I drive a 77 FJ40. I run Toyo Open Country MTs in a 33X10.50R15. They are perfect for this rig. Always wanted to get BfG KM2s but I was so impressed with the Toyos, I got another set when the first ones got old. Great in mud, rocks, snow, and not bad on the road either. Thanks for the fun videos!

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll look closer at the Toyos. I’ve been eyeballing the KM3’s, but my KO’s are still at about 95%. I haven’t figured out how to justify the new mud tire expense to my beautiful wife yet 😆

Yep - They aren’t good for this sort of thing, but on dirt, rock, snow and the highways, they’ve been great. Unfortunately when I was putting this rig together, I had other things in mind. I now regret not going with the KM3’s

Yup, You nailed it here. Rigs like this are so much fun, and you guys have just scratched the surface. Running safety bead rims on the Willys allows single digit pressures in those same bias ply tires, transforming traction to an almost unbelievable degree. I run 7 PSI in the 7.50-16 bias plies on my 4000# empty weight 1958 Land Rover with a Chevy LS V8 swap and it's pretty insane what it will do. Part of the fun with these rigs is trying little tweaks here and there to optimize a combination. My old Rover is even more stock than your FJ40 (still running stock springs and shackles, and the 7.50-16 tires) but I've done little things to "streamline" the undercarriage to reduce hang-ups. Wheeling this thing hard has also polished my driving skills, and I gotta say, coming back down from 40" tires, these old school rigs are more fun hands down. The other thing I love is having a super reliable rig that I've driven out to Moab twice this year, Sand Hollow, Logandale, Nev., Rubicon, Dusy Ershim, Fordyce Creek, ect... And it feels so good to unlock the hubs after every one of these and reliably cruise home, no trailer needed (This is NOT a jab at you guys, most of my friends trailer, it's just part of the fun for me). Keep up the good work !!

Where you both got stuck doesn't look like the main trail just because someone has before you doesn't make it right. Please stay on the trails , there are plenty for you both to get stuck easily. A trail work party will probably block that off it's clearly wet land.

Great to see proper old iron (not body swapped buggys) My experience with the BFG all terrains is that they work ok in most situations, except the clay. Not worth the compromise, though. I run gnarly Deestone D503 7.50-16 bias ply pizza cutters on my rock crawling, daily driving 1958 Land Rover , "Penalty Box" Yea, they are noisy, but that's what these old rigs are about !! They really work in the rough stuff, and everybody knows when I'm approaching on the road. I have beat the piss out of those tires on everything from the Rubicon, Fordyce Creek, Dusy Ershim, Tillamook Forest, Cline Buttes, Moab, Sand Hollow, and many more. Never punched a hole in one, and my old Rover is about the same size and weight as an FJ40 (4000 empty, I weighed it) That old 40 series deserves an extra set of rims with pizza cutter mudders !! (and a front locker!!)

Can you put lockers and at least a winch on the jeep?
@FJAdventurer
@FJAdventurer 5 күн бұрын
The FJ has a rear locker, but a front would help some for sure. Combine that with some mud terrains, and it would probably be unstoppable. The jeep has a pto winch on the front and a second on the rear. But they are slow, so the electric winch on the FJ is always the got-to.

Are you guys running lower pressure on your tires?
@FJAdventurer
@FJAdventurer 16 күн бұрын
Most of the time we lower our pressure down from upper 20's to the mid-teens. However, the CJ rims are designed to run on bias ply with tubes, so the rim lips don't keep sealed as well and the FJ's; therefore, we have to be little more careful on that end. We've had issues with blowing beads in the past.
@NWAdventures206

Hello, greetings from Pontassieve, province of Florence, Italy. I have a Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 with a 1.3 litre M13A petrol engine, manufactured in 2001, all original, which I often use on dirt roads on rural farms and on dirt forest roads used by loggers to get wood from the forest. With forestry tractors, with skidders and forwarders, and with forestry trucks used to transport wood! And this is even though a 4x4 off-roader with original configuration behaves very well on this type of forest and rural dirt and gravel roads!

I agree. Finally getting to build a 73 K20 that I had in storage for roughly 20 years now that my sons are grown. Picked up forever ago trying to avoid California's Smog Laws. Going with a mild build. A 4" lift with 35's and Yukon locker in the rear and Yukon limited slip in the front. I watch these amazing cut ones with 40's on coil overs with supercharged LS conversions but I dont have 75k to build it or the neck and back to offroad at that level anyway.

Yep - just get it on the road (or off), and enjoy it for what it is! 👍 That said, one thing I have to upgrade on my rig tho are the tires. I made a mistake on the KO2’s. Mud terrains in my neck of the woods are a must. But, they aren’t getting any bigger. Bigger tires means more stress. More stress means you have to beef things up. It snowballs fast.

@@FJAdventurer I agree on the tires. All my previous trucks came with AT's and I always swapped for MT's as soon as the tread was even even remotely close to being gone. Very worth the little bit of extra road noise. I am trying Cooper STT Pro's for my first go around as they got decent reviews without the Big Brand name mark ups. If they don't do well I will consider other options next go around. Hopefully will have the truck done this year and have fingers crossed with the softer Offroad Design (Alcan) custom spring lift it will be comfortable enough for my back and neck to do a fair amount of lighter to medium offroading. Hopefully I made decent build decisions. Time will tell if all the changes were well thought out over stock or not. Lol

@@FJAdventurer I wasn't thrilled by the cost either but I figured if I didn't get the better ride offered in theory due to the thinner more flexible leaf design the entire truck was a waste given my significant neck and back issues. I apply this same philosophy to my RC crawlers! The top heavy, mostly stock, underpowered trucks are the ones that I find myself playing with the most. The joy and challenge of making an incapable vehicle climb, crawl or crash its way through seemingly simple terrain is more fun than hunting for an insane obstacle that can challenge a purpose built rig. I'd rather spend 15 minutes and 30 attempts trying to find a way to get over a small hill rather than 45 seconds easily slow crawling a "difficult" trail in an expensive purpose built rig. "The best off-roader is the one that gets the most smiles per gallon out on the trail" 😄👍🏻
