Got a (used) 2020 Bolt last week! But how do I stop the infernal radio from blasting every time I unplug my phone from Carplay?
@DustinBatchelor19 күн бұрын
With your phone unplugged go into the Audio player on the car and change the source to Bluetooth, then when you unplug it will try to connect and should stay quiet. Also, when your iPhone is connected, make sure the volume on your iPhone is on maximum. Car play and android auto tend to be very quiet so you have to crank the volume on the phone.
Shopping now, still considering the Volt as well. As for the Bolt, though, if I can get a 2017-2019 with low mileage, is there any strong reason to spring for the 2020?
@DustinBatchelor24 күн бұрын
The seats were a bit comfier 2019 and later, but otherwise not really. The battery should have been replaced in 2017 to 2019, and the cars are essentially identical. My 2017 Bolt is still going strong, and I do like it more than my 2011 Volt.

@DustinBatchelor24 күн бұрын
@HelloFiggy 2017 to 2019 guaranteed recall, and the other years got additional monitoring software installed to detect a battery problem. Many of the 2020+ identified the need to replace a battery, but it wasn't necessarily a guaranteed thing.

My only complaint about my 2021 bolt LT was the key fob's remote function. It can only send out the first command at distance. Then ignore all the following commands. Until I walk really close to the vehicle, like 10ft. The remote will function as how it should be. This makes it impossible to do remote start, and very difficult to find the vehicle in a parking lot. Brought to the dealer, left there for a few days, they were able to replicate the problem, but don't have any fix. They even admitted on another bolt that they have, it had the same issue. Not sure if anyone here has the same problem and how to fix it. Thank you.

Did you install the trailer hitch on the Bolt? If so, can you do a video on the wiring install? Where di you get the +12 Volts from? I see some tap into the battery positive, but I would prefer a switched B+ source. Thanks.

Very good video for a second hand buyer. I personally like the Mach e but absolutely hate the TV hanging in the middle of the dash. It's kind of a deal breaker for me. I think Tesla started it and more and more are copying them. WHY a 100+ year old company like Ford want to look like a 10 year old company??? I'm forced to look elsewhere for my next ev
@DustinBatchelorАй бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to comment! All I can say is you should try it before making final judgement. There are still many other manual controls and the important information is on the display behind the steering wheel. I'm on my second Mach E after the first one was written off in a crash, and the car protected me very well. It's a blast to drive, and is actually very well thought out. With all that said, there are lots of great EVs out there :)

@vg8022 yeah there's lots of improvements on the 2025, the main one being the addition of a heat pump. A few years ago I wasn't considering the Mach E, and instead had a reservation for the Kia EV6. Ended up giving the Mach E a look and actually liked everything it did. Looking at the EV6 now I'm sure I'd still enjoy it, but I like the Mach E more. I recently did a 5900km trip through several US States and my Mach E was amazing.

Hey Dustin, Sorry about the trolls (assholes), I also decided the Lectron was the better adapter and had a massive (for me 2700km) road trip coming up. Had issues along the way cause I got the Lectron that would not let go of the NACS connector. Anyway, long story short, used princess auto welding vice grips a few times and the Lectron loosened up enough to use. So then got the A2Z typhoon pro and have not tried it yet but will on the next trip. Also you mentioned waiting for the free adaptor from Ford. I registered on Feb 29, 2023 (first day you could register) and finally got a Xmas present delivered Dec 21, 2024. So the question now was would I get the Tesla made unit or the Ford Lectron unit. I got the Tesla one,, oh well was hoping Ford due to the improved design, one button etc and Elon makes me cringe. Anyways, I drive a 2023 Mache CR1 and also live in BC (up north). Thanks for the Videos

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it. I received my Ford one and am planning on doing a quick comparison of the three. Honestly the A2Z worked perfectly for me and I'd have no problem suggesting to just use that one. 2700km is still quite the journey and it makes a huge difference to be able to use the Tesla chargers when needed. Happy driving!

I gather that quite a few EV owners are unaware that with the right adjustable EVSE, it is indeed possible to obtain 16 amps using a 120-volt NEMA 5-20 outlet, thereby providing an increase of at least 25% more compared with a 120-volt NEMA 5-15 outlet. All-in-all, this EVDance EVSE is a very affordable, good quality, versatile charger that would come in handy when travelling, etc. Just don't expect this EVSE to be either UL, ETL or CSA certified at this price point, even though most other brands also aren't certified! If you can afford it, try to choose at least an ETL certified, or more, EVSE such as the Grizzl-e Mini that will safety charge your EV and last you several years.

Because the Bolt is quiet he says . . . My 2021 Bolt is the noisiest car I’ve owned and that is at all speeds, not just high speeds, all speeds. It’s so noisy that I check that my windows are closed frequently. Sure, the motor etc. is quiet, but the outside noise coming into the cabin is horrible.
@DustinBatchelor3 ай бұрын
I suppose you've owned much quieter cars than I have. Everything is relative, but I will stand by that the Bolt is significantly quieter than let's say a Honda Civic. Have you looked to see if there maybe is actually something wrong with your Bolt? I've run decibel meters in several vehicles and the Bolt does great!

@@DustinBatchelor I took it in yesterday for the most recent recall and they looked into everything I noticed, and ran a diagnostic test. I reported rattles throughout the car and those were coming from the garage door opener. It was rattling against some plastic. I have some loss of hearing and was unable to ascertain where the rattle was coming from. It was a relief that it was a very easy fix. They were telling me that the outside noise is so noticeable because of not having the standard car engine noises. I’ve had the car a week, so I do need to get used to the car and all its nuances.

@DustinBatchelor3 ай бұрын
It really depends on how good your lease term is. Our lease options in Canada are usually pretty terrible so it's typically better to buy. A big advantage to leasing an EV is you get a chance to upgrade to newer models in the future. I'm currently on a large USA road trip in my Mach E (driven 3500 miles so far) and the car is flawless. Sure it would be great to have a bit faster charging and more range, but the car is wildly capable as it is and such a blast to drive. Anyways, best of luck with your decision!
@Godfather98143 ай бұрын
@@DustinBatchelor yeah I’m in the US and was thinking of getting a new car once my current car a 2016 Chevy Malibu is paid off in a few months to go back to being a ford driver! And I’m liking the idea ford will pay for the charging unit for the house with free standard installation and I agree leasing an EV would probably be smarter so mechanical issues won’t cost me much and like you said since I’m sure new models and tech will be added in the future so getting a new one every few years would be nice!

Good day to you, we have the same exact 2021, same color, and yes, the 4X also! Bought in 2021, demo, had 2100 miles, as I am the primary driver. It now, 3 years later, only has 16,000 miles, so, obviously, I do not drive a lot. The ONLY issue I would “complain “ about is the RECALLS! It has been in for the windshield/ panoramic seals and now, it is CURRENTLY at the dealer for software issues. ABS was alarming, the “one petal drive” stopped working, in which they are all alarming together. Ford apparently has no real fix to some of the software issues, so that part is really upsetting. Dealer has had ours for almost a month! If anyone else has experienced this, feel free to add a comment, thanks for the video and sharing everything! DO LOVE my car though, miss it right now! 😢

Thank you for sharing this information. I’ve just started seriously considering buying this EV. I’m in an area of USA where EVs are very unpopular so when I saw the 21 model year sitting on the lot with 25,000 miles for $27,000 I was intrigued. There are quite a few new ones on the lot and they are discounted on average of $6000 with the lowest priced one at $41,000 minus the tax credit of $7000. Unfortunately I don’t know how that compares yet to the 2021 . I have heard say that even used EVs qualify for a $3500 tax credit but didn’t confirm that. Overall though if everything checks out according to your video and they can get the price down to $20,000 I’m a buyer. I’ve found over the years that when I want a car and set the price I’m willing to pay that a negotiation over a week or two with the dealer is normal. I buy these unpopular cars and have always enjoyed them. My first EV I hope.

Helpful review... Just to be clear, IP66 means " IP66 rated enclosure provides protection against high pressure (12.5mm) water jets. The test includes the enclosure being subjected to 100 litres per minute of water volume with the pressure of 100 kPa at a distance of 3m for at least 3 minutes. Protected from total dust ingress." .... 'It's important to note that although an IP66 enclosure is waterproof against hose-directed water and falling drops of rain or snow, it's not intended to be submerged in water.' So this should withstand outdoor wet conditions.

It is indeed possible to charge your EV with a level 1 charger running at 16 amps using a NEMA 5-20 outlet. You'll get a maximum charge rate of 1.92 kw/hr rather than 1.44 kw/hr, which is at least 25% faster.
@dubmob1512 ай бұрын
How would it know it's not a 5-15 outlet?
@dubmob1512 ай бұрын
In the video it only showed up to 12A with the 120V input, maybe it allows 16A only with a 240V supply
@marclemieux82692 ай бұрын
@dubmob151 A NEMA 5-20 outlet has an additional horizontal notch on one side to distinguish it from a far more common NEMA 5-15 outlet. You must also make sure that this 5-20 outlet is fully dedicated due to the larger power output, that its wiring is at least 12 gauge, and finally that the breaker located in the main electrical panel is 20 amps rather than 15 amps. If you have all of the above-mentioned, then you're all set to begin charging your EV at a slightly faster rate of at least 25% more than with a regular NEMA 5-15 outlet! And should you require even more power, you can then easily convert the NEMA 5-20 into a NEMA 6-20 outlet by replacing both the outlet and the breaker with a NEMA 6-20 and a 240-volt type respectively. You would then be able to charge your EV at up to 15 mph or 24 kph. Not bad at all!
@dubmob1512 ай бұрын
@marclemieux8269 how would the EVSE unit know that you've got it plugged into a 5-20R instead of a 5-15R? All it can see is the 120V, which is the same on either one. If it is plugged into a 240V outlet, then it may allow the additional current selection.
@marclemieux82692 ай бұрын
@dubmob151 You must have an adjustable EVSE in order to increase your amps to 16, rather than 12, at 120 volts. However, some EVs, like the Chevy Bolt, will not allow you to charge higher than 12 amps at 120 volts. Most other EVs will allow you to do so.

Technically there is only a small difference between select awd and extended awd in acceleration (4.8s vs 5.1s 0-60mph). The front motor gets power limited by the battery current, but the motors are the same between extended/premium and select awd.

When you started talking about the trailer, I was briefly regretting purchasing a utility trailer, which I bought mainly for camping. Then I looked up the price, and am suddenly super happy with my utility trailer purchase. 😆 In addition to costing about 90% less, it weighs only 400 labs. I decided that I wouldn't tow more than 1000 lbs with this car, so that still leaves me with 600 lbs for cargo. It can also do things like carry bicycles without buying additional parts, and haul things like plywood. I'm curious to see how your efficiency test came out compared to mine. I got about 25-30% less distance towing about 800 pounds (including bikes standing up, so not great aerodynamics), but I compared to similar speed (around 90 on average). If I compared to going 110, the difference would have been more like 15%. (my estimates are pretty rough, because I am comparing typical averages with no trailer to one specific trip with the trailer)

I saw the same model and the year that has like 9k miles, would that be a good buy? for electrical cars if the miles are super low for a 3 years old one, is that considered worse off in the near future compare to a similarly aged car that had decent used miles on it?
@DustinBatchelor6 ай бұрын
It's still important to get as low mileage as you can as there are still lots of components that wear with usage such as suspension, interior and exterior finishing, tires, brakes, etc. The only concern I might have is that someone left the car in a low charge state for a long period of time which could be damaging to the battery, but it's pretty unlikely. More likely that someone bought it and just didn't drive much. I'd say go for it!
