Very useful video, especially for the beginners! The whole connecting the bus bars properly thing, is so important... I personally got really sick of connecting my bus bars to each other with each project, especially since my jumper kits don't come with a pre-cut wire length for that, so I went through all my breadboards and connected them nice and neatly with perfectly cut length wires, and now I just leave them on my breadboards in storage. Like you, I feel like crossing the board/chip with wires is just barbaric... I literally go a little crazy if my breadboard starts to look like a messy nest, so I wasn't having any of that. LOL Although, on a side note: I do wish breadboards had some optional way to quickly connect the busses together, without having to run jumpers all the way across, built into them by default... PS: Also, looking up datasheets all the time finally drove me to buy a laser printer. Now I print and staple them into booklets (booklet printing is aaaawesome!), and I've got myself a nice little library going. This was great with my 9-LED driver chip's datasheet, because it's almost 60 pages long and has a bunch of programming stuff I needed to learn, so I would take that booklet with me and I could read it at the table, or on the go, until I was finally able to digest and understand this complex chip.
@Prof.K.15 күн бұрын
I would love to see that booklet! It sounds like a handy gem. I don't know why the bus bars are not connected. I wonder if it's because we are meant to join breadboards together. Although I rarely see projects that large. I get a bit particular about wiring habits too. I like your word barbaric. I will use that. "Barbaric Rats Nest". :) A pleasure.

Its called a "breadboard" because we would glue a schematic a wooden board and pound little brass nails into it and then wire up all of the components to create a functional circuit. I dont know of anyone that actually used their mothers breadboard. It's just a slang term. I did exactly this as a class project for a transistor radio at DeVry in Phoenix AZ. Its similar to point to point wiring that was common for vacuum tube radio's. I did that in my senior year of High school in 1974. That is a " Proto-board" (brand name) used in the video and are the evolution and work great for integrated circuits "IC's" and because no nails or soldering is required its much faster but the end result is not a cool looking! (DIP is "Dual Inline package" not processor. The correct way to hold one is with your fingers on the ends - never touch the leads with your fingers. you dont want to bend or contaminate the leads.

I would love to see your 1970s prototypes. Post pics here if you have them.

@@Prof.K. Oh I wish I still had that breadboard. I kept it for many years and it disappeared in a move I think. It was a kit radio that included a PC board but the instructor had us breadboard and build each section (stage) of the radio after a lecture - during lab time. Fond memories. I had not even thought about it until I saw your video! Thank you. I do have a recent tube phono pre-amp that is point to point wiring. I should do a short and post it...

Thanks, Prof. Never seen that brought together at the end. So, I assume that you meant to include the "proportional" symbol, instead of the "=" symbol in that last equation since obviously change of flux is not "equal" to current. I'm wondering if some kind of constant exists so that the units would work out?
@Prof.K.2 ай бұрын
Indeed, proportional would be correct. I think the constant would be a relationship that’s not constant at all, and probably described by someone somewhere down this rabbit hole. :). Thanks for your input.

I'm a little confused here. You talk about AC current in the video and your diagram of two coils is the conventional way of showing a transformer. However, the voltage source is the symbol for a battery, meaning that this is a DC circuit. In that case, in a very short time after closing he switch, there will be no secondary current because the primary flux will no longer be expanding. I think that should have been pointed out.
@Prof.K.2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your articulate and accurate response. This is indeed mutual inductance as is applicable in a transformer. However, the context of this particular video is about collapsing and growing primary current/flux and in particular the equal-but-opposite growing and collapsing secondary. I used DC current so the practical notion of a switch could be used (not a transformer circuit). This is so I could show the INSTANTANEOUS effect of the primary current growing or collapsing (thereby creating primary flux, opposing secondary flux, and secondary current). Agreed, the context in practical life is not applicable, but I find it a useful way for students to grasp the opposing flux DIRECTION when they already understand mutual inductance in the context of transformers. Admittedly it’s well within the weeds of magnetic theory.

@@Prof.K. Interesting. Thanks for the clarification. I'm so used to seeing this kind of principle demonstrated using a single coil in a DC current that I never thought that it could also be illustrated by using 2 coils. Good job.
