I have an AI-S 400mm f2.8 manual focus and when you nail the shot, the results are amazing! Af and manual focus are frustrating to use but for different reasons and nailing the shot with manual feels so much better

I love comments about the “golden hour “. In and around Brisbane in South East Queensland my wife and I have been around for the morning golden hours, the evening golden hours and everything in between. When we have been out in the middle of the day we “overhear” many comments about being out at the wrong time of the day. We usually see and hear and have as many or more good photo opportunities in the middle of the day as at any time. A far more important variable is wind. Doesn’t matter what time of day you are out and about, the wind is a spoiler. And for coastal regions or estuaries, tide times are more important. A case in point was a week ago. We had no choice but to be out between 11:00am and 2:00pm. It was 36°C. The bird species count was typical for the location but numbers of birds was amazing. Never seen so many black kites (50+) or white ibis (100+). For anyone in Brisbane it was Swanbank Lagoon near Ipswich. Do what you can, when you can with what you have with someone you care about.

What a let down, was advertised as a “LIVE” judged contest, but only a few were actually judged live! Having live critiques done by actual wildlife photographers was the draw, not doing just the top few on each category. False advertising!
@JeremyNeipp2 ай бұрын
Dwain, it stated clearly on our website that only the finalists could be judged live for sake of time and I said the same in our promo videos. Otherwise the event would be over 24 hours and no one would have that kind of patience. There is a live recap following the event in which anyone who submitted could opt in to have their image reviewed by me.

Very interesting thoughts on this video with 2 full time wildlife photographers. For me i always try to improve and watch other peoples videos, from the two of you, and learn these concepts and techniques to improve my photography. Id say my own limitation is the usage of post processing programs such as lightroom, photoshop, topaz etc... I feel that getting to know these programs to a decent depth of knowledge, is essential in evolution of photography. I would also say composition is my weakness, and these things and i feel that backgrounds in the area in which I live, cant always have creamy bokeh's, lovely colours or perfect lighting int he areas you want. There is just so much stuff that i feel was addressed in this video and it is very insightful to hear this. One key factor you mentioned at the end is knowing having an idea of how you are going to develop the photo in post processing; i struggle with this, what are the tips associated with this in order to start to think in this way? Excellent video and enjoyed a lot.
@officialwilder2 ай бұрын
Love the comment! I think you're correct in that learning the depth of those post processing programs will change your capabilities as a photographer drastically. As someone who still attempts to remain true to pretty natural edits, I'd say that shooting with post-processing in mind allows me to know what's possible to be recovered, enhanced, or ignored in the editing. Honestly I'd say a lot of it comes with time and experience, but start picking apart certain elements of the frame you like as you are looking through your viewfinder and that you want showed off and then asking yourself questions out in the field about what this scene will look like after the blacks have been pulled down... the tone curve has been snaked... the saturation has been enhanced... etc. Asking yourself those questions will get your brain trained to think that the image isn't complete when the shutter is pressed, but there is more to look for in editing. Just my humble approach :)

Great to see the 2 of you collaborating again. I love it when either of you drop a new video. That last answer of Evan’s is why I watch some people’s videos and click-off from others. Trying to balance personal creativity with the pressures of the work as a business is a challenge for sure. You both are genuine and transparent about wanting to please the audience and analyzing what works, so that will help you continue to be successful, I'm sure. The difference between photographing in Yellowstone vs Alaska was also very interesting. Those Alaska Grizzlies give a whole new perspective to "clamming"!

You should add a young category for young photographers, and maybe make it free
@officialwilder3 ай бұрын
The cost to put on the competition is a lot more than it looks like possibly on face value, so unfortunately free is out of the picture. However, there is a New Photographers category that levels the playing field for new people! Lots of young photographers wind up placing in that category.

Thank you for this fantastic comparison video! Question if you happen to see this - I have a Canon 1200d body, a hand-me-down gift from an old friend. 18MP DSLR so it's wildly different technology to their currents, but still some major bang for one's buck getting started. Does the Sigma lens being 'mirrorless compatible' mean it won't be DSLR compatible? Has the EF mount so I'm good for that (1200d is EF and EF-S compatible), but I'm unsure about the idea of putting a 'new mirrorless-compatible lens' on an old mid-2010s DSLR body. I'm working with the Canon 70-300mm IS at the moment and it's fantastic if up close but I really struggle with faraway birds. Might end up renting it soon and give it a whirl to see how it fares, definitely need the extra IS boost because I have the shakiness of a rabbit LOL

Currently I own a Sony RX10M4 and I want to upgrage. I'm thinking about the A7IV or this A7R5. Which one should I choose for mainly wildlife photography? As far as I know the A7IV handles higher ISO better in low light, but the A7R5 has better crop factor because of the much higher megapixels, it's a hard decision. 😅 Is it much worse in low light, and is it much better in auto focusing than the A7IV? Thanks in advance! 😄
