I remember riding at the motocross track at Laguna Seca in 1993, and I was just playing around on my Yamaha 490. One slow corner was about a foot deep of dusty dirt and apparently Ricky was trying to pass me and I punched it and made him wipe out with all the dirt in his face. Later he cam up to me and gave me his goggles. At the time, I had no idea who he was, and was baffled. I didn't have a good pair of goggles so I just used them! I should have saved them!!

As it was a litmus test race track. To be a successful pro back then required the ability to be successful at Ascot.

"Rocket" Ricky Graham! Took a friend to his first dirt track race to the Indy mile and we went into the infield so we could go down to the fence between turns 3 and 4, he was totally blown away! Graham won that race and we went down to the podium after the race and he got to get close to Graham and some other riders, he couldn't believe how small they were in comparison to what they could do on those bikes! I loved watching Graham ride along with Parker, Springsteen, Boody, Shobert, they could really put on a show!!

Thank you for posting that . my friend who's Harley-Davidson all the time t h i n k s that Harley-Davidson is the fastest thing around and he doesn't realize and I've tried to convince him Harley-Davidson has been paying for rule changes all their career since 1968 remember when Honda kicked the Harley's asses and then the AMA made Honda restrictor carburetors 2 mm smaller than the Harley's

I was going to say how the the XR750 Harley Davidson was built using old technologies, which it was, when you compared it to the Honda special built flat track motor, you know, the Honda with overhead cams and 4 valves per... but I was looking up the HD XR750 and found this fascinating article on the history of the XR Harley... www.cycleworld.com/story/motorcycle-racing/50-years-of-the-harley-davidson-xr750-evolution/

I rode there for 25 years. The BLM closed it down. They didn't want people to get anywhere near that mine that was clearly fenced off with lots of activity going on. There is something in that mine the government doesn't want anyone to know about.

I rode against Rick on the Ascot half-mile as both a novice and a junior. As a novice Rick would launch off the TT jump but when landing he'd keep the front wheel in the air all the way to the right-hander. Never saw anyone else do that!

Anyone notice that Gene isn't wearing gloves? Would've been interesting to hear his thoughts on that.
@phillybeef2117 ай бұрын
That was a fairly common practice back in the '60s and early '70s.... Some riders felt more in control with bare hands

@@phillybeef211 Doable at San Jose, but not so much at Ascot! In addition to gloves, hand guards and shin guards many of us put a layer of foam rubber under our leathers. Thanks for the upload, those were the days...

It is so nostalgic to see how those US ex-dirt bikers dominated and revolutionized the sport. King Kenny Roberts. Steady Eddie Lawson. Fast Freddie Spencer. Randy Mamola. Kevin Schwantz. Wayne Rainey. A crazy amount of talent for merely a decade or so.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't all AMA classes back then 'claiming stakes'?
@phillybeef21111 ай бұрын
Seems to me, in my uneducated knowledge on the subject. (...reading Cycle News back in the day....). I remember when Gary Scott claimed a National winning factory HD (at San Jose?)... And the HD Team wasn't too happy... I also kinda remember that the AMA used the claiming rule in years where it benefited what the AMA wanted. And they use no-claiming rules some years for the same reason. Like if a big manufacturer, say, HONDA- was going to go big in many facets of AMA racing, they, Honda would lobby the ama to install the NO Claiming rule... This way, the mfg's could invest in (AMA) racing and that would help Honda to.., Win on Sunday - sell on Monday to recoup their investment $$ .... I don't know about all classes having a claim rule, but I think the rule would be unfair to the amature racers and would probably diminish race participation across the nation.
