I purchased a GameCube the week that it was released. I like it well enough but Nintendo did everything wrong during the GameCube era. Letting Microsoft buy Rare even though Rare carried the N64. Luigi's Mansion is a solid game but a terrible launch title. It's not a system seller type of game. The mini discs were a mistake. Super Mario Sunshine was a rushed and broken mess that failed to live up the the innovative Mario 64. It's decent but nothing more. No matter how much anyone loves Wind Waker, it was the wrong game for that time. People wanted a game based on that Space World demo. Nintendo did everything wrong during the GameCube era and that's why it sold 10 million less than the N64 and was outsold by newcomer Microsoft's XBOX. It was an embarrassing time for Nintendo. Only the Wii U was a more embarrassing time. The Virtual Boy was not their mainline console so it flopping wasn't that big of a deal. I really hope that Nintendo has finally learned their lesson after the enormous success of The Switch. Be creative and the quirky Nintendo that we know and love but also sometimes you just have to give the people what they want alongside giving them what they didn't know they wanted. Continue to be balanced.

gamecube had defintely 10/10 first party games, but it lacked so much things compared to ps2 and xbox after my opinion. u didnt pick gamecube if u were into online-mulitplayer games or wide liberaly 3 party games, u rather picked xbox or ps2 if u were into sport games, car games, fps games, role playing games , rpg etc. even xbox and ps2 had so many 720p and 1080 i games. when i got a HD tv back in 2006, first thing i did was to put my ps2 with gran turismo 4, went to settings, and took the graphics to 1080 HD. i was fk blown away. im still sad to this day that we gamecube owners didnt get any tennis game like Top spin

PS2 had zero 720P games. Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy were only 2 -games that supported 960i on NTSC. PAL -versions of those were only cropped 480i window on 576i TVs. At least most NGC -games were 480P on NTSC, unlike most PS2 -games.

But then if they went with the DVD player, the cost of the system would have been more for the licence. Furthermore Nintendo has a rule that it ALWAYS makes money on hardware. So it likely would have ended up costing more the PS2 if they went that route. No offence but this video is really showing you need to more research about what you’re talking about…
@Kurriochi14 сағат бұрын
I actually did quite a bit of research into the DVD licensing scheme. Here's what I found out: The remote for the og Xbox was where MS "hid" the license costs. You couldn't play DVD videos without the remote... and the remote seemed to cost 20$ or so. Going onto the main site of the DVD6C licensing group, the license had these things in it: DVD video player and ROM drive: 4% of net selling price (minimum 4$) DVD ROM disc: 7.5$ per disc. So, in total, if the gamecube was like, 240$ retail BEFORE licensing costs are introduced, they'd still make a profit considering the additions don't add an extra 40$ in terms of parts. Then add the 10$ licensing cost and kaboom: 250$ Gamecube. The 250$ price tag was just a rough estimate, btw. The price could probably be lower considering the bulk prices Nintendo could get on the SDRAM chips and also the fact they wouldn't need to reinvent the wheel with Panasonic, though I'd imagine Panasonic would still be providing them with, this time, full sized, DVD drives. source for the DVD drive licensing info: www.dvd6cla.com/news/001.html

I don't think a system that came in last in sales behind its only competitors can be considered "overrated". On the contrary, most now consider the GCN home to many hidden gems and outright stellar first party titles. I suppose this new counter culture surrounding the system is what you're referring to, but that culture has been earned in all the subsequent years following its release

Nintendo gamecube needed 32-MB main ram and a DVD based off DVD ram cart 2.0 disc or dual layer mini dvd. Gamecube did better with 3rd party support that was lost during the n64 era. However they lost rare as there 2nd party developers and never release more 1st party games for teens and adults. Also, one more Mario and proper zelda game during its middle lifespand.

System had enough RAM. That's why first -party games don't have any loading times & NGC -version of Resident Evil 4 has better sound effects than PS2 -version, for example. But yeah, converting from PS2 & XBOX would had been easier if NGC would had been more similar tech as those.

It's mostly a joke that all mario parties are basically interchangeable (they sort of are, at least on the gamecube - you can have fun with any of them), but also that reviewers did complain they were kinda "the same". Also both ToS and SoAL are really good games so I'm going to pretend it was intentional :b

The N64 analogue stick definitely wasn't shit, though it definitely had issues with durability. It was actually extremely precise, which is something I remember from when I had a new system. Professional speedrunners usually prefer N64 controllers with original OEM control sticks, or at least a good quality third party re-production which uses the same type of control stick mechanism. Modern control sticks are inherently more reliable but also less precise, and this is the same type that was used for the Playstation Dual shock sticks. Believe it or not, it used a design which used optical sensors and, as long as it remained in good condition, was actually MORE precise than even modern high quality analogue sticks that you find in expensive modern controllers. The biggest problem with the N64's analogue stick design was that it wasn't especially durable, so the quality and precision of the stick would degrade gradually over time, but it was likely to work fairly well for a good two years or more before it started to get really bad, though that would depend on the games you played, and you could get it to last longer if you lubricated it with a lubricant that was safe for plastic. The analogue stick of an OEM N64 controller can be replaced fairly easily, and you can buy third party replacement parts for it to this day. I bought some myself from Kitchbent, and I think the parts were about 6 or 9 US dollars each for a set of replacement parts, but you'd probably want to buy at least a few sets to make it worth paying the cost of shipping. You can also replace it with the less precise but more durable type of analogue stick, but these just always seem too sensitive for some games, and are less than ideal. There are more durable reproductions of the OEM components which use metal parts, but production and availability has not been consistent, and nobody has been able to manufacture enough good quality ones to satisfy demand, and they are generally extremely hard to find and extremely expensive, and there have been quality control issues with some of them as well.

As much as I loved my N64 it has maybe a few dozen really great must-play games. The PSX has several hundred. Not only that but the larger storage space allowed for more modern game mechanics like multiple save profiles, FMVs, CD quality music, multi-disc games, and much more unique content. Not to mention TEXTURES. MGS1 and Gran Turismo wouldn't be possible on the N64 without really butchering the textures. To go even further the N64 has about half a dozen RPGs most of which kinda suck while the PSX is a JRPG paradise and is where some of the most cherished franchises started or found their stride. I play games from both consoles but the PSX has way more exclusive stuff that keeps me coming back. Luckily both consoles are a joy to emulate these days!

For me N64 and Dreamcast are 5.5 gen. Nintendo 64 is the equivalent of Voodoo 1 and Dreamcast of Voodoo 2. While PS2 and GC are the equivalent of Geforce 3, and Xbox of Geforce 4 (in that case litteraly a Geforce 4). 3DO, Saturn and PS1 are more like software rendering on PC, even if they have 3D graphic chips to achieve this.

N64 beats PS1 every day. Are you blind ? It was not a thing back then. 32 bit gen graphics are hideous, N64 was the first 3D console with a clean rendering. I had both consoles and I never heard or read anywhere at the time that the PS1 beats the N64 graphically. N64 is almost a new gen compare to PS1 or Saturn. If the PS1 won this generation it's because it was easier to program than the Saturn and it came out 1 to 2 years before the N64. But mostly it's thanks to Sony's huge advertising campaign, and deals with third party publishers. And also thanks to Nintendo's mistake of not opting for the CD, which also scared away third party publishers who earn more money on a CD game than on a cartridge game (like the dematerialized against the physical today). The playtstation was technically far behind the N64. The Nintendo 64 is like Voodoo 1 on PC, and the Dreamcast like Voodoo 2.
@Kurriochi9 күн бұрын
Did you know the N64 was still running as a 32 bit system most of the time? The 64 bit instructions were never used in the actual games, as you'd need to spend twice as long moving pointers around in the N64's already painfully slow memory. All 3 of them were 32 bit systems. The 4300i in the N64 was basically just a 32 bit CPU "enhanced" to support some 64 bit features, but using those features made it too slow to run games properly. The Gamecube and Xbox were 32 bit consoles, so was the Dreamcast and PS2 (though they did have some SIMD and stuff, but that's SIMD for you). Bit width doesn't have much to do with processing power, but if you're curious, the first "true" 64 bit consoles were the X360 and PS3... and it took nintendo until the Switch to join the 64 bit party.
@SeijuroHiko-vx3lw9 күн бұрын
@@Kurriochi I say 32 bit to differenciate N64 to PS1 and Saturn, But i knew 64 bit is not what makes N64 power. And you, do you know N64 and N64 games ? Did you had a PS1 and a N64 back then ? Do you know 3d card pc gaming of this era ? Playstatrion games were absolutely not the most beautiful games of this era. PS1 was good during 95, 96. But from 97 was overtaken by PC and N64, and then by Dreamcast. PS1 simply can't do what N64 does. Look at all Turok games, F1 World Grand Prix, Wave Race 64, etc... Playstation can't do what you can see in those games. Gran Turismo is the most beautiful game of the PS1, not the norm. It can't be better. People looks at the worse N64 games to decide PS1 is better (in contradiction with all technical characteristics), forgetting majority of PS1 games are very ugly. Playstation fanboys are delusional. They think each PS was the best machine of its era. But it was rarely the case. Only with PS4 before Xbox One X, and currently with PS5 Pro. But that's it. In all the games you show, N64 was systematqly better graphicallly. It's nonsense to say the opposite. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6mUXqSljqmYbtk

PS1 has a better library but N64 has some of the best games of this generation in several genres : 3D platformers, action/adventure, futuristic racers, arcade racers, first-person shooters, some sports... Regarding graphics, many say that PS1 is better just because of higher resolution textures, but 3D graphics are much more than that: N64 is similar in polygon count (or even better in certain conditions, custom microcodes...) and uses these polygons more efficiently, it is better on large environments, can do more complex lighting with more light sources, better effects, more stable 3D, etc., even for textures it's not necessarily that bad because there are several techniques that allow to reach textures equivalent to 64x64 or even higher (64x64 is healthy for 240p games) and a good texture work also matters a lot (for example on PS1 Vagrant Story has less detailed / more pixelated textures than Chrono Cross but a very good texture work)

Half of the games i listed here are often regarded as the best games of all time. I don’t even have to watch the video to know that you are completely wrong. Why would an american company use the japanese - and also too fresh for the time - Hitachi CPU? The Motorola 68EC030 was the ideal for this context! Proper 32-bit processing (slighty better than the 020 with 32-bit MMU), recognizable ISA (even for japanese devs who already had experience with the Mega-Drive or the budget PCs of the late 80's)! The "35mhz clock speed" statement is limited by the manufacturers options.

While i kind of get where you're coming from with your comment about DC being 5th gen, i completely disagree. 5th gen couldn't dream of running the likes of doa2, soul calibur, sonic Adventure, shenmue, and so much more. The only reason i could see you saying that it cause DC got alot of 5th gen ports (a lot of them "lazy"), but so did ps2 till late in 2001. Granted those ports usually actually took advantage of the hardware graphically, but that has to do more with ps2 having the financial support of 3rd parties coming from the huge success of ps1

The 5th Generation had solid 3D capabilities and 2D Games like Symphony of the Night are more beatuiful than and 16 Bit Game can ever be but they were rare bc they were considered outdated in the up and coming 3D era. The 6th Generation is so well loved bc the Concept of 3D Games was somehow established and computiational capablities allowed something that may be considered „modern“ by todays Standards. Interesting, but controversial take. In late 90s I got a modchipped PS1 and it was a blessing, especially when I could download a game from torrent in 2000s and burn the cd. My classmate had N64 which was adored by him and still played games at that time, in 2000s. EDIT: I even remember friends getting PSP mainly because it was easily sofmoddable and would emulate PS1 (and GBA) games. Never met anyone with Sega console, but I wouldn't say it was neglected that much, you still heard about the titles or read about them - you def would stumble on some games and played them on emulator in early 2000s. I would say gen5 was the budget gaming of 2000s and never been neglected. Even in mid-2010s I saw people on Twitch doing playthroughs (although gen3-4 were the speedrunning hype then) The issue is most gen-z either remember those gen3 mario speedruns assuming this is retro gaming and just skipped to gen6-7 era as it had the furthest they remembered (GTA, FF, God of War, Hitman)
