all of the load put on the anchor.

Sorry Capn Cody, I love most of your vids, but this one is BOGUS! the rig you show in the beginning is NOT what you show for the rigging vid. Which do you REALLY use? Sorry, but I pay attention to details, and I'm calling you OUT!
@CaptainCody79 күн бұрын
Hi, are you talking about the halibut rig or the mooching rig? Both are what I use and both work great! I show that I am using the rig and catching fish in this video and others for the mooching rig. Which part of the rig do you not like?

Yea it will work. You just have to raise your arms up a bit more as you are throwing.

What rods are you using for trolling? I seen they were ugly sticks, are they Medium Heavy? What’s the action? What rods were you using casting the bait.
@CaptainCody7Ай бұрын
Yeah, lots of them are ugly sticks. I do not know the exact action and weights off hand. On my website I do include lots of this information with articles about the best spinning rods and convectional rods.

Leaving the pin bones in is just crazy. So easy to remove and this kid has no cue on how to clean salmon the right way.
@CaptainCody7Ай бұрын
It is likely more that you have about an hour to clean 36 salmon, 6 halibuts, and rockfish. And you only have about an hour to clean them. This is only part of the job of a charter captain. For this reason this is a good way to fillet salmon and not much meat is wasted which is the important thing.

What are the orange life vests u are wearing there?
@CaptainCody7Ай бұрын
Good question, the red one is a Mustang Khimera life jacket. My dad wears it with his Garmin inReach and PLB attached. On my website I have articles about the best life jackets and PLBs. The one I am wearing an A/M 24 inflatable life jacket. Most of the time now I wear a fanny pack with a PLB in it. It was calm that day but we were 40 miles offshore at one point. Lots of days it is not calm, unexpected thunderstorms, etc so it is good to be prepared.

It is hard to say without seeing you throw. Make sure the net is 100 percent untangled each time. Make you are holding the proper part of the net in your right and left hands.

This video was very very helpful. Just caught my first king from the info on here. Funny thing is I was using a baby manual downrigger (the Scotty they use on canoes and such) and a 6lb cannon ball. trolling around 65ft at 2.3mph. My tackle was a blue fox #5 spinner about 3 feet past the ball. Hooked up almost immediately after dropping ball and driving for 30 seconds. Thanks man 🙏
@CaptainCody72 ай бұрын
That is awesome! I have never heard of someone using a spinner on a downrigger. That is epic!

The Danforth anchor you thought was aluminum, is actually a Magnesium alloy. They’re made by Fortress. They’re like 1/2the weight of the galvanized version, and just as strong. I’ve been using a 7 lbs on a 24’ boat with ho problems.
@CaptainCody72 ай бұрын
Interesting, thanks for the information!

I have a Bruce, dont use the safety method and its never got stuck. If its dug in good I just run over the anchor or spin the boat 180 degrees and yank it out.

the planer or hydrofoil are called stabilizers, there is one on each side of the boat. They stabs are attached half way up the trolling pole. The downriggers are called Gurdies....the wire line can be one, one and half to two fathom apart. for Sockeye fishing, you want them to be one fathom apart and the leader would be 1 fathom from the clip to the flasher. you would set up leaders differently for the different species you are fishing for.
@CaptainCody73 ай бұрын
Yeah, you are correct, I called the stabilizers planers by mistake.

What are some of the advantages of tying the chain to the anchor instead of zip tying it?
@CaptainCody73 ай бұрын
Zip ties will work. As long as you have a system that will hold when on anchor and break when the anchor is stuck you are good. It is good if you double tie the zip ties back on the chain so you do not leave plastic in the ocean.
