For me here the standouts are Caruso, Lanza and Pavarotti. The version of Lanza's that is used here is not the best version of this recording. Lanza was only 4 month from death at the time this recording was made, and had recently been recovering from pneumonia, however I think also that RCA deliberately 'fuzzed' these recordings to make them sound more like they were from Caruso's era than 1959, there are recordings from this album in Digitally Extracted Stereo of other songs from the same recording sessions of what I presume were the original acetate recordings and they sound nothing like the recording used here. Like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXqso6l5lLqaZ5Y Bjorling's Italian is quite something and to my ear he sounds a little flat in places. Schipa has beautiful phrasing but his voice is very small. I do not think this was Kraus's finest either. Caruso had the privilege of knowing Tosti personally so probably had an advantage in being able to ascertain exactly what he wanted the song to sound like. Pavarotti's recording, like Bjorling's, is live, however Pavarotti stays 100% on pitch, which Bjorling fails to do to my ear certainly. One of Pavarotti's traits was his ability to sound 'live' as close to a studio recording as possible, he does not do that in any of his live recordings of 'Torna a Surriento' as he gets the words wrong on every live recording he made of it, but here he stays remarkably true to what is written.

Have been a devotee of Bjoerlings art since high school in the early 1960's. A music teacher introduced us to his classic album of "La Boheme" which I would subsequently purchase and listened to frequently over the years with Victoria de Los Angeles, Robert Merrill, Lucine Amara, Georgio Tozzi and Beecham conducting. A classic album. Luciano Pavarotti was being interviewed some time ago. The interviewer offered names of previous tenors and asked Pavarotti what his judgment was of these tenors, When it came to Bjoerling he merely stated , "i'm only human." what a tribute from one who was great in his own way.

I have never heard Bjoerling singing the aria “Forze la Soglia Atinza” from un Ballo in Maschera, not even in a full length recording of Ballo of a live presentation at the Met. Why, do you know? I would love to hear the aria complete since all I have is the”Amelia, ah dessa encore and the “Si rivederci Amelia” Do you know of some reason why Bjoerling would not sing that aria?
@michaelmcgrailengland20 күн бұрын
Thanks for listening Rafael. No, I do not know of any reason why the aria should be missing. I suppose it's possible that the recording was cut down to fit a radio slot or perhaps damaged parts of the recording were removed. I'll contact my KZbin friend Shicoff who knows much more about the Met recordings than I do and I'll let you know if I find an answer.
@shicoff139820 күн бұрын
JB did not sing the aria live (or even record it in any studio ever) as he has said it comes after a lot of singing (which is true ) and back then it was cut by some, Del Monaco also cut it "live" but he did studio record it, Jussi didn't , however today they all sing it as required. I suggest any fan of JB's read the "Jussi Bjoerling" Biography by Andrew Farkas and Mrs. Anna Lisa Bjoerling, about the great tenor and the "p "Paul Jackson book" about Met. Brdcsts. "sign off for the old met"1"1 1950's- 1966, where that is mentioned in detail . Jussi said "why sing it, by then being I'm tired" a complaint by not just JB alone!
@shicoff139820 күн бұрын
@@michaelmcgrailengland The aria is not there because he didn't sing it live or in any studio either, by his own Choice.
@shicoff139820 күн бұрын
JB did Not sing the Aria live or in Studio, as it was also the practice back then by some tenors (at least live) , not to sing it not to sing it, Del Monaco live in the 1940's also did not sing it but he did studio rec. it. Ballo being a very long taxing opera for the tenor, see my answer for Michael. Ballo is a lot of singing for the tenor, today they al sing it like it or not. l .

As a preteen, I went to the record store and asked a clerk to help me find the greatest voice alive, he walked me over to the classical section and pulled out La Boheme with Bjorling and De Los Angeles. I took it home and listened to it non-stop, several times. I couldn't get enough. I hooked it up to my guitar amp and blasted it throughout the neighborhood. I searched and purchased every Bjorling recording I could get my hands on. After the three tenors concert in Dodger Stadium, He was asked "Why don't you sound more like Jussi Bjorling?" and Luciano Pavarotti responded, I am but a mere mortal. I have spent my life researching Jussi's technique. There is none other better than he. His silky smooth embellishments and interpretation within the framework of his technique are legendary! I finally learned it was not only his voice that drew me to him... Last year I discovered that Jussi was my great, great Uncle.
