I bought your book! Can’t wait to read it! Yup. I am a nurse. Yup it’s so sad because many beautiful talented people especially creative people have these issues. But I think since the internet are helping each other understand, seek care, and outsmart these dreaded issues.

My 2 cents: As someone who has played in many bands for over 50 years I just want to say I get where they all are coming from. They were young and got some questionable advice from people they trusted but the bottom line is this: A band's sound is most definitely the combination of the contributions of every musician in the band. You take out one of them and their sound will change - sometimes for the better - sometimes for the worse. You either have chemistry or you don't. John is obviously a super talented writer and has an amazing unique voice that set them apart on the radio, and his band buddies were the perfect wings that allowed his talent to fly as high as it did. Anyhow, I loved the band and wish they hadn't had to go through this.✌❤🎸

The 2022 mix of TOOM sounds way better. More direct. I never realised Mark was responsible for the phasey, echoey sound, always thought it was Lanois and that it was kinda sloppy sounding..

Ray always rails against alcohol & 'the white powder drugs', so it must be the latter for Robby, as it was the former for Jim. However, he does credit cannabis & psychedelics for opening "The Doors of Perception".

The Grapes were one of the best bands in the '60s and after, and high ion my top ten bands of all time. Their music never gets old. It is timeless and yes, Peter, a lot of fun. Thank you more than I have words to express it.

I loved CCR and John's talent; but would it have hurt to let someone else play a lead solo, occasionally etc.?

The first time I heard 'Lawyers, Guns, and Money', I was in the same room with Herbie Worthington and members of my immediate family. About 15 years or so later, I found myself one weekend as the personal chaffeur for Professor Alan Dershowitz. True story. I found out later that while I was driving Professor Dershowitz around Wash. D.C and Northern Virginia all weekend, my brother was at Keith Richards' house-with his guitar, jamming on tunes. Hmm.

I'm a long time fan of Mark Lanegan; but this story I'm about to tell you is about someone else. In around 2001 I remember I was at a Carrie Akre/ Mark Lanegan show at the Experience Music Project. At one point during the night I was standing at the bar trying to get a Coke but wasn't having success getting the bartender's attention. While I was standing there this country western looking dude came up and struck up a conversation with me. He obviously had some clout because the bartender came up to us right away after he arrived. Well, that cowboy got me my Coke and we talked about Mark Lanegan a little. Soon someone who I assumed was his wife or girlfriend came up to us and started talking to him. He then grabbed his drink, told me to enjoy the show and they disappeared into the crowd. I went back into the crowd as well to find my wife. While we were watching them reset the stage I was telling her about the situation at the bar and this cowboy getting me a Coke. A few minutes later Mark Lanegan came on stage. When I heard him invite his good friend Duff Mckagan on stage we looked at each other giving a visual high 5, and started looking for Duff. You wouldn't guess who I saw walk up on stage... that very same cowboy that just got me a Coke. My jaw most likely dropped just before I told my wife "Duff Mckagan just got me a Coke".

I love John, he’s a hero of mine, but the way he treated stu, Doug and Tom, will always tarnish my my image of him, yeah, we know you wrote the songs, good boy, pat on the back, but making it a mission to exclude the rest of the band’s contributions, just puts him on a much lower level in my mind, so with that said, he’s nowhere comparable to Dylan, or Lennon and McCartney

John treated the other 3 very good until they stared “crapping” in John’s face! These 3 scoundrels sued John when they lost their money in the Castle band, fiasco because John didn’t invest all his money, like they did! John’s Brother Tom sued John for royalties from the songs John wrote! There are other things, also. This is the thanks John got for taking them from garage band status to 1 of the best roots based R&R bands in history!

@@davidkirkham6497 I’m very aware of the other’s behaviour, and the things they did, but at end of the day John stands over them and takes in his sweet revenge, and doesn’t consider how much it makes him look like the villain , I’d have a lot more respect for him as a person if he tried to give ‘em’ (and the fans)one last hurrah before they die, but I’m just man who believes in the virtue of forgiveness instead of revenge, what good am I ?

First time I saw them I was so blown away I had to go see them again just to see if they were really that good. The second time was just as good. Then the troubles started; the 3rd time they were on a bill at Fillmore East with BB King, and one guy would start a song while the others would be playing something else. They were just awful. The magic was gone. They coulda been contenders.😔

I don't mean any offence to Peter Lewis or the rest of the Grape but as an 12 year old in 1967 I took one look at this album cover and thought "this looks like one rich kid (Peter) was supporting a bunch of talented Grunges". It seems I was right. Music brought us all together in those days.

It was interesting. Moby Grape 69 might have been their best "produced" and good for 1969. The debut album album is still their best. 20 Granite Creek was not bad either. Jerry Miller could´ve been a good Nashvile studio player. Give Moby Grape credit , they never quit after disasters.

One of the main reasons I never wanted to be a professional musician is because, in general, the music business is so full of crooks. Katz ruined arguably the most talented band to come out of the mid-60s SF scene. If there's a hell, I hope he is roasting. I grew up in SF and lost count of how many times I saw Moby Grape. This was a great interview but a really cautionary tale for those musicians who want to make it big.

Amazing - thank you for this interview! I was at the early 1990s gig. It was at the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati CA, and Peter recounted the story of going down to get Bob Mosely from under the bridge off I5. The band sounded great, and we had no idea we were seeing an historic reunion, however brief. I think the band performed as The Melvilles.

Stu's compliments of other artists seem like back handed insults to John. Too bad he's so bitter he can't just give John the credit he deserves. I've heard Tom's solo stuff. Even his "hits" are kinda silly and I wouldn't buy them for sure. Never heard of this Rocky guy so I doubt he's the best rock vocalist, but everyone can have their own opinion. Did Rocky make the Rock and Roll HoF?
