Hey man dirt tricks just put out a new video about installing that cam chain tensioner. I didn't see it your install video, that you removed the spider washer from within that retaining cap. That thing is supposed to be removed. They have a new video on the Norton 901 and he shows how to take that spider washer out. They told me to do it but when I did the install that washers really in there you kind of got to put a lot of pressure on to get that thing out and I didn't do it so I'm headed out to the garage to take it out or their cam chain tensioner does not seat properly. Thought I'd give you a heads up since you're out getting it done. The video is dirt tricks USA timing chain tensioner install plus sound comparison

I really can’t remember seeing the spider washer. I haven’t had any issues though. If it is in there and tensioner not seated well, wouldn’t i notice something wrong when riding? What you think
@rayrokni4 ай бұрын
You the best, i took it out and saw the spider washer at the bottom of the cap. Use needle nose pliers and removed it. Put it back together. Thanks a million.
@atticushexcel95674 ай бұрын
@@rayrokni I think that it is an issue with the DT CCT seating properly. It is a pain in the butt to change with the tank on though AND it might just be me, but I honestly think the CC is even quieter now. But that could be me justifying having to faff around with making the change. I don't think that spider washer would have fallen out though. It was a small hassle getting it out which is why I didn't do it the first time - it is NON destructive though so that's good. I would say it is approximately 1 mm thick and it may not matter, but I was very direct with them about whether I should remove it before installation and they told me for sure yes and notified me about the upcoming vid with the 901. I was a little pissed they didn't document it better. It took me about 5 minutes to change it. The only issue I had was getting my big hands in there and not losing that small washer and making sure the tensioner stayed in the correct position. I did it all by feel - couldn't see anything. I did use a torque wrench at 32 ft-lbs to tighten it up. I didn't bother with torquing the allen head bolt though. Just by feel not crushing the washer for sure.
@rayrokni4 ай бұрын
Yup, after your warning about the spider washer, i did go and take the dt cct out and sure enough the washer was at bottom of the cap. There is no way it could have come out by itself. Bought with needle nose pliers and took it out. And yes, it’s a bitch to work on it with the tank on, i actually took out the tank bolts so i could just pry the tank a little to get my socket to seat properly. Couldn’t use my torque wrench though, so just went snug. Will get a different torque wrench to make sure. I do remember in the dt manual they did talk about spider washer but no real emphasis on having to take it out. When i hear washer, I’m thinking a round metal disk that is loose and falls out easily, not something that is pressure fitted. So i probably did see the washer but didn’t think it should come out since it looked permanent. I had ridden 1000 miles with it in there, i don’t think it caused any damage🤷♂️. And you are right, it does sound quieter. Thanks again for the warning.
@atticushexcel95674 ай бұрын
@@rayrokni Cool. It was like it seated better. When I first removed the washer it was WAY louder and I was super pissed, but after about 2 minutes I think it found the right spot. Hi Ray, I wonder, how do you rate both mods now after having tested? Thanks, John
@rayrokni5 ай бұрын
Hey john, i feel the bike is running richer than oem setup. It isn’t running as hot and fuel consumption has got more. It has done what i wanted it to do, so I’m happy with that. Having said that, i feel i should have gotten the pro version which gives you a control switch on the handlebar that enables you to fine tune the AFR. Basically it gives you ten maps. Map three is oem values, then the higher maps will give you richer settings and the lower maps 2&1 make it leaner. As far as the tensioner, it has been working fine, i really did that to get rid of the noise that felt like someone had thrown a bucket of nuts and bolts into the engine😁, and the reviews out there that indicated oem tensioner failure. My 2022 model never had any tensioner issues after 15000 miles, so i don’t know if that’s an actual failure or just hype. Either way, it did get rid of the noise, which is why i did it. So I’m happy with that also.

What's up Ray! I love the bike binders and use them on my trailer - hilariously NO ONE at Eurosports in Asheville had ever seen them before. I bought a small Harbor Freight trailer years ago for hauling kayaks and now have converted it for my 890 as well simply by adding the binders - although can't haul kayaks and bike. She is a big girl. Will be starting the install of the FuelX today - got to take that stupid tank off. Also will be changing out the Rottweiler air box for the Powercell Rally airbox and the Cat delete. However, I am holding off on the Cam Chain Tensioner for more information. One of the sales guys at DirtTricks said there is a spider washer that needs to be removed so it seats properly. Saw an install video in which one of the commenters mentioned this as well. Now I am scared to install it without confirmation. I don't even know what the spider washer is honestly and the TDC is not even mentioned in the manual nor have I seen any installs on the 890 that worries about it. Wonder if you are traveling to MMM?
