I would have said this was fake if there wasn't well documented record data to back it. Absolutely insane, especially that this was 11 years ago.

Does shallow water reduce tip vortex drag on the hydrofoils like it does for an aircraft wing in ground effect?
@paularsen1
@paularsen1 Жыл бұрын
Yes it does. The WSSRC have set lower depth limits to prevent people taking advantage of this. The kite-boarders were probably best able to take advantage of shallow water prior to this.

@@paularsen1 you might want to take a look at a NASA white paper by AL Bowers on the Prandtl wing. Al did a bunch of work on drag reduction via twist.

Just discovered Paul...when is SR3 coming?...All of what you and team did is truely awesome and inspiring... drone footage considering wind speed and the technology of drones at time is mental. At that wind speed I'm guessing flight time of drone was sub 3 min at best

I don't understand, why don't you foil it? you want less friction, hydrofoil it, with self leveling software, servos, to prevent exiting the water, stay level, and fly beyond your craziest nightmares! you still have a huge contact surface with the water, and with foil you also smooth out the ride, because man, you're getting shaken savagely, seriously!

I’d like to think a kitefoil rider could go as fast, but I think the limiting factor would be how much force the sailor could transmit from the kite to the foil, through their harness, arms, legs and feet. That’s something Mr. Larsen did not have to deal with, which in no way diminishes the accomplishment.

2:36. Isn't it called cavitation?
@cillianwilliamson16
@cillianwilliamson16 Жыл бұрын
It's kind of a technicality. Cavitation is usually associated with fully submerged foils. Ventilation happens on foils near the surface or more commonly on surface piercing foils, when air is sucked down to the low pressure side of foils. The dynamic pressure of the liquid drops low enough below atmospheric pressure,sucking air and causing an air cavity. Regular Cavitation happens when the dynamic pressure on the foil drops below the vapour of the fluid which essentially boils a forms a vapour cavity.

who or what decides the fixed (?) angle of the sail mast from the earth surface horizontal ? 1:55 you'd expect all things on the sail to be actuatable from the pilot, yet this angle (30degrees from the vertical?) is fixed..

I think the foil went from being side ventilated... and thus effectively skidding/planing solely on the high pressure surface to being "wetted" on both surfaces and base ventilated (as designed). This latter mode generates lift on both surfaces and thus "skids" less. The foil bit in. You can actually see the spray pattern change in the overhead view. We included all the interesting bits in this very specific edit... as I use it for talks to highlight the key points:) I hadn't seen or felt the boat do this before. I had to make a large correction to the wheel when it happened (Highly geared steering).
