What makes and FJ40 an Fj40? 🤔

Thanks, great video showing the installation. I'll be doing mine soon or i might let a shop here in Bogota do the work. Labor and the parts are inexpensive. Keep up the good work, subscribed.

Thanks! It wasn't too daunting if you have the space, tools and time. It was the time that was hardest to come by 😂 All in all, and enjoyable project.

Looking good my friend! Fine job showing the installation process. Where in Washington are you? I’m in Vancouver. Keep on cruising. Robert

Thanks, Robert! I’m in Centralia (not too far from you). FJ40’s are the greatest hobby a guy could have, right? Fun to drive, fun to work on, and fun to look at/film - triple threat!

The old Bilstein shocks didn't have enough up travel?

That was the case in one corner. I lengthened my bump stop by 3/4”. I think I should be good to go now.

It looks like Pro Comp has discontinued those springs, any thoughts on who makes something comparable?

Maybe Old man emu? But I’d reach out to Redline Land Cruisers. They are the ones that inspired my lift components. They are still offering a 2.5” lift on their site, but they don’t call out the spring pack. redlinelandcruisers.com/shop/40-series/suspension/fj40-2-5-inch-lift/ Also, you may want to check out Cool Cruiser’s website. I get/got most of my stuff through them. They also have an Amazon store. www.coolcruisers.com/suspension.html

@@FJAdventurerThanks for the info. I had actually reached out to ARB/OME and CCOT before bugging you. OME won't ship to AK. and CCOT is out of stock with their spring kit. I had NOT tried Redline, they also are out of stock but will ship to AK. After watching your video for the 3rd time or so I noticed you have the "reverse shackle" . Any input on that? Was it a kit, does it improve the ride enough that it was worth it? etc. Thanks again !
@FJAdventurer8 ай бұрын
@@Jerry-t4u - I do have reversed shackles in the front. It was completed before I purchased the old girl, but I'm sure it wasn't a kit (its a bit of a butcher job). That said, I think the reverse shackles on front improve the ride and handling a little bit. However, because of the reversal, I have front driveshaft issues. When my springs compress with the reversal, the shackles shift the axle to the rear instead of forward. As such, I think the previous owner shortened the shaft a bit to keep if from bottoming out on the transfer case. Conversely, when the spring are extended (full droop), the shackles move the axle forward. Since my shaft has been shortened, during full spring droop, my driveshaft has come apart "twice" on the trail. With the shackles in the front (as designed), the axle will stay fairly close to center from full compression to full droop. (I drew all this up in autocad to confirm😅) As such, you don't need a lot of slip space in your front drive shaft. So, if you plan to do any off-roading, my recommendation is to keep the shackles up front where they belong to avoid other headaches.

How many degree wedge did you put on the front to correct the castor in the video? Did you do a wheel alignment afterwards, was it within spec? I’m about to add a 2” lift to my 83 BJ42 and need some advice as my vehicle sufferers from terrible bump steer and I believe it’s related to the castor angle. I am rebuilding the steering box, drag link, centre arm bracket, rag joint and all ball joints to eliminate any other problem areas. Hopefully after that the old girl should be good.
@FJAdventurer2 жыл бұрын
I used 6 degree shims up front, but 4 degrees may have been appropriate. However, my death wobble was corrected with the changes I made, but I’m not sure if it was pinion angle or better springs that corrected it. Good luck with your build!

I was carefully watching and saw the front leaf spring shackles reversed from stock position, now in rear. What do I need to look for in the steering? My 1970 FJ does not have this correction yet. Does Cool Cruisers have the hangers or do I need to fabricate my own?

Hello. I am in Vietnam I own a 1974 bj40, the car's springs have deteriorated, in Vietnam I don't have it, if you don't use it anymore can you give it to me. I say very seriously, I will be very grateful to you. thank you.

Approximately 1.573, which ain’t bad for a 40 year old short wheelbase rig on leaf springs.

Those are 15x9 80’s Chevy rally wheels that I screwed hubcaps on to 😅. They work great and are dirt cheep, but I had to bore the centers out a little to fit over the hubs.
