People forget,or choose to ignore,that the bike is only half of the machine. I could lose 70 grams taking a dump before a ride.

i always hear comments from my "recreational rider" friends like "the bike is heavy"..."ok, take off your shirt, look yourself in mirror, visually size your love handles" that's what i say. If anyone really really wants to get a lean bike, spend your after-tax money on wheelsets then, not the frame and components, the OLCV 500 w/ 105 is no different than a OLCV 800 w/Ultegra as long as you don't compete Tour De France

If you move away from the corporate spin and just look at the bike as a product you’re going to buy and use for enjoyment the Emonda SL is a great choice. As usually happens when a product is “typed” by the manufacturer, the lines get blurred with time. If the Emonda is a dedicated climbing machine why did my SL7 come with a mid-compact crank and only 30 teeth on the big cog? Have I any intention of changing it? Nope, works just fine. TREK savvy onlookers often comment that it figures that I’d buy the climbing bike (of the 3) and I’ve stopped correcting them. Awesome universally enjoyable example of Carbon Fiber engineering without any artificial ride enhancements. Weight? Seems perfect to me.

I have a Madone 5.2- 2011, size 58, ... being 6'2", it fits me just well (on the stretchy side but well), I'm looking forward to replace/upgrade it to a new Emonda SL (may be 6 or 7), would you recommend to stick to size 58?, thanks

hi, nice review. I am 6.4 or 193 cm, and according to Trek I suppose to buy 62 cm frame size, but I've seen it, and it seems too big, and too long top tube. Not sure what to choose.

Hi I am thinking of buying this bike in the UK, I think I am between sizes 55-56 according to trek size chart, You mention. I am 5'9" tall. Do you think a ,54cm would be okay? Thanks
@ToddJones
@ToddJones Жыл бұрын
It depends how comfortable you are ina more aggressive position, 54 would likely be the right size for you. But I’d pop into your local shop to have someone fit you, it’s a big investment not to have the right size dialled in.

Thanks for the great review. Just bought this exact bike today (cheaper than the 2023 model). Swapped out the wheels for a set of Fulcrum Racing Zero Carbon DB units in 28mm. Carbon bars are going on and a better saddle. I too have a Madone 2012/13 (the factory white, grey, red and light blue). Swapped out the brakes for Ultegra and have Campy Shamals C17 units. One of the best bikes ever made IMO. Hoping this Emonda setup will rival my Madone. Cheers

I have lower back problems (20 years of flying in the Navy). The Domane is the first bike that I can ride on a regular basis. I have ridden a few other endurance road bikes and owned a giant defy prior to my 2021 Domane SL6. Those other bikes are comfortable also but do not compare to what the ISO speed provides. On my Defy, I could go on a 60-mile ride and be ok, but my lower back would be stiff and in pain after the ride and the next day. I could ride my Domane every day if I had the time. So I'm ok with the weight if I can ride it more.

Checkpoint is an Adventure or Gravel bike! A Domane is a ‘comfort’ road bike! I rode road bikes for years! They’re not the most comfortable! You’re in a bent over position and pedaling for hours, at varying speeds! You’re stopping and going, again, in a bent-over position! You know how ‘bad’ for your back that is! Bike simulations and real riding are two completely different things! I only say this because people in the gyms, in spin-classes and on trainers think it’s the same thing! It isn’t! When you’re on the road, bumps, potholes, avoiding cars, people, etc. It all takes a toll on your body! The Domane has the ISO Speed, incorporated, a higher head tube and upwardly angled stem height. The bike is made to be more cushiony! So, it feels, ‘less’ fast! Also, a Checkpoint has a lower, down-tube, protector for riding on gravel and again, two completely different bikes! Why you are comparing the two is beyond me! The Checkpoint is like an off-road road bike, while the Domane is made for people who ‘cannot’ ride a ‘race’ specific road bike, for longer distances and periods! People with physical problems, arthritis, bad backs, neck problems, etc. The jarring and abuse that a super-quick, light, race-ready bike can cause to a person’s body isn’t for everyone! I’m 52, worked in construction for 30 years and am not as ‘physically’ capable as perhaps, 20 years ago!? I want a nice, comfy road bike that when I feel able, I can go a little faster and ride a little more ‘aggressively!’ Period! If you don’t get that, I don’t know why you’re researching so much! After some research, you ought to be finding out some answers! I think some of you are trying to see something that isn’t there! I know FOR A FACT that neither the Emonda or Madone are for me! I cannot even sit on them comfortably! The Domane, what a great bike! I jumped on one for a test ride a week ago, rode 3 miles, spiritedly, with my casual clothes on and just a helmet, as I was all smiles and no back pain when I arrived back at The Trek store in NYC! You have to choose the bike that’s right for you! Forget about what Trek writes about these bikes! It’s advertising! You have to try and ride them!

Awesome review if this bike. It seems the 2022 is not much different. I test rode one (SL5) and now it's burning a hole in my pocket. I agree that although it's not the lightest bike, it is a better made bike. Really comfortable, fast, stable, handles well, efficient. I really appreciate the 1.5 geometry, threaded BB, and the seat mast as opposed to the hidden wedge that seems to always creek and make noise. Also, the traditional but forward looking shape of the frame as opposed to the popular but ugly dropped stays. Trek did their homework and made a bike for the people. It overlaps as a great allrounder and great upgrade platform to be make race ready. The SL5 is the best value to upgrade wheels and tires IMO but a great bike overall. BTW, your buddies Domane is phyre!

You aren’t really doing an apples to apples comparison. Those carbon wheels alone would’ve shaved well over a pound off the weight of the bike, had you not been weighing them with 38 mm gravel tires.
