Since the rivers are all in flood rewatched your vid. Alan do you think it’s necessary to use a fluorocarbon leader when targeting salmon in the Rakaia mouth/gut area with 20lb mono line ?
@AllanBurgessFishingmag11 ай бұрын
Hi Grant, I've never used a fluorocarbon leader when salmon fishing. All the salmon I have caught have been taken on 20-pound monofilament - mostly Maxima Ultragreen. The most salmon I have taken in a season was 14 fish a few years ago! If the rivers were low and clear I would fish a smaller zed spinner or size 4 feathered lures but still use the 20-pound mono. The modern way to do it these days when fishing braid, is to employ a fluorocarbon leader measuring approx. two-rod lengths and tied to your braid with an FG knot.

Great video thanks. Love using light gear but tend to go heavier out there as its pretty savage and crowded and lots of pressure just to monster the fish in as fast as possible. People just cast out across you as you reel the fish in
@AllanBurgessFishingmag Жыл бұрын
Great comment. I know what you are saying. That happens when you get a lot of anglers fishing very close together, especially when many fish are caught. No one wants to miss out. I remember years ago at the mouth of the Rakaia River one Waitangi Weekend (1995 I think). There were several hundred anglers fishing the surf, shoulder to shoulder, on the south side of the river mouth. Suddenly dozens of anglers hooked up all at once on salmon. Nobody wanted to stop casting for fear of missing out. There were salmon swimming between people's legs, crossed lines and massive tangles everywhere. Sportsmanship went out the window. Many people just "lost the plot".

Can you use monofilament on that nail knot tool?
@fishingmagconz Жыл бұрын
Yes, Mike, you shore can. You must always lubricate the mono before pulling the knot up tight or heat will damage the monofilament and weaken your knot.
@rudyruiz9521 Жыл бұрын
After the wraps, I prefer to leave the fly on the tool to sinch the knot tight. Also, don't forget to wet your knot.
@AllanBurgessFishingmag Жыл бұрын
Hi, I always attach a 15-20lb monofilament leader of about two-rod lengths and join it to the braid with an FG knot. In the past, I used a double uni-knot. The FG knot slips effortlessly through the rod guides.

What is the name of the knot that is formed when attached to a lure? If not using this tool would anyone tie this knot freehand when tying on a lure. I ask because I'd like to see its knot strength compared to other lure or swivel attaching knots but don't know what to look up. Thank you.

A good bit of info there Allan? I have not fished the Hurunui River mouth as I do not have a boat. It is good to know what the mouth looks like and access too.
@fishingmagconz Жыл бұрын
You are welcome. Another important consideration is that the Hurunui River has a different catchment. It can sometimes be running clear when the bigger braided rivers further south are discoloured and unfishable.

@fishingmagconz Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment. Veltics are good blade spinners and if they are working for you then stick with them. I reckon we anglers all have our favourites and so fish them the most. Therefore it stands to reason that we will catch the most fish on the lure we fish most often.

@fishingmagconz2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can catch sea-run brown trout at places like the mouth of the Rakaia River at this time of year (winter time). However, they will be bigger in the spring and summer. I have caught sea-run browns during winter in the past by walking along the seaward side of the Rakaia River lagoon and casting a black and gold Toby - see this video filmed there during winter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIemc2RrfMeLf9k
