Yeah, listen, I can relate to her and the mindset she's bringing to this situation. When I was a "casual" dog owner, I'd go right back to the story I knew about the dog, or the tapes I played about their behavior. "He's just little and intimidated." "He's a mess." Now I watch body language, facial expression and behavior and I read my dog in the moment. I'm not looking to a story to explain behavior. I'm looking at what's happening NOW to dictate how I respond. That's it.

My chihuahua is scared of all water. He will run through a shallow river on a hot day but I want to use my big bathtub as a way for him to excersis by swimming in the winter. How do I do this with the bathtub. Do I have to be in it also

I like how you had to explain that you weren't hurting her (around 8:40). Heelers are such vocal drama queens even when you don't touch them!!

Had and raised Blue Heelers for some years. Also had GSDs and Belgian Malinois. All great dogs, very intelligent. All three breeds need mental and physical stimulation, a job to do basically. They thrive on the work so to speak. They are not for lazy or neglectful owners! Recently adopted a female GSD who has never been socialized to people or other dogs. Its a project of love, attention, patience, and time. Shes made great strides in just 6 weeks but will take many more months of daily work. I am training her with all German commands as did my father with all our GSDs. It works very well for directives, guidance, commands, and praise as well.

How do we stop the nipping? Is it easy or takes time? Wondering if this would be the right fit for our family with two little kids.

I’m sorry, it’s great that people love the breed, however, there a working dog! They need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Lots, not what a normal dog needs. Woods, country, streams, oceans, pasture, mountains, desert. Free! Free, off leash.

Careful! Heelers are notorious for killing other pets and wildlife! If you have one, be a responsible pet owner and citizen, socialize and train them to be respectful of other animals, kids and other people.

You should not force an interaction with a dog by being overly forward, don't rush a dog and get in their face, don't scare a dog and make them feel crowded or cornered. That's a recipe for making the dog act defensively. Give a dog a chance to warm up to you and invite an interaction, especially a scared or nervous dog. If the dog bites you or someone else you've not given them the choice of interacting or invited interaction in a calm welcoming way, you will create the scenario you don't want, aggressive or fearful reactions. It's totally unfair to the dog.

Had a female red in dallas for 13 years, she went to work with me and was a dream. The dog doesn’t see her as the decision maker protector. See this a lot with women and men, they are not the right type of personality where the dog respects them and doesn’t react unless they do.

I agree with @KKrohn about the use of compressed air. I would go further and say that DCTK9 evoked a trama/fear reaction in Foxtrot. In the video this trainer starts off right, but the second part of the video skipped the boarding part. The reaction of Foxtrot to him at the end was clearly one of fear. Although the trainer said "I'm not doing anything", clearly he had been doing something during the week (using compressed air) that elicited that extreme response. The owner herself seemed to have dreams about the dog that do not fit the breed. Hopefully everything all worked out well in the end.

She’s such a good girl! Just a bit of correction and she got it! She wasn’t hurt she was startled by being corrected! She isn’t afraid to correct her owner when the owner tries to stop her from going crazy on other dogs so why can’t the owner do the same to her when the benefit is so extreme?

This was wonderful but I feel her pain. She is not a city dog. Her job is to herd cattle and run for hours a day and they are very protective of family. but they are so smart they will succumb to different environments. And she did. She is a beautiful girl. Not an apartment dog. She did real good.

I have a 3/4 blue heeler and 1/4 Australian Shepherd mix. She’s my first dog. I love her so much. When I would walk her if another dog barked, growled and lunged she would too. So I taught her “leave it” I would have her sit and give her treats for calm behavior. After two walks she got it. She will be two in a couple of months so she’s still learning. I have her in dog agility classes which are amazing for her. She loves it. The class works her mind and her body.
