I am trying i3wm. I have a question. If I have two Chrome windows with multiple tabs open in Ubuntu GNOME, and I log out and switch to i3, will I be able to restore those windows and tabs in Chrome using the 'Continue where you left off' option? I opened Chrome in i3, but the Restore button doesn't work to open up the tabs/windows of Chrome. Is it possible to config somehow?

my mom walked on me while using i3 and now she thinks I'm hiding something and purposely trying to encrypt my computer. how do I explain to her that i3 is NOT a tool used for computer encryption? /srs

I know I'm 8 years late on this but at 7:00, your font is literally showing up on the screen, the font family is "SFNS Display" but it's the same one. Thanks a lot for the hard work tho, the videos are great !

coming here 2024 you might alter the workflow a bit: - you'll notice that the derfault i3wm config now uses variable name for workspaces from the get-go - use the XDG specs for config files: the i3 config file should go to ~/.config/i3/config, fonts for your local user should go to ~/.local/share/fonts/

If someone is as dumb as me and wondering why feh isn't setting the wallpaper when it is in the i3 config, but does so when run from terminal: It is exec_always with an underscore and not without. I totally overlooked that and tried to fix it for an hour or so :D

For anyone watching in 2024: instead of autoloading the monitor setup by putting in the xrandr display setup command in the i3 config file, I recommend to instead use a package called 'autorandr' which lets you save different xrandr monitor configurations (e.g. 'mobile' for just your laptop screen and 'docked' for when you have another monitor attached) and then it will automatically load/reload those configurations for you based on what monitors you have attached. It also lets you use 'hook' scripts like 'preswitch' and 'postswitch' that let you execute your own scripts before/after a device change has been detected. I personally use 'postswitch' to reload my wallpapers when I connect an external monitor. Even if you dont plan to use hooks then this is in my opinion a much better setup than what he did in the video since yoh won't have to manually do anything when you plug in a monitor.

This might be really old but in the cadre where you were saying that you can't San Francisco font does not register in the font select. right in the open font select window that you were at, there was a font called "SFNS Display". Well, that was it :) I learned that by opening the font in font viewer to know its internal name (That sometimes may differs) which was applied here. But nevertheless you've been a great help and helped me building up a great workspace, thanks :) :)

the first thing that I changed was to use the normal navigation keys of hjkl like vim. If you do this you will have to change the horizontal split key mapping. I ended up changing split h and split v to add control key. Now that I learnt and only use vim now for development, using i3wm was just a no brainer choice. For those that are sometime forced to use windows for work or school, you can get a window manager called glazewm that will mimic i3wm for windows and I have tried it out with success.

I've grown annoyed with standard desktops, and with KDE Plasma 6's recent oddities with their desktop preset customization, I've been deciding to just switch to i3. At first, I was overwhelmed by the options, and foreign (To me) ways to customize. This mini-series has helped reduce that anxiety to show it isn't really that hard, and has really nice way to manage screen-space. At the anti-cost of customization too, unlike gnome, which is personally unusable because of the very restrictive workflow.

Excellent class! I chose Pop! OS precisely because it brings native Twm. But I can't stand the resizing bugs anymore (and I'm not going to wait for Cosmic Desktop in Rust which, yes: it brings many improvements to TWM). I also share the idea of reserving work spaces for certain contexts. Something that, in Pop! OS I do organically and would love to have this option to make everything automated. I will see the next videos and try to install i3. Thanks!

On the latest version of Ubuntu (2023), the gear icon for starting i3 is no longer adjacent to the log-in - it’s on its own on the lower right hand side - stumped me for a while. Also, I understand that running Ubuntu in a VM on Windows can also fall over if you have the Windows key as mod so potentially go Alt. in a Win VM. First class video by the way, really appreciate your work.
