When talking about Ageratina, half the pictures (and all the ones with pollinators on them) actually show Boneset (Eupatorium.)

“It doesn’t matter that much if it’s a native vs. non-native plant.” Not true. Native plants make a HUGE difference. If you want to attract bees, plant natives only. Non-natives attract 10% of what natives attract.

21:48 WOW! New knowledge unlocked! I’ve attracted leaf cutter bees to my yard and I can now ID their cuts, I’ve been blaming it on a caterpillar but that never made sense… wish I took pics… next year…

This tells us the “what” on the scientific method of how they got the information, but a lot on “why” and what the data showed. We want to understand native bees, not the scientific method used to get it. We believe you did it right, so tell us what we have learned about native bees.

Phenology!!!!! Such an interesting and amazing science!! As a Limnologist myself...... I wish there were more study on the development of plants and algal blooms in lakes as it relates to phenology...... After many many years of observations, I believe there is often a direct correlation of algal blooms in some of the large lakes that I have worked with and the flowering of late summer early fall plants such as goldenrod. The input of pollen into lakes has a significant affect on blue-green algae blooms imho.

Our garden group made bubble bee homes last year. This year my first sighting of a Bombus Vosnesenskil yellow face and black body but with the last segment of the bee yellow. Never saw this type before. I have California poopy this year along with ice plants and many other ground cover.

I just found a bumblebee in my basement. My daughter and I have tried nursing it back to health. It is really lethargic, slow. It must just be cold, IDK. Just figured I'd like to learn more about them so found this video. This is pretty deep for me but I did find it very interesting, deep in features, explanations. Thanks a bunch.

Could combine with getting pictures of as many types of bumbles as possible at the same time? I know watching them in the front yard, it's amazing how many different color patterns you can find on them (not that I can tell one from another).

After traveling to Singapore, it was obvious that growing edibles on public property was a good way to reduce the public cost to maintain it and benefit those in the area. I've been growing fruit trees in the city park.

In a similar fashion of fighting fire with fire, could we use native aggressive species to contain growth?

Great presentation, thank you! As a botanist/ecologist, I could not help but notice that most of your photos show these bees on exotic introduced garden plants (as I noticed in my photos too)...and I mourn the rapid disappearance of many native plant species...IUCN and Kew suggest the rate of extinction in plants is far faster in the Anthropocene than animals...I can certainly see why. I hope bee lovers will "get" that bees and plants evolved together, and if the pollinators are diverted to the pretty garden plants that every other animal that depends on native plants is imperiled when native plants disappear, and invasive plants like knapweeds, hawkweeds, dandelions, and clovers take over. Soo much change in the landscape in a couple of 100 years...what are we doing? What will another 100 years do?

Not sure where you are but our community here in KY is finding our native plant groups are growing rapidly and we are so excited to be increasing native bee habitat. We've found that just a few small gardens in a neighborhood helps keeps bee species (especially ones that don't roam far) from being isolated.

Doug the pond behind our house just had the natives and invasives all mowed down by the city. One of the species was leadplant and button bush. What will be the result? Will the invasives take over? I’m having city representatives come over so I can talk to them. What should I be telling them?

Since the bees are how plants reproduce, looking at it from the plant's point of view, is it possible that a high load of very attractive non-native plants would cause diversion from native plants (also used by other animals such as lepidopterans)? I call this pollinator "theft" so to speak, enabling higher reproduction of plants that were introduced without their normal predator pressures, and thereby making more room for the invaders to establish when the native plants don't get pollinated? Studies on these plants compared with their evolved native location suggest they have much more energy to invest in reproductive processes and making room for themselves via soil and other forms of allelopathy (like the common dandelion delivering allelopathic pollen to others in its genus as Japanese research on Taraxicum is showing). Something like this was demonstrated in Costa Rica with hummingbirds going to feeders in high numbers, being drawn from the landscape, having zero pollen on them because of the alternate concentrated and convenient food source, and a subsequent decline in the highly co-evolved plants they pollinated (that are also needed by many other animals). All animals (and probably plants) operate on "opportunity cost". So this could conceivably result in a degradation factor for the whole ecology. I would love Dr. Holm's thoughts on this or any work she might know of to study this. I also wonder about introduced plants "enticing" our bees from their nests too early in the spring...if they can smell mouse nests, does smell impact the time of their emergence in the spring and subjecting them to cold or excessive energy use? Everyone loves the introduced coltsfoot that blooms earlier than any other plant here, saying "the beeezeee loooovvvee" it, but I am suspicious. Removing it from my one acre and I have more Bombus than ever before. I actually remove as many introduced species as I have time for. It deeply concerns me when some of the best experts dismiss the importance of the smaller native ground plants for not only forage, but things like ground insulation and other habitat needs as well. There are parts of Canada where there is dandelion and orchard grass as far as the eye can see. Great talk, I've been a fan of your research since before you really went "public", happy for your success, and if you are ever in Nova Scotia, look us up, we will give you a nice free cottage of your own on the water to use depending on when you are here. Bravo.
