I am a Windows user and prefer MX-linux. But I can say I prefer the system that nvidia works good with and configure my own desktop environment is not an issue. I Used ubuntu LTS since 18 doing upgrades to 20 and to 22 but to 24 didn't go well, thas why I took the step to MX-linux that feels like a system prepared for kompetent computer users that want "comfort". 🙂 Regarding Zorin, i think Zorin having the best Wayland support at this date. I am waiting for xfce to get wayland support.

I started with Kaspersky long ago. Norton and McAfee were bloated dead whales weighing down the OS. But Kaspersky was clean and lean. When you only chose the AV and avoided the Anti-Virus suite, it was a no-brainer for me (My office has a lot of Russian and Ukrainian immigrants--and they went to a lot of websites that Kaspersky blocked) But when I heard the Feds thumbs-down Kaspersky... and certain Russian Oligarches started learning how to fly ... I had to say: "Poka, Poka..." I couldn't trust Kaspersky anymore. Exactly because the Russian Security suspicions. Now I'm using Malwarebytes--but DAMN! I miss the old Kaspersky!

I believed Ubuntu should be lowered because complexity added by snaps/old deb packages. opensuse also requires some manual configuration and you can sometimes get stuff broken through updates if using tumbleweed and should be lowered as well (you are essentially doing release upgrade anytime you upgrade). not sure if leap is better, but I am not a fan of old packages for home usage. But their tooling is really nice for beginners. Also, Fedora isn't that hard to use. ye, I had to use cli to do release upgrade because of incompatibilities, codecs are indeed a problem and annoying to set up and I had to roll back to a mixture of proprietary/opensource versions. About security features, indeed, they can be complicated, although if u are an end user it takes like 5m to disable selinux and firewall. I wish the installer offered options for all that to make it more approachable too

from person experience using these distros. POP_OS with the gnome based DE would be A|B as the desktop tends to break when gnome gets updated, as it's a bunch of plugins. POP_OS when they go live with cosmic DE will be S Mint is S Ubuntu could be S but i'll say A, as it hevy relises on snaps these days. And snaps are still a very WIP packaging format. Fedora is C, would argue mostly because much of the user docs are based on Ubuntu, and that can cause issues when trying to find how-tos Manjaro is D. C if you don't uses the AUR, as it tends to brake due to the AUR expecting you to uses the Arch repos. instead of Manjaros held back repos. dailyed this for two years. and should have reinstalled after 18 months.

I want to like Linux/Gnu distros. I really do. Keep dipping my toes in whenever I have a secondary computer (can't risk main one). But what do Linux enthusiasts mean when they say "powerful" OS? I just want my OS to meekly connect my beloved apps to my beloved hardware and get out of the way? I don't want 9 ways to Sunday window managers. But it's nice not to have to look at ugly all day also. Usually what I find when use Linux is: 1) Weird fonts & windows (obviously open source fonts and interface design are rarely as polished as Apple or MS products -- 2) Showstopping hardware or software incompatibilities that one never would accept in a proprietary OS. Just tried Pop!_OS which everyone enthused about, but ran into some rather basic walls that caused me to wipe it within an hour. I am not saying it was bad, I wanted to like it, I really did. But some basic interface stuff I depend on was just...missing! I used to run Lubuntu on an underpowered laptop (18.04 IIRC). It was light, zippy, and altho not as polished as Ubuntu in appearance, it prioritized what I needed -- software to connect easily with my hardware and my apps. But dual screen functionality was flaky (they would work, until you unplugged one, then they wouldn't), got the WiFi hotspot to work once, then would never do it again (possibly a driver issue, granted), and the file manager had no built in search (that's a separate download). Nuisances like that can be showstoppers if you are relying on a WiFi access point but want to share it using a hotspot for example -- something that is simple on both Windows and Android phones even. Why can't Linux distros do this out of the box without compiling a special driver, standing on your head, and so on? Are hardware component manufacturers that hesitant to embrace Linux? Oh, and can we please just find a way to coexist with Windows boot & other partitions? After we have solved these fundamentals, we can focus on window animation and transparency, and other eye candy.
