Archer has been tight lipped about Midnight's sound. EVTOL Research (www.youtube.com/@EVTOLresearch) took it upon themselves to film both the S4 and Midnight, taking off and landing. You should listen and revisit what you say at 6:06 Midnight sounds quite loud and annoying to me, especially in contrast to the S4. Also, at 9:09, you discuss that Boeing was unable to vertically integrate. Weren't they broken up by anti-trust regulators? Since this is an international field nowadays, I very much doubt that Joby will suffer the same fate.

How are getting to that conclusion? The FAA and EASA are actively working on that. All my talks with them confirm this. HOwever, yes, it will be more difficult, expansive, and expand than expected, but thing out of the usual or aviation.

@ElectricAirMobility there isn't any real evidence that any evtol can lift the weight of people and their battery for 5 full minutes anywhere on earth. They use jumpcut edits and music to look like it. If someone can't build an evtol with a basic light skeleton frame and have a person sitting directly on a battery for several minutes I doubt they can with a canopy and seats and all the safety equipment and radios and air conditioning and stuff needed to certify. Where is the best evidence you can find that it's even possible? Why doesn't joby take a few hundred pounds of weight that isn't extra battery a few miles on an unedited vid and raise their stock? According to the square cube law the bigger they are the harder they will be to fly. If you ever see proof, please let me know.

Lillium is on a non-recoverable downward spiral due to insurmountable design flaws. The acoustic signature is completely unacceptable and due to disk loading, the engines can provide neither safe nor stable flight.

It's a lot easier (and cheaper I imagine) building a eSTOL than a eVTOL.. The problem I see is that a eSTOL just isn't as sexy as an eVTOL which could affect funding.
@ElectricAirMobility
@ElectricAirMobility 3 ай бұрын
You're so right. I remember so many great conversations with Mac Ausman and others in that field about the inherent difficulties of eVTOL designs, including certification, and how much simpler eCTOL/eCTOLs are. When you look at the performance level the latter, eSTOLs encroach on eVTOL operations while not completely replacing them. It's a fascinating race and I'm pretty sure eSTOL will beat eVTOLs, especially in the longer UAM range of operations, cargo and fleet, and of course RAM.

Sadly, that is the case. However, for certification, that is a plus. However, for investors, that is both, a plus and a minus. A plus for aviation investor veterans, a minus for those wanting quick returns n profits in aviation, usually an oxymoron :)

I think the key with any company being successfully vertically integrated is to have a good management team that can solve the problems that pop up. Hopefully Joby is up to the challenge.
@ElectricAirMobility
@ElectricAirMobility 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right, good management, the right resources, and of course, the correct funding. Joby was very judicial about its strategy. Although many questioned its full vertical integration philosophy, they have now partnered with Skyports and others to off-load that which would have dragged them down. It's a safe bet to say they'll be around for a long time, save for any unforeseeable and extremely silly mistakes they could make.
@terminal99

It's good to hear that you saw the Joby S4 and Archer Maker transition from vertical to winged flight. It's a little concerning that the Midnight has not done it yet. The Midnight is 3000 pounds heavier than the Maker. Hopefully there isn't a problem. Do you have any guess as to when Joby might get full FAA certification for the S4?
@ElectricAirMobility
@ElectricAirMobility 3 ай бұрын
Both are on track and yet despite the superficial similarities, you spotted it well, they are different. The article and video I posted here was to talk about the fundamental differences in business models both chose to follow. I'm thinking about doing a more in-depth one about their propulsion choice difference, which is very revealing. It's not too concerning that the Midnight hasn't transitioned yet. Archer got a late start compared to Joby and has caught up very quickly. As to that question about FAA certification, I'm sure you're aware of the differences between getting prototype certification and mass produced certifications. The first is fairly easy, all things considered. The latter is exponentially more difficult and wildly more expensive. It will take time, many years. That's why a lot of companies chose the STOL/CTOL configuration route that is easier to certify. Even Jaunt Air Mobility's compound aircraft is easier to fully certify than a pure eVTOL.

You're right and that's the nature pf the media beast. I was a journalist in these fields for 17 years and it was tough maintaining my independence. For the most part, as journalist we skim over news articles as they are mostly rehashes and sometimes re-posts of press releases. The best bet is always to stick to independent specialized media. It's not easy access quality free news and education content but it's possible. Thanks for your comment.
