Fantastic to have people watch it in 3D! Burder did make some nice dioramas which fortunately are on fade resistant film stock. These could be nicer if he released the same scenes from the original negatives at high resolution. I assume he still has them. The old VM reels' original negatives and slides were trashed. Glad you like it!

It is always good to see different ways of acting in a drama. The styles of acting change with time and people's sensibilities. It is possible to appreciate alternate styles of acting. Each generation tends to dismiss older styles, but then they are revived sometimes as camp classics, but sometimes as great performances. So to each his own. We all tend to treasure things we saw as children, and that is also good.

If I'm being honest, even though this was a staple in my childhood, I feel like Mary Martin's version of Peter is the worst. It's one thing if it's a "tradition" to have female actors portray Peter on stage, and I can't personally speak for the actresses that came before Mary, but even as kid all I could see was a tall middle-aged woman with a lesbian haircut seemingly playing herself. She made no attempt to act like a little boy and that always bothered me. Cathy Rigby was perfect because not only was she small in stature, but she also had a gymnastics background and could do the flips and be more "all over the place" in her movements. She also made an effort to actually act like a little boy in her mannerisms and dialect. Having people like Mary or Allison Williams portray Peter, who don't make any effort to distinguish themselves as boys, I think, confuses the little kids who watch them. This why I prefer him to played by actual boys. I honestly think, despite its obvious problems, the Disney animated version was perfect in its handling of Peter and Bobby Driscoll was just perfect casting. The voice, his mannerisms, it's just perfect. Jeremy Sumpter comes in hard second, but I always felt he was too good looking as I never thought of Peter Pan as "beautiful". This is also why I prefer Disney's version of Peter. And the less said about the recent Peter Pan and Wendy on Disney Plus, the better.

Yes, indeed it is a tradition for a petite woman to play Peter. Apparently, it happened because of the early English law forbidding child actors on stage. Historically men have played women and then later women have played children or young men so the tradition goes way back Often mezzo sopranos play the male lead in early operas because of the lack of castrati for whom the roles were written. Mary Martin was the original Peter on Broadway 1954 in this musical version, so this is certainly an important historical performance. There were many other non-musical versions prior to this. The book has no description of what Peter looked like. So, everyone picks whichever version they like.

@clementj1 I thought Maude Adams was the first? No, I do understand the role reversals of men playing women and vice versa, and child actors and what not. I'm just saying when I was a kid watching this, Mary didn't seem to make any effort to play a boy in the way Cathy Rigby later did. It honestly reminds of Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen. Regardless of how she looked, if she, as an actress, had embodied the essence of a little boy, I might've believed her as Peter. Cause it really comes down to acting. Not saying she wasn't a good actress, and she certainly is a beautiful singer, but to me even as a kid, she seemed to be playing a version of herself. And I couldn't put my finger on why it bothered me so much until I saw the taped Broadway revival with Cathy Rigby.

@@kidnplay3978 According to the Wikipedia in the article Peter and Wendy: "The original stage production took place at the Duke of York's Theatre in London's West End on 27 December 1904. It starred Gerald du Maurier as Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, and Nina Boucicault as Peter.[18] Members of Peter's Band were Joan Burnett (Tootles), Christine Silver (Nibs), A.W. Baskcomb (Slightly), Alice DuBarry (Curly), Pauline Chase (1st twin), Phyllis Beadon (2nd twin). Besides du Maurier, the pirates were: George Shelton (Smee), Sidney Harcourt (Gentleman Starkey), Charles Trevor (Cookson), Frederick Annerley (Cecco), Hubert Willis (Mullins), James English (Jukes), John Kelt (Noodler). Philip Darwin played Great Big Little Panther, Miriam Nesbitt was Tiger Lily, and Ela Q. May played Liza, (credited ironically as "Author of the Play"). First Pirate was played by Gerald Malvern, Second Pirate by J. Grahame, Black Pirate by S. Spencer, Crocodile by A. Ganker & C. Lawton, and the Ostrich by G. Henson." There is an article with a complete list of Peter actors, but I can't find it again. As I say to each his own preference in performances. The art of performing changes from one era to another, so each era has it artifices that later eras deprecate. I wonder what people will say about our era's entertainment in the future.

Yes, it is rough, but the original was much worse. Unfortunately, the original had 240 vertical resolution because it used alternate half frames for each R/L frame. In addition it had significant shifts in time between the R and L frames. This is the only version in 3D available. However the 3D Film Archive might make a good restoration from the original film, so you can wait until then (if ever) to see it properly. I consider it just barely watchable, but that is a matter of opinion. A lot of work went into making it just watchable, but without a better source it cannot be further improved. There are a number of 3D videos that are only available in poorly transferred field sequential DVDs.

Nobody noticed it at the time, as we were conditioned by the usual cowboy and Indian shows. There were some few movies which treated the relationships with native Americans fairly well at that time. Many plays are reinterpreted by later generations, but the new interpretations can be good or bad. The classic story "The Yellow Wallpaper" had many interpretations. However, we can still enjoy it if we think of it as just a silly children's game and recognize that it is not portraying real native Americans. Now having a cross dresser playing Peter is considered to be evil by some people.

Yes, it does both. The director pioneered many techniques which now would seem to be cliches, but were new when he did it. Of course, the musicians and movie directors had to toe the artistic mandates under Stalin, but I think they did manage to slip through some criticism without it being noticed. Shostakovich wrote some Hebrew music, but kept it hidden until after Stalin's death. They produced masterpieces of art.
