You mention adapting this. If someone is not going to use this for 5e but mine it, they may find getting the actual Symbaroum books and mining them an easier route. Or just play it with the native Symbaroum rules rather than the 5e flavoured version.

I would use the 5E version of Ptolus as a guide to adapt it to Cypher System. As for worldbuilding I think works better when not much of your homebrew has been already revealed to the characters. So it's easier to bring new aspects without contradictions or having to roll-back previous revelations.

Symbaroum was initially published with it's own rules (a roll under d20 system, no levels, magic corrupts, combat is deadly, fairly rules lite compared to 5e). The 5e flavoured books try and adapt the setting to that system. So if you don't dig 5e there is always that option. Been playing it for a few years. The setting is fantastic, but I don't know how they can make 5e work with it, they must change the 5e magic system because the corruption of magic is a major thing in the setting.

Starter kit is on the way! But I think they made a poor approach with marketing, since the Zweihänder Revised Rulebook is out since 2017 I think, and this starter box is still based on those rules, as far as I know. That said, the developers wanted to make something new which you can see in the layout and art of the starter kit, which is different from the Zweihänder Revised book, and they just finished a Kickstarter for Zweihänder Reforged which will come in early 2025. Thanks Paco and Tycho. <3 Funny how making people roll a d20 (so 5% increments) lulls them into associating Dragonbane with D&D rather than adapted Runequest roll low mechanics with a few excellent modern and Forbidden Lands additions. Maybe it's the Dragon too!? Either way it's a cool game. Well worth the time to learn the mechanics and GM some grotty sewer tunnels, perilous dungeons and borderland keeps! The box set is awesome. I've a feeling from what you've showed of the hardback it might be useful for prolonged use, being less prone to fall apart. Although, I would have liked to see some concise summaries of starter text and more extra content. It comes across as a little underwhelming, like it was an afterthought-and a bit of a no-brainer when people were eager to throw money and requests. And, I guess, it'll sit well against the bestiary.

As a trans person myself, I’d say it depends what we mean by “incorporating gender identity into our games” Maybe gender as a whole isn’t important in your game, and as such it’s not a part of the codified system. Then if a player of atypical gender identity is playing it’s included by the mere fact that they are playing. As long as the GM isn’t an ass about not including people for that fact alone. But if your game has a gender based system like being male does something mechanically, and you’re not acknowledging those players who you know will pick up the game, I believe you’re doing those players a disservice Idk all of what Ernie Gygax said. I assume he said some stuff like people like me aren’t welcome in the gaming sphere or similar. Which isn’t a great image to say the least. My point is I wouldn’t say a game simply not acknowledging gender is necessarily wrong unless they’re explicitly excluding or showing animosity towards these players. People aren’t obligated to cater to certain needs or desires, just don’t be a dick about it. That’s how I feel, being one of the people in question.
@GMSMagazine
@GMSMagazine 2 ай бұрын
The issue is that the game does contain a fair bit of homophobic, sexist and transphobic things. For example (and this is a tired but very handy one), the belt that changes sexes from male to female is considered to be a curse. A lot of things resonate with racist and sexist tropes. An the issue is not just that, but the fact that, when those have been ironed out, there has been a huge backlash from people. To me, people who don't want to have Trans NPCs in books because they "want to leave identity politics out of the game"... there is a problem there.
@kaylaa2204
@kaylaa2204 2 ай бұрын
@@GMSMagazine yeah there’s some dated things in the old editions, but I think they’re easy to look past and still play fun game. Though I would say that depending on the person, the belt could be considered a curse. I mean dysphoria is literally being distressed by your sex feeling wrong, so I imagine a cis person having it literally reversed would evoke similarly extreme emotions. And that wouldn’t be wrong for them to feel obviously. I don’t like the belt because it seems to do very little to actually penalize the player, coming off more as either a roleplay thing or a joke. It’s not my favorite item. I’d also imagine that there would be people specifically seeking out these items. That’s just an issue of the term curse is that what is considered a curse is relative to the person and how they intend to use it. The rest, yeah I have seen some questionable things in old school D&D. Abit more in AD&D that I noticed. But I look past them because the game itself is very fun, and it’s refreshing compared to modern games I’ve thought to include queer NPCs but I’ve never actually found a good opportunity. If I did I might actually use that belt or a similar magic to just go “yeah they can just do that, free, perfect, instantaneous transition”

In RPGs I imagine myself a warrior, other a cleric others some kind of mage, sometimes I go human and sometimes go for other races. I sometimes play males and sometimes females just because I can. And what we search for in our group is people to laugh with, and we don't care about sexuality because that's not what the meeting or the game is about. Most of us are into computer programming, so we tend to nerd out about the same things. it's a inclusive game, if you don't want that, it speaks about you and not about the game.

Hi, you're indeed correct about the cover having Moorcock'ish vibe, as far as I know that particular picture was meant to be Egerkrans' interpretation of Elric facing a dragon. That come from the fact that the original Drakar och Demoner from 1982 was an hack of Runequest/Stormbringer and the 1991 edition even had Elric on the front cover (see here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakar_och_Demoner). I'm very biased toward Dragonbane, but I think my boss described it perfectly saying that it is the right middle ground between OSR and D&D5e, a really simple old school game with just enough modern twists to work. Also, I pretty convinced that it is set in the same world of Forbidden Lands (or rather the other way around), since there are a number of common elements.
@GMSMagazine
@GMSMagazine 2 ай бұрын
I'm with you about the mix of 5E and OSR. I felt the game gives you plenty of freedom to do anything and be very cinematic whilst providing with some very cool modern takes rules-wise. I think I could easily migrate to this system and leave most of 5E rules behind.

I have never understood why this is a thing for EITHER side. As a DM I don't make my NPCs representative of the LGBT+ community because Im not LGBT+, sure I have some players that are and they can head canon all they want but it has absolutely nothing to do with the game. So I dont get why people push so hard for it or why people push so hard against it. I dont care what others do at their table when it comes to gays, just like i dont care what they do when it comes to homebrew rules or adventures. Its irrelevant to me.

This is cultural marxism. Queer activism is a political viewpoint by its own definition. They try to infiltrate cultural spaces to take them over. It has no respect for or interest in the space (or the people already in it). They’re sole concern is seizing the means of cultural production to normalize their beliefs and shame others who are uncomfortable with their ideas. *Inclusivity and tolerance* is code for *Co-opt and colonize*. It’s not actually about sharing the space with other people. It’s about taking it over and pushing out the people who were already there or forcing them to conform to their way of thinking (which is hardly tolerant or inclusive). This guy proves these points at every point in the video. He comes out the gate insulting everyone including Gary Gygax one of the creators of D&D and literally tells people that they should just leave if they don’t want the LGBTQ+ degeneracy in their hobby. If it was just about sharing the space; then these people wouldn’t be demanding everyone include their depravity in their home games. Instead they say you must have it or you can leave. This is one step away from an *or else* threat.

@@BBJones93 I've read and only partially understand what you're saying. The content you're talking about was about pride month, and you made a comment casting shade on the channel for not having enough viewers (hence, in your opinion, calling it 'dead'). This would seem to assume the channel to be primarily a commercial enterprise, thus requiring it to be constantly accruing immediate viewer units to remain viable. Not everything or everyone has to be selling themselves in the market every moment to be valid or alive. There's new content on this channel by a living human weekly, no matter who does or doesn't watch. I enjoy seeing that Paco, his friends, his dog and his husband are okay. And there's some interesting gaming content, which is live enough for me. Nowhere in your comment were you particularly supportive of pride month or LGBTQIA+ people in general. It's not hard to see how the (what came across as quite belligerent) negativity that you expressed could easily be interpreted by Paco - an active campaigner for gay visibility and rights - as a negative attitude towards gay people and the pro LGBTQIA+ message expressed in his content. Doesn't seem a surprising conclusion you might not like homosexuals or people of minority gender identities. You may not be homophobic. I don't know you. If you're not, then it seems from what you said to me earlier that you're quite upset by girls of school age, but I'm guessing that was more likely another disparaging dig. If you habitually speak offensively when you're offended, that might be why people come to negative conclusions. It might be worth a moments thought, at least? Our society can be quite supportive of everyone's freedom of self-expression and personal choice, when it's working well. There are also times it is not supportive at all. Hence June being gender and sexuality pride month and July being disability pride month, etc… The world can still be violent and even deadly for people of a minority sexuality or gender identity - actually, it can also be the same for women and schoolgirls. When the stakes have been (and can still remain) so much higher for distained minorities such as gay men, I'm quite fine with Paco feeling the need to defend himself. Or to state his case for being allowed to exist visibly and be proud of who he loves. I really wish he didn't have to.
@BBJones93
@BBJones93 2 ай бұрын
@@Wraithing I'll speak very plainly then. Paco's last video was to laugh and disparage people who disagreed with what they feel Wizards is doing to DnD. Sure they were just as bad, which i also pointed out. However, he should know better but instead was twisting the knife, instead of trying to find common ground. I also said, as you did earlier to me in this comment, to enjoy pride and produce some positive content. So yes, i was being belligerent. The reason for that was he is causing more friction which riles people up, creating more animosity, putting US, gay people in danger - he has deleted/hidden 13+ comments from that video (evidence of him evoking hate towards gays). Instead of mending bridges, he is relishing the fire. My point about why he was doing that is because his channel gets no views unless he creates clickbait videos , such as the last one, which will draw in passing views. However most of his content is dead. I hope that clears this up, as it is my final say on the topic.

Love you Paco. ♥️ Love your content and you being you! Always great to hear what you say. Seeing so much diversity in gaming is wonderful. It's amazing this hobby survived long enough and got enough exposure for the colourful and 'popular kids' to want to try it, as well as all the grandmas, spa-weekend set and supermarket 'normals.' I tend to think, however, this only happened due to money and a particular financial success moving a broader cultural change. There was definitely a strong intersection between nerdy computer programmers and tabletop gamers, and when those (occasionally social-illiterate) professionals started making lots of money and bestowing large amounts of that cash on the kind of entertainments they enjoyed, it's amazing (but not really unexpected) how attractive they suddenly became. Now it seems, all the lads that were busy at school trying to find my comics-mad friend so they could flush his head (or worse still, his comics!) down the loo at lunchtime - turns out they were 'always' big Marvel and DC superhero fans… yeah, right! It's the weirdest thing now. Back when there was supposed to be all the exclusion, I didn't see it being a particularly pronounced characteristic among roleplayers. Although (at the time), exclusion "from" most other popular forms of social interaction did help a lot of gamers cling together within a subculture that (as subcultures do) had its own in-jokes and jargon - though not quite so tricky to decipher (for clear and sensible self-preservation reasons) as polari and many LGBTQ+ subcultures. Lots of us nerdy fans - of games, fantasy and speculative and superhero fiction, along with various (often derided) music genres - couldn't, didn't want to, daren't, or wouldn't ever be asked to dance at a school or college disco!! It's a generalisation. I'm sure there were a few ballet bun-heads playing D&D, but probably not many. It did tend to be a lot of socially awkward, most frequently white, English speaking (because that was the language in which the bulk of the books-just as frequently-were written), males who had a reasonably high capacity for numeracy and literacy (because: lots of words, technical manuals, tables and math-rocks). Many of those males weren't much good at deodorants and felt a low need or regard for personal grooming. I would argue though, they did feel things and wanted to find love and affection. Again, strong generalisations here… …but I do feel it was backed up by personal experience of sometimes wishing I'd taken an air freshener to a few gaming meetings in the late 80s. And I'm sure a lot of gay guys found many introverted gamers just as big a turn-off as some of the mainstream pop-listening, sports-playing girls did. That's until the good salaries, nice cars and personal hygiene kicked in, at least. Then the special effects in movies became better, because the nerdy filmmakers and newly monied audience could pay for it, and budgets inflated for the previously nerdy genres. Mainstream culture began to embrace the world that had been a safe space for some once quite excluded people. The rich ones did really well with gated mansions or even private islands, but lots weren't well-off and still don't care about gymn-sculpted abs, good haircuts and fashionable clothes - unless it's on their player character. It's easy to see why they might feel squeezed within the only space some ever felt comfortable… even though far too many behave like dicks. And (occasionally) some adopt violently nasty political values that can never be condoned or supported - just treated like any destructive addiction. Identity is a massive divider now. It might be the biggest. Politically, there's loads of money going into the maintenance of the division of us: the 99% - the ultimate in distraction - so that abhorrent and insupportable wealth inequality can be perpetuated. It's the same 'divide and rule' politics implemented throughout all the colonial and imperial systems in history. Shame it's so easily achievable, even among people who spend hours of their spare time worldbuilding!!

You make very good points. I think you are right that money and success brought a lot of people to hink twice about the nerds and that helped a lot make games (mostly videogames) mainstream a while ago. Now though, I think it is more a matter of identity. I know of a lot of people who laughed at me because I loved Dragon Ball when it first came out and now, years later when Anime has been popular after demonstrating it is quality art, they are big fans. I have known people who have looked down on the fantasy genre until they saw Game of Thrones and people who have never read Tolkien becoming "experts" after watching the movies... I think we are thirsty to belong to a group where we can feel safe, just like we were when we played D&D back when, and geekdom is becoming the home for those groups.

@@GMSMagazine It's probably why the friends of the billionaire class are so dead-set on stopping the teaching of identity intersectionality. Facilitating understanding about the complexity of the average human, navigating several identities all at once, might demystify loathing (of self and others) and bring about a bit more empathy. Harder to play people off each other politically though (or advertise aspirational 'fk-you' products), when people actually get along with, understand and like each other! One of my sadnesses lately is the, what I'm beginning to see more as, gentrification of our fictive roots and spaces. So much practical grounding, personality and fun is being removed from products, or made bland because of the creatively dead, gentrified porridge left after reinvention. Just like the gentrification of a city district often kicks out all the people (cafés, sounds, smells, arts and community cohesion) who made the area seem vibrant and desirable enough to move into. It becomes flavourless to the new colonists too, who'll become confused and bored by their, now, bloodless, zombie place. The other day, I was looking at that (supposedly problematic) AD&D Queen of the Spiders cover and thinking how much 'Tina Turner' Lolth looked like she was killing Ru Paul's Drag Race! Rather than censoring her out of existence, I'd have loved to have seen her as a grown Sally Bowles style mother of her jackbooted Drow boys in that seedy Weimar grand guignol - creating an unholy conjoining of Isherwood and Fosse, with Widows (the Mafia wives novel) and Peaky Blinders. So much delicious evil without having to turn everything into a fairytale spider where the villains just are (because we said so). Slavery can't be mentioned for fear of offense to dead generations - but the modern slave markets properly reopened in North Africa with the assassination of Gaddafi. Even so, no Dark Sun. Rather than creating an even better realised and deeper well of fiction from which GMs can draw. Better to avoid ideas that might help us to understand ourselves better - and which are flippin' awesome to be in the middle of, like a boisterous, ebullient, irreverent Pride carnival!

@@StackingLimit Important things are the husks of the future. If you know anything about channels, you take the avg views for the past 2 years only to see how it is doing, minus outliers which are usually hot topic clicks rather than channel fans. This channel gets on avg about 150 views a video, and i'm being generous. It is dead. His gleeful gloating in this video is just ugly and shallow. Instead of celebrating the month and what it stands for he is "owning people." That is very sad, and pandering. There is nothing of value in this or any video i clicked on.

I just wanted to add, as someone who recently picked up PRESSURE & for those of us who like digital format... the Kindle format is fabulous. Osprey built a native Kindle format book rather than forcing the PDF-on-kindle format, which some other publishers have done with Kindle. What does this mean? You can re-size and re-flow the font on your digital device. This means, it is as readable on a mobile phone as it is on an iPad because you can simply resize the text. Yes, the small form factor for Osprey Games' RPGs is FANTASTIC, but the native Kindle books are awesome. You can tell that Osprey are experienced book publishers, not just RPG publishers. 100% pure class, IMO. Also, the game... Same base rules as THOSE DARK PLACES, but modified for more extended play & providing more setting information as well. It's basically a one-dice system where you roll a d6, add your base attribute/skill, and try to exceed a target number (with "7" being the average requirement for success). Very simple, very light, very fast. The skill section isn't long, and the game encourages you to make up skills as you see fit, which is nice. Some people (us Americans) are puzzled by Ranged combat requiring training to use the skill... because many of us know how to handle firearms, whereas Mr. Hicks comes from a background where he wouldn't know what to do with a gun if someone handed one to him. (So... in my house rules, I'd just say that you can use Pistols untrained, and all else requires training. It's a simple compromise, anyway.) It's all very simple, very rules light. I don't know how it'll take to extended campaign play, but it does feel like a good game that you can pick up and just play. And not everything needs to be over-wrought and overly complicated in the gaming space, IMO.

I'm very interested in this game but with the exchange rate it will cost me around $50 (including shipping). I could print the PDF for less but I really love books so I don't think I would like to have it as a PDF. If it was a bit cheaper, i would already own it because it looks really fun. Right now I just can't spend the $50. Maybe someday.

Thanks Paco! Quite curious myself about this, so it's nice to see your quick pagethru. It's on my 'complete the set' list anyway - lol - but (like you) I really liked the first three books. Still haven't played the fourth, Elysium, but when I learned of this it seemed they'd make quite good companions for each other. This book does appear a little thin however, especially by comparison with the other books. It's not got many more pages than The Gray Death adventure book, which seems incongruous considering the vastness of the expansion into space. Maybe there'll be an adventure to expand it with some ships and shuttles etc…? My Mutant Year Zero - Zone Wars (skirmish game) boxes should be arriving today, so I'm certain I'll be excitedly distracted from my schedule and diving into those - then doing the shelving shuffle to fit more in the house!
