I feel like I need to correct something which has been lost in translation. In the video the gods have the word 椰 in their name pronounced ye the first flat tone which means coconut. This is incorrect. Both these gods should have the word 爷 in their name instead. Also pronounced ye but with the ascending tone. 爷 Means grandfather or elderly uncle. Their names mean big old uncle and second old uncle. Has nothing to do with coconuts whatsoever.
@namyang19546 күн бұрын
Thanks for your insight Hassan. 🙏🏻. ‘Coconut’ was the word that Stephen Tam used and it was he who taught me about these deities. It seemed to be the term in general use amongst these guys in Geylang. They were most certainly not academics or linguists. They had not received much formal education. They were real old style Kung Fu men. And I consider myself privileged to have known them. 🙏🏻

Facial contracion ? Part of conditioning?
@namyang195411 күн бұрын
Great question! It's known as the "Sum Chien" Face. You likely see a few variations, and even names for it, once you start exploring different arts that still do this - check out the famous Shaolin monk Sek Koh Sam demonstrating the expressions of the 18 Lohons. There are a number of reasons to why we do this in our freehand routines, including opening up both the senses and the meridians and developing the tendon in the face and head, even conditioning. The most interesting, though, is the effect it has on our emotional state and how we work through our kung fu with it. :)

Take it very easy. Progress slowly but surely. Injuries really hold you back so don’t risk getting injured. With age comes patience - which gives us old guys an advantage. 😆

Did the Singapore police secret society branch ever have a chat with you? I’m from Singapore and just based on your story I already know the kind of people you hung out with in Singapore. Don’t mean it disrespectfully it just is what it is.
@namyang195418 күн бұрын
Very many thanks for your comment Hassan. 😊. You are quite right about the Kung Fu societies in Geylang. We were based in Lorong 6. Of course as an ‘ang mol Kao’ (red headed monkey) I was never going to progress in the secret societies. Actually Master Tan didn’t want me to have any part in them and kept me out. Looking back he was right. Now Singapore has changed beyond all recognition and both Master Tan and Steven Tam have passed. A great era but not one that will be repeated. 🙏🏻

On a side note. Dua ah pek and ji ah pek, in mandarin da er ye boh has nothing to do with coconuts at all. “Ye” can mean coconut but that is a different word with a different intonation from ye which actually is referencing an elder uncle. So the gods of hell are big and second uncles of hell and not “coconuts” just fyi.

Yes I would, Gods don't guard anything, and IF its the gates to Hell, then they are guarding it for Satan, which makes them merely his minions. All this matters not, because even Satan is a created being of God, therefore a minion under Him. Now if God be for me, who can prosper against me? So yes, I would fight them all, and I would win. So there is my mentality for the answer, based in faith. A great story none the less..thx for the vid.

@namyang195419 күн бұрын
This is a good answer. Clearly it comes from a Christian perspective but nothing wrong with that, we respect all religious beliefs. For the record, Taoism has no Satan and no one God. But it definitely still has a hell. Thanks for your comment. 🙏🏻
