It needs big air tires so it can hunt on the beach. Make it waterproof and have it hunt out in the surf!

Thanks for the info! The other thing I've found with these is that even those clearly labelled HMC are actually QMC chips. If you use the QMC with the HMC library in arduino at least, you often see static values reported and gross errors.

May be late now, but for posterity still. About the custom library not found in examples, search for the name of the example he used "HMC5883l calibrate" in your system files. You'll see the file in the .ino format, an executable script. Launch it from there and it opens the Arduino IDE with the entire code inside. About not seeing any output, I didn't see too, but somebody in the comment says you should just use the offset he used for his main code...ie, copy his main code that way after calibrating your compass manually. If you have tangible information, I could use some help.

Can you run the calibration and the compass programs at the same time so that you can pass the calibration offsets as parameters to the compass program instead of hard coding them in?

You really can't use the arduino uno. You really need need to use the mega; otherwise, the wiring and programming would need to be modified.

Good catch. I was curious why my fine angle knippers were struggling and had to be re-sharpened, when I tried to clip the excess from some headers. So.... #1 buy good solid brass headers, #2 do not use the headers that come with your cheap sensors, #3 if in doubt - use the magnet. Check any wire terminal ends too. I just checkes some of mine after this video, and turns out my wire connect terminals were ferrous also. My mistake, I have the super-awesome molex brand, but just used a cheap cable in my box of stuff. Steel header pins is Japan's "thank you" back to the USA for dropping the bomb.

I'm very impressed with this device and I too had this same idea and have been compiling information before I attempt to build my rendering of a similar droid. But I am interested in conversating with the creator of this one about some of the ideas I would like to do before doing so and potentially avoiding dozens of pitfalls that may have previously been encountered because I am impressed by the creators effort on this device. @@giftlightbulbs6423 It certainly is a possibility, my idea is to one day use it on the beach. Because there are usually people on the beach I wouldn't be able to leave it unattended and would need to have it detect smaller areas. It could just spin around and mark the area with it's tire marks. Then I could easily go back and dig up the targets will it's scanning a different area. I have since moved on to a different design altogether, this design is just too difficult for the average Joe to build. I'm hoping to simplify this over the next year.
