Yes, they seem that at least they tried to avoid the clamsiness of using either, simple jumper wires or Grove connections and moved forward. Mind you, LEGO use similar connectors in NXT & EV3 Mindstorms.

There are so many alternatives nowadays! But I so much agree, it depends how an educator "serves" the available goods

Dear @pinkypepper. The programming environment is called "Mind+" (mindplus.cc) and it is a derivative app of "Scratch 3.0", (that is why it looks so familiar) but with many more enhancements.
