65 knot + Rocket Ride Anniversary edit.

With so many people asking "what is it like" to sail this boat at this speed, we thought it was time to do a more 'pure' edit of our fastest, final incredible run. This run shows Vestas Sailrocket 2 absolutely smashing the outright world speed sailing record and easily becoming the sports first true 60 +knot boat. She averaged 65.45 knots over the 500 meter course and hit a peak speed of 68.33 knots (78+mph, 126 + kmh).
Beware, this contains the actual audio from the helmet of the Australian pilot... and there was swearing.
We had it covered from many angles and all those little cameras cost us a little bit of speed... so we might as well use all the footage that was captured. All the shots here are from the third run of the day and are edited to the actual voice recording of the pilot in real time. The video shows the full sequence of a full run from being released from the support RIB to burning down the 500 meter course in under 15 seconds... and of course the celebration that ensued. Some of the details to look out for are when the leeward side of the boat buries underwater whilst trying to get started and when the big, low speed rudder drops down at speed on the back float (you can see it kick the boat sideways at the start of the high speed section).

It is not that it took eleven years of effort and funding to get there. It is that during those eleven years of effort and sacrifice that the record was steadily moving upwards and further from their grasp. Yet belief in a rocket scientist and sailors ideas from a 1962 book held firm and after all the pain and obstacles were done with the last explosive run was miraculous and revealing. Not only was a record broken it was obliterated by a massive margin that some how is the reward for backbone and perseverance. Let all comers take warning as to the significance of where the bar has been raised and give pause and respect to what secrets of the universe have been revealed to mankind. Sailing is not boring, it never was but some thought it so, this reality is proof of what intellect, skill and effort can achieve. Bless us all for meriting to witness such a milestone in our days. Three years later I can still scarcely believe what Paul Larson and the team accomplished here. His speed record is so astonishing (he raised the world speed sailing record by an unheard of margin of 10 knots!) that future hopeful record speed sailors will be forced to perform first rate engineering on a design far outside the box, and flawless execution. High performance sailing is changed forever. For now one has to assume that Larson has put the sailing speed record bar far out of reach. What's interesting will be the speculation and analysis for how long the bar is out of reach?

+Viking War Pickle The Sailrocket2 is an elegant -and unusual - solution to balance the opposing forces of a sail driven craft. Key to this result, and not evident from the video, is that the keel/skeg (hung off the windward side of the boat) is inclined at the same angle as the sail/wing so that the forces of the wing and keel are equal and opposed. The keel essentially functions as a "hook" into the water to keep the boat planted and stable at highspeed. (Although a different conversation, because of the ability to *hook* into the water there are some designers who think a sail-driven craft will ultimately be fastest on the water, not on land or ice.) All the rest of the design is aimed at minimizing hydrodynamic (and aerodynamic) drag. What is somewhat observable in the video is that at full noise, the SR2 has contact with the water in only 2-3 places- and a minimum of contact at that: the keel (which functions as both a *hook* and hydrofoil), the steering skeg on the front floatation pod, and occasional contact of the rear pod. It's also worth mentioning that the keel design required an entirely new thinking process to avoid the extreme drag caused by cavitation...the hydrodynamic equivalent in water to breaking the sound barrier. This is Wright Brothers-type innovation. The keel is designed to *super-cavitate*, but aside from that, is of an extremely proprietary design. The boom holding the wing has an outboard wing (the horizontal section outside of the inclined wing) designed to lift the pod out of the water at approximately 50 knots and above of apparent wind. Interestingly, the horizontal wing has trim tabs that enable it to be *flown* higher or lower depending upon the expected speed. On the record breaking Saturday, the trim tab was rigged as far to the negative as possible, and it still flew too high on the record run, which prevented sheeting in the wing any farther which prevented the production of even more power to push the SR2 faster. My understanding is that this may have been the speed-limiting factor on record Saturday, as Paul Larson has said that he believes that the SR2 can exceed 70 knots.

This record was set in 29 knots of wind (gusts). The design exploits the concept of apparent wind, which is far too complex to explain here. If you are a pilot or a sailor, it's relatively easy to understand but let's say the faster you go, the more power you get.

I’d like to think a kitefoil rider could go as fast, but I think the limiting factor would be how much force the sailor could transmit from the kite to the foil, through their harness, arms, legs and feet. I think the foil went from being side ventilated... and thus effectively skidding/planing solely on the high pressure surface to being "wetted" on both surfaces and base ventilated (as designed). This latter mode generates lift on both surfaces and thus "skids" less. The foil bit in. You can actually see the spray pattern change in the overhead view. We included all the interesting bits in this very specific edit... as I use it for talks to highlight the key points:) I hadn't seen or felt the boat do this before. I had to make a large correction to the wheel when it happened (Highly geared steering).

Fair question:) VSR2 was designed to test the outer corners of what a sailing "boat" can do. It remains totally reliant on the interactions of wind and water to propel itself. That's the sailing part. As for the boat... well it can fully support itself and it's occupant whilst stationary. In this respect I personally distinguish it from the "board" riders who's craft aren't buoyant when stationary or in the kiters case, can't support their rigs without wind. I'm by no means saying neither are perfectly viable... but it's a relevant means of differentiation... especially if you try and scale these craft up. I consider them all to be sailing craft. Whether it's a square-rigger, kite, wing-sail, sloop, ketch etc is irrelevant. It's simply wind and water. The rules state the craft must remain in contact with the water. There are in fact many rules in place to try and make sure that contenders for the speed sailing titles remain true to the simple and pure interaction of wind and water. One example is that you can't use any stored energy. This is important as it can come in many forms... such as potential energy from a diving glider aiming to drag a wingtip through the water.
