Amazing idea; however, the challenge is to convince people that sprouts and microgreens are good alternatives to traditional salads. Vertical farming is practiced in many parts of the world for those who insist on eating fully-grown vegetables.

I'm glad to see you doing this comparison. I've been using the smaller hydroponic trays I bought from you a few years ago. I put a single layer of paper towel down and cover with a little soil. I plant 4 grams broccoli seeds and I yield over 60 grams of broccoli micro greens. I'm only growing for myself so that's why I only plant 4g. But I have broccoli micro greens everyday because of its health benefits and I grow a lot other micro greens in 5x5 trays. Works great for one or two people. Love your videos

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It’s amazing to hear how well your setup is working for you, especially with such a great yield from just 4 grams of broccoli seeds. Broccoli microgreens are definitely a powerhouse when it comes to health benefits, and it's awesome that you're able to enjoy them daily. I agree - the 5x5 trays are perfect for small-scale growing, especially when growing for yourself or a couple of people. Keep up the great work, and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! 🌱

Another informative video. I am enjoying the reusable grow medium. As long as the seeds don’t fall through the mesh can most anything be grown on mesh? Or do some crops need to have soil or coco coir?
@OnTheGrowКүн бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, as well as the reusable medium! Yes, that is mostly correct. There are a few seed varieties such as Swiss Chard, Beets, Cilantro, and borage that don't do well with this medium type due to their germination preferences! Plus, I noticed some herb varieties as well. Really, the best thing to do is test and see.

Another great video! I can't wait until we can get our greenhouse setup and we can start to grow microgreens and full salad crops via the Kratky hydroponic method. We want to try both with soil and without just like you did, only since they will be in a greenhouse, we will only need to supplement with lighting at night. Do you all run your lighting 24/7 after you flip into the photoperiod part of the grow, or do you allow for a dark/nighttime part in the last 7 days?
@OnTheGrowКүн бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Exciting to hear about your upcoming greenhouse setup. For our microgreens, we typically run the lights 17 hours on and 7 hours off once we flip into the photoperiod stage, as this mimics natural daylight conditions and gives the plants a rest period. Running lights 24/7 can cause stress on the plants and might lead to leggy growth. In a greenhouse setting, you should have great results supplementing with nighttime lighting when needed. Best of luck with your growing, and feel free to share your progress!

FULL OF SUGARS
@OnTheGrow2 күн бұрын
"The sugar content in microgreens can vary depending on the type, but on average, a 1 oz (28g) serving of microgreens contains around 0.1 to 0.5 grams of sugar. This amount is quite minimal, especially compared to other vegetables, making microgreens a low-sugar option suitable for most diets, including those managing blood sugar levels." - we haven't heard that they have high sugars before, do you care to share your source of info? 🌱🌱

It seems like the term "microgreens" is used when seeds are sprouted in a way that allows them to grow really strong and upright, as in soil or hydroponically. And "sprouts" is used when they are grown in jars or trays where they just get watered but don't get any nutrients, which really limits their growth. So microgreens are basically sprouts if they were treated better, lol. I find sprouts rather lackluster but microgreens are amazing.

If you like doing sushi night at home but cant afford real wasabi try this. I sprout Japanese red mustard seeds. Grow to micro green size if you like or eat as sprouts. They have an intense wasabi hit to them that is phenomenal in sushi rolls or on sashimi. I grow out a few big plants each year to just harvest more seed for my sprouts. You just have to remember to start them about 6 to 7 days earlier

Food grown in good soil offers benefits that liquid does not.
@OnTheGrow7 күн бұрын
You're absolutely right! 🌱 While hydroponics offers efficient, nutrient-dense growth, soil brings its own set of unique benefits. Soil-grown microgreens can tap into a rich diversity of minerals and beneficial microbes that aren’t present in a water solution, often resulting in enhanced flavor and a more complex nutrient profile. However, adding fertilizers to hydroponics can help bridge this gap by providing essential nutrients, allowing hydroponic microgreens to reach similar or even higher nutrient density. It really comes down to what you're looking to achieve with your grow, as well as what fetilizers and even soil you're using! Both methods have their perks. 🌱

@OnTheGrow7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! If you're growing microgreens outdoors, they generally need around 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight each day. However, it's important to monitor them, as too much intense sun can cause them to dry out quickly or become sunburned, especially in hotter climates. Good luck with your outdoor growing! 🌱

Hi ONTHEGROW I watch many of your vids I really love it. I have a question is there any alternative option for Ocean Solution 2-0-3 ? Because I check on website, It's didn't have option for ship outside USA. I live in south east Asia btw Thank you.
@OnTheGrow7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your support! If you're looking for an alternative to Ocean Solution 2-0-3, you might want to consider other liquid seaweed or kelp-based fertilizers that are more accessible in your region. Products with similar N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) ratios, like 2-0-3 or even 1-0-2, can work well. Alternatively, you could try making your own nutrient solution using water-soluble fertilizers, ensuring you adjust the concentration to avoid overfeeding your microgreens. If you have access to compost tea or worm castings, they can also be great natural options. ps- did you try placing an order through our website? We ship internationally to most places, and to figure out if we can ship to you, you'd need to try placing an order and imputing your address information, then our system will determine shipping costs as well as if we can ship to you or not. www.onthegrow.net Hope this helps! 🌱

I don’t have any equipment to film with but do have a iPhone to start. I’m just now redoing the grow room-rearranged shelves and towers. So I’m thinking it may be a good time to start putting a channel together. Like a “ here’s my grow space from day one “ kind of thing. The Lovecraft idea has a bit more depth and parts to work out. I have cancer patients so I can’t use ocean solution and hydroponic system for growing cuz they are not allowed to take any kind of chemicals, i always wanted to use hydroponic but not using it for them
@OnTheGrow9 күн бұрын
It's understandable that you'd want to be cautious about what you're growing for cancer patients. I (mandi) remember when I was 11 and my big sister was in the hospital for acute myeloid leukemia, we had to be really cautious. While hydroponic systems often use nutrient solutions that are seen as "chemicals," it's important to note that many of these nutrients are the same minerals that plants would naturally uptake from soil-just delivered in a more controlled manner. If you’re still interested in hydroponics, you could explore organic nutrient solutions made from natural sources like compost tea or seaweed extract, which might align better with your needs. There are organic solutions as well as synthetic. We use organic. Always consult with a healthcare professional and do your own research, though. That way, you can ensure it's appropriate for your patients' specific requirements. Also, thank you for doing the work you're doing with cancer patients.

600 years after that silicone pad goes into landfill, it will be essentially unchanged. Stainless steel is significantly more eco friendly.
@OnTheGrow10 күн бұрын
You bring up a great point about the long-term environmental impact of silicone versus stainless steel. While it’s true that silicone doesn’t biodegrade quickly, its durability allows for multiple uses over a long period, reducing the need for replacements. However, if you're aiming for the most eco-friendly option, stainless steel does have the advantage of being fully recyclable. Both materials have their pros and cons, but I can see why you’d lean towards stainless steel for a more sustainable choice.
