To influence others- I put up a sign in front of my yard, I joined the local Land Trust and through them, adopted a local intersection and planted for pollinators there, and I contacted the local elementary school principal (as a member of the Land Trust) and he was enthusiastic about having a pollinator garden at the school. He connected me with a local Girl Scout Troop who will help me plant at the school. I would say, get involved in the community and then leverage that to get you in to other places. JUST DO IT.

Ive put about 1/3 of my yard into local prairie plants..and my bad 1/3 into food production with no chemicals...isnt going well...but im doing it. This year was BRUTAL on baby birds..it was so hot their 2nd set of eggs actually cooked.

@@sislertx gj I don't use chemicals either and I don't till or fertilizer. I just help feed the biology in the soil.

I am reclaiming my 3 acres of pasture where I built my small home by planting native grasses, native forbs & native trees with an emphasis on Oaks & other native trees. With a small pond as a water source, I have attempted to provide food & shelter to as many species as possible. I have brush piles & dead falls and undisturbed areas of native brush for habitat as well as my own privacy.

Lovely! So glad this was recored as my internet went out about halfway through the actual presentation. This makes me even more excited about my gardening endeavors. I'm working on removing some nandina bushes that were here when we moved in right now and removing another section of lawn and converting it to native plants as well. I live on less than an acre but I'm having so much fun with this. I'm going to start tracking the caterpillars I see and following the food chain and checking out plant specialists more. Speaking of which, I had a common milkweed volunteer in my garden bed this year and saw two monarch caterpillars on it. Thanks for the presentation! I'm sharing it with friends and family.

Another way to get people interested in creating these habitats is to invite them into yours - give tours, talk about the plants and the insects as you see them. Then offer them something from the habitat to take home with them.

The real problem is that no one cares about this issue. The very few of us who truly work to better our surroundings for nature are far outnumbered by the apathetic majority. People can't even be bothered to put a plastic bottle into the recycling receptacle that's right next to the garbage can. We need to find a way to _make_ people care & be concerned about this; it's the only way to start a movement towards change. To quite the Lorax: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Pure and simple.

Goldenrod is a key species in my area. I have tons of it and usually have had my 8 acres of old pasture fields mowed in the fall to keep it open. I will skip the mowing this fall because of what you said about native bees overwintering in goldenrod stems. But with lots of autumn olive, rosa multiflora, and choke cherry, what should be my long-term plan to keeping the field open so that the goldenrod and milkweed profits?

Thank you! No mow for two years now. Does it matter what type of oak tree is planted, whether it is native or not? There are hundreds of cultivated non-native Texas Live Oak being planted in areas surrounding residential areas in Maricopa County, Arizona. Manageable trees I suppose is the idea. Lots of acorns, do I plant one or try to find a native oak?

Native is the way to go. Best way is 70% native or more and rest can be others. From what I've been reading is we need at least 70% native for our insects and animals to grow good
