Great vid. In terms of load carrying capacity do you think the Calypso 16 or hobie 16 is better?
@402180027 күн бұрын
Luke both are very different boats. The Calypso allows you to store limited gear in hulls where as the H16 requires tied down bags to centre of tramp. As the Calypsos get older more concerns are held to having beams and hulls in sound condition and then equaling weight between both hulls. The Calypso can certainly carry more weight but a Hobie 16 will out sail with speed and does better in swell given the height clearance above water line. I love being able to choose where I pack weight on the H16 too i.e if I’m sailing down wind I’ll move weight further back or to one side based on wind direction for long distances with limited tacks/gybes.

@ thanks Matt really appreciate the info. Trying to find a good cat for son and I to do some camp cruising on. Combined crew weight about 150kg and then enough capacity for camping supplies as well. Realise a H18 might be better but want a boat I can right if it goes turtle so thinking 16ft max might be better. Sounds like a H16 could be a good option
@402180024 күн бұрын
@@lukec7838 The Hobie 18 is a beautiful boat but another beach cat that is slowly aging and if its not up to scratch rigging/tramps/sails are crazy expensive now. The H18 does take alot more weight but i've always loved the challenge of being a minimalist and using similar gear to hiking to save on weight. I weighted 95kg ish when i owned my H18 and I could right it solo using a righting pole but if my son was with me he would just climb onto my harness and we'd right it together no problems.

From memory the F82R’s PHRF is .850 . My Corsair Pulse is .800 . Looks like your 51 is North American? Here in Australia PHRF is used for mixed multihull fleet racing and will change based on your past performances. It’s also measured based on sail measurements

werekorden here on the East Coast of Brisbane, Australia we get Westerly winds during our Winter (June/July/August) Westerly winds are extremely inconsistent and packed with very high wind gusts which make sailing only for the faint hearted. The westerly gusts are typically double that seem during the rest of the year. Example: Forcast is for 15-20kts with Westerly gusts 25-30kts.
