Much in the same way that aero is 80% contributed by the rider, weight is largely a result of the rider. If you are really concerned about 1-2 lbs it's much easier and cheaper to just cut back on food intake. Unless you are 5% bodyfat and competing for your career I don't see 1 or 2 lbs being a make or break factor.

Im on a 2021 Domane SL5 and absolutely love it. You cant feel the extra weight once you're riding so its a non-issue. Furthermore, its ridiculously comfortable on long rides which translates to being faster on the second half of the day instead of getting beat up on a bike that you bought based on grams.

I have tried out the bike today. Absolutely loved it. All people complaining about the weight of the bike should stop crying and loose that visceral fat to even out. It aint a race bike nor a true gravel like checkpoint is, its just unique. Looks stunning, drives smooth, its really fast and snappy and super comfortable. 2021 version is £2500, a whooping £300 less than Checkpoint sl5. What's the point of comparing it to Emonda sl5 which is a road bike? Emonda 56 frame weights only 1.5lbs less than Domane... emonda geometry is different, head tube is 2.5cm lower which makes a tremendous difference in comfort. I would highly recommend Domaine to anyone

The SLR 6 is a dream to ride. A little more weight, but you don't feel the weight on the road. Very smooth and comfortable ride. The SL is less than a lb. Heavier.

The Domane is a Cadillac compared to the Emonda. There is more feedback on the Emonda compared to the Domane. I was able to do a short test ride today around the parking lot at my LBS and I was surprised that the Emonda fit me better because I like how compact it is. I test rode a size 50. The specs say that the Emonda has a longer reach but I think if the Domane came with a shorter stem, it would be perfect fit for me. I know weight plays an important factor, but the quality of the ride and the type of riding should determine your purchase. I dont get too bent out of shape on weight but there seems to be a trend of bikes getting heavier and heavier.

Great to see someone review the bike and being honest about the weight without trying to smooth it over with marketing/reviewer bs - 100% agree that weight is not everything but 20Ibs!!, come on trek you can do better than that, aren’t things supposed to get lighter every year not heavier :-( Surely a pair of 32mm tyres would soak up enough road buzz that you could then bin the front and rear iso to save a chunk of weight

I ordered a 2020 SL 6 yesterday. I would say this bike is perfect for me. I'm 59. Been a recreational rider for many years. Even though not a racer I'd have sacrificed comfort for lighter weight in days gone by. But not any more. An extra pound or two on the bike is fine with me if, at the end of the day, it has been a more comfortable ride. I'm also moving away from cars, and the prospect of going to tires that would at least make gravel reasonably doable is extremely attractive. Why not buy a 2019? Frame clearance and the 2020 has a threaded bottom bracket. 32s for the road does seem wide. (I come from the 23s / 115psi days.) But from everything I've read people say they're not only comfortable but reasonably fast.
@ToddJones
@ToddJones 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the t47 is a nice touch, but if you aren’t pushing 1000 watts and sprinting the chance of you having trouble with your press fit bb is nil. And you can fit 32s on the 2019. But, for the riding you are describing and if you don’t mind the steep jump in price then the 2020 is more future proof.

Honestly this bike looks perfect for me and I bet I’m not alone. I am 38 with 2 kids. I dont have all day to ride just a few hours while the kids are at school. I am getting back into drop bar riding after taking 5 years off. I dont race, I want to ride less traveled roads and paths AWAY from cars. So for my area this means 70 percent chipped up potholed exurban roads and 30 percent well maintained gravel. I want to go fast, but I am riding for fitness and fun not competition. Trying to decide between Domane SL5, and Salsa Warroad/Warbird. Anyone have any advice or other suggestions?

Just purchased the Domane SL6 (Black on Black..this "B" is on fire!) yesterday 8/31. I'm upgrading from the Checkpoint SL 5 (Cobra Blood). I'm riding 18miles Monday thru Friday and 21 every other Saturday( 73% pavement/road - 27% gravel in that TEXAS weather - Trinity Park). The reason for the upgrade, the Cobra Blood is fast but on windy days the drag is real...the bike becomes a tank. The first mile I'm whooping tail and taking names but after 4 miles the Checkpoint SL would struggle(you have to put in to much work to keep it going). The Checkpoint SL was burying all the gravel bikes and toe tagging quite a few road bikes at the park. I will put the Domane SL6( I call the bike "KITT") to the test Monday and report back next weekend. If you're out at Trinity Park next week between 5:30 and 8:30 don't be afraid to pull up and get some of this action( look for the two dudes riding Track bikes).

@@k-mac5511 The SL6 (Kitt) is on point...Kitt is lightweight and fast! What is so crazy, the SL6 is just as fast on on gravel roads(not heavily gravel - epic fail). The SL6 made me realize how overweight I am. I have busted Specialized's, BMC and etc( left them eating my dust) but that endurance of mines is TRASH!! I'm going for losing 50 pounds by 11/1 and hopefully Kitt and calisthenics will get me there! I was going to throw some Carbon wheels on but I think I'm going to leave the SL6/Kitt original and/or the way I purchased and just get a new bike. The next one will be a Canyon Aeroad but that is a later down the road. My SL6 is holding me down right now "PLUS" I need more wins with the new goal weight!

Too right!! Been struggling with the weight of the Domane. Wanted a gravel bike here in the UK and was very impressed with the Checkpoint SL6. 40mm tyre, yes. Tubeless yes! Comfortable yes! Ready for cyclocross yes. 9.08kg. It’ll do weight wise. Summary Versatile, great handling, do anything bike including touring, gravel, cyclocross and road. Used a spare set of DT Swiss alloy rims with 30mm road tyres and can now road ride competitively too!

Thanks for such honest review. I've gotta watch it before buying my 2020 Domane SL7 eTap. I can't agree more with your review. Being a 2014 Madone 4.7 owner and wanted to upgrade to a up-to-date bike I bought the Domane which I regret of have that bike. I just rode 2 times to understand that is a TANK and full of marketing promises. My legs hurt after 10miles like I'm riding my 2020 Farley 9.6 fatbike @20mph. I never fell in love with bike, also the AXS 12 sp groupset is a bluff. Sram came up with a great wireless idea to hit Shimano Di2 but is a piece of crap system compare with the bullet proofed Di2. As of today and just with 2 rides, I'm selling my Domane to get a 2021 Emonda SL6 or SL7 if budget permiting; or perhaps, a 2020 Madone SL6. I'll add my thoughts, I guess. I bought a Domane SL5 in a size 58 (I'm 5'11"). It was just a little too big for me, and the bike felt generally sluggish overall. The shop I bought it from let me try the Emonda SL5 as well, and although I thought it was too twitchy at first, I ended up exchanging it for the Emonda in a size 56. I'm much happier now, and really loving it. Feels much quicker and responsive. There's honestly not a huge difference missing the isospeed. The carbon frame already handles the shock absorption pretty well.

Emonda is a faster, more aggressive bike! With that being said, The Domane is not slow or sluggish! If you tried a 58 and then went for a 56, you were on a ‘bigger’ bike than you should’ve been! If you had tried the 56, which was beyond me why you tried a 58 and then bought a 56, you would’ve been more comfortable to ride ‘adequately!’ With that being said, an Emonda is a more aggressive bike! A Domane is a more comfortable bike that is supposed to put you in a more ‘upright’ position. People with bad backs and those whom cannot handle being on a bike with a more aggressive stance will benefit from this bike! You can ‘race’ on this bike but that is not it’s ‘main’ intention! Technically, with all it’s parts and technology, it ‘equates’ to adding up to a ‘race-worthy’ bike! However, with it’s geometry, more relaxed head tube and lifted stem, as well as ISO speed incorporation, The Domane is meant to be an ‘all-rounder’ road-bike, versus a ‘focused’, type of a road bike! A user-friendly road bike if you will! Honestly, if you’re not a competing racer, a semi-pro or pro, why the heck would you buy a pro racing bike, anyway? It’s a waste of money and like buying a Ferrari or Porsche, where are you going to ride a bike that’s so fast? The bike was fast enough for me! I just bought a Domane SL 6 and am changing the wheels! The weight of the wheels is not the only reason to change them! The hubs and bearings in the higher end Bontrager wheels, also contribute to the smoothness and confit ability, as well as speed of the bike!

@@edwardpetersii6276 Inventory was still low when I was shopping. Trek’s sizing guide put me on a 58, and I found one in stock at a shop an hour away. After riding it for a week, I realized a 56 would feel better. They didn’t have a Domane in 56 in stock, so Emonda ended up being a better option for me in multiple levels.

I have lower back problems (20 years of flying in the Navy). The Domane is the first bike that I can ride on a regular basis. I have ridden a few other endurance road bikes and owned a giant defy prior to my 2021 Domane SL6. Those other bikes are comfortable also but do not compare to what the ISO speed provides. On my Defy, I could go on a 60-mile ride and be ok, but my lower back would be stiff and in pain after the ride and the next day. I could ride my Domane every day if I had the time. So I'm ok with the weight if I can ride it more.

I also have a Domane SL6 and I love it. I bought it because of the geo. There are not many bikes out there which fit to long leg / short reach / short arms riders. With 177cm I have a size 54, seatpost to max and no spacers beneath the stem. I changed to a different and lighter saddle, swapped the handlebar to one with less reach (93mm on the existing is way too much) and changed tubes. With these changes I instantly shaved off almost 0,5kg. I will also change to summer tires, maybe Hunt wheels, and this will drop another 0,7kg in weight resulting in overall approx. 8kg for this bike. Perfect.

After riding Madone's for my past two road bikes, I felt it was time to move into the Domane (plus I just turned 60 a few months ago so Mister Ray, your comments are right on!!!) and wanted something that wouldn't loosen my fillings when I hit a bump. Yes, this bike is significantly heavier than my 2013 Madone (shockingly FIVE POUNDS heavier), but I describe it as moving from a Corvette to a Cadillac. My first ride with it felt significantly slower (as I didn't hook up my computer yet) but to my surprise, I came in 2/10th a MPH slower than my normal ride. I will sacrifice that marginal speed for the added comfort any day. Plus I love the spare tube storage and the Flare RT light on the back. What a nice upgrade.

I rode twice by myself and showed improvement in my time, hill climb, and average pace from 12 to now 14. The other times have been at the pace of the group with multiple stops. For me, I wanted the checkpoint. However, the bb90 bb was not something I was excited about, nor was the lack of front compliance (regardless of tire size). The new t27 bb along with front iso, and the ability to add 38c, makes this a really great platform for a "do it all" bike. Also the color selection is far better on this trim level. When the checkpoint has the new t27 bb and front iso it will be more of a close call (checkpoint for sure then). But for now... This is the better deal imo.

Checkpoint is an adventure bike. Gravel is now more competitive. I think the Domane is a true competition gravel bike now that you can put 40's on it if you thought you needed it.

I still think I'd want a longer bike with gravel geometry tho. I do get what you are saying and i've thought the same thing. I was originally disappointed that the Checkpoint when it was launched wasn't a competition type race bike. But I don't think this is the answer. I wish they would launch a new Checkpoint with less braise ons in maybe a PRO model for more gravel racing. You never know, maybe a new one with a T47 BB is in the works.

Rambling with similar thoughts lately. Thinking about changing my 2016 Boone to get 12mm through axles on all my bikes for easy wheel change. It seems like the best low cost versatile frame in Trek's line up is the Crockett. You won't be able to fit as wide tires as on the checkpoint but the frame seems much more optimize in terms of weight and performance. That seems like a bike that would be very capable on road and off road with better perfmance than the domane and checkpoint.

I have my 2018 Domane SL6 Pro with the Aeolus 3 carbon wheels since July 2018. I’m loving every minute, every mile, and I ride it daily. I ride with a lot of wattage, at a body weight between 220-240 lbs., and my Emonda has endured it all, masterfully! Not too keen on the new cosmetic changes for 2020, though. I'm thinking of getting a endurance bike like Domane SL5 or SL6 for long ride like trip for 100 miles or above, as i did have Giant TCR Advanced 1 KOM 3 years back but i still prefer to ride on my Specialized FS Elite Worldcup as it is more comfortable and sold off my Giant after less than 10 rides....I also consider to have Checkpoint so that i can ride on gravel or use it as touring bike since Checkpoint has lot of place to mount rack... then i still think the best bike for off road will be my FS... it is really a hard decision for me to go for.... For now I'm using my FS to ride with my friend for 100 miles trip but it is hard for me to keep up with long trip with the fat tyre, bike geometry and the weight, thus wanting to have a more comfortable ride so that i can ride faster, longer, and enjoy the ride without having back/shoulder ache...

Great video, It answered a lot of questions comparing with the checkpoint. I would totally buy this bike except there's no mounts for a rack or other accessories. To me it could if been an ultimate light touring set up or ulta event bike. Re the weight I found it was all in my head, I tested 2 bikes with 4lbs difference, mere seconds over a 10min climb. One bike that's overlooked and affordable is the crossrip, which they offer as a frame, accepts wide tires, racks, packs and regular axle wheels. Owning a set of high end non thur axle compatible wheels it was a great choice.

I ride roads that in general are pretty rough when running 25mm tires. First ride on my 2020 SL6 I PR'd four climbs and my everyday road bike is a 17 pounds Vamoots. I was a bit disappointed it didn't come with tubeless ready tires so my ride was after pulling the tires, tubes and strips then replacing them with Stans tape, 2oz of sealant and a set of file tread Gravel King 32mm tires. Replacing the tires and tubes was a 400+ gram rotational savings alone.

The Stock tire with tube would be about 555 each (150 g per tube and 405 g per tire). Gravel King 32s are sub 300 grams, an actual road tire. basically you were comparing apples to oranges. Guessing the carbon wheels while significantly more pimp are really not all that light so weight was basically a wash.

I ordered a SL 5 2020 immediately when it was released. Before I've had a Canyon Endurace CF SL Disc 7.0 which is kinda of the same bike, but I wanted a bike with more tire clearance. Why did I choose the new Domane? Well, I got a really good deal because of a good relationship with my lbs. I want this bike to be somewhat capable during our weekly full-gas club rides. And I want it to handle gravel. But I also want it to be a good road bike for solo rides/adventures. Speed is fun so if it is marginally more aero, what is not to love? A few bikes ago weight was really imortant to me too. But then I got a slightly heavier aero bike, and then the Endurace and then I realized that weight is not important. At least not *that* important. I dont race on the road and we have no mountains so it doesnt matter if it is 8.5 kg or 7.5. That said, the SL 5 IS kinda heavy. But I bought new wheels (Hunt 4 season disc), saddle (Power Expert), lighter rotors, 11-28 cassette, new R3 TLR tires, new handlebars and I will remove the crankset and front derailleur to make it 1x with my Rotor 3d24+NgEco+AB Oval. This is pretty much half of the bike upgraded but it didn't cost me a lot and I will get the weight down to around 8.5 wo pedals. Not light, not for climbing maybe, but a really good allrounder. I haven't ridden one but just wanted to share my 2 cents. On paper this is imho a perfect bike for a lot of people!

As for the weight - I am between 90 and 115kg heavy, depending on how close the Ironman race is ;) , so have one kilo more in the frame I do not care. If I road more gravel than road I think the checkpoint is it but to me the geometry of the domane fit me better and because I ride primarily tarmac but I can also do gravel when I want to . I think the domane with a 35-38mm tire is about as versatile bike as it gets. But the checkpoint can do the same lol . So really whichever you like more . I think between the 2 if you ride mostly road get the domane , of you rode mostly gravel and need a 40mm-45mm tire get the checkpoint. But to me with mostly road and the fact that even when I ride gravel its light gravel i couldnt see needing bigger than a 38mm tire ever . If i need bigger i take my fuel ex8

What we want is more comfort, lightness, sexy, practicality, more sexy, more comfort, and then aero. Notice that weight is not on the list, since most of us have taken care of this using our own well design "hidden" storage repositories. In summary, why pay more to get less!! Very true, although the these schwalbe G-one's are actually pretty light. I was expecting the same weight savings as a mountain bike tubeless setup, but I wasn't thinking straight, obviously. as for the geometry, the Domane has a taller slacker geometry yet the Checkpoint feels more stable and confident. and comfort and ride position in my opinion are a result of a good fitting. The feeling of how the bike handles is the result of the geometry. The Domane seems like it would be more stable but I found the checkpoint to be. That said, The Domane is a great handling bike, and I quite enjoyed my last one too. There is no firm line between the two bikes, both are great, thats why I find it so tough to figure out how to separate the differences. Thanks for your input.

Hey there - thanks so much for your review. I have just bought a Domane SL6 - and love it though it does seem to ride like a Volvo. Is this a problem? I don't know yet... at first I'd been thinking about the Edmonda. But perhaps I didn't need anything quite so punchy. I do long-ish hilly rides and though I don't do gravel, there are some pretty choppy sections of roads on my usual routes which it handles really well. I am wondering whether the 32mm tyres slow things down a bit plus the weight (!!) was surprising - it weighs the same as my 10 year old CAAD 10! It does seem to transfer power much much better though which makes up for the weight so hills and everything else feel a little easier and I'm certainly less tired from the road buzz after long rides. Overall, I'm pretty happy. However, I'm thinking of switching to narrower tyres. What are your thoughts on that?
@ToddJones
@ToddJones 4 жыл бұрын
Narrower bars seem to be the trend, I switched to 40cm on my Emonda. Feels fine but hacebnt notice too much of a difference. If you can handle 28mm did tires they would feel faster. But if your roads are really bumpy then stick with the 32s. I think the Domane is a great bike and I’m considering switching back to it from my Emonda.

I looked at the Specialized Roubaix but trek has compliance between the frame and the person only (seat and handle bar iso speed) but still kept it solid stiff between the pedals and the frame making energy transfer to the road efficiently. I also had a Canondale Synapse, it rides smooth as well (squeaks here and there when pushed) but it was always 1 mph slower than the Domane, so I sold the Canondale as it was not stiff enough at the energy transfer places.

So one reason I am looking at it is for the SL 7 etap version which weighs 19.3. I am primarily road and currently have a TCR but looking to go more relaxed geometry. Why should the Domane not interest me? Even for the SL6, the 2019 is not that much cheaper than 2020 unless you can find a good deal.

@ToddJones 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kurt, if I were to buy a Domane I would go for the SL7 also. The SL6 is on close out from Trek, and they have lots of stock, but you are right, it’s only $600 less. I’m guessing you could get $1000 off if you are lucky. From a pure road bike perspective, I would still go with the 19 SL6. But they don’t make that SL7 with AXS in last years model, so there yah go. I am curious as to the riding you’ll be doing? And have you had a good fitting? What is making you look for a more relaxed geometry? Of course it’s a way different bike than the TCT, but not many are that long and low.

@@ToddJones Thanks for the response. May come down to budget. I've had the TCR for nearly 10 years and like it but now am doing less racing and more 50-60 mile group rides. I moved to 25" tires but still it's a fairly harsh ride. Plus getting older so comfort is more of an issue. So having a more relaxed geometry, compliant ride at least for everyday is attractive. Plus the extra pound or two is not necessarily bad for training especially if it improves comfort. I did get a fitting but long ago a couple of years after purchase. I will likely keep the TCR around for the occasional races. Open to suggestions though.
@ToddJones
@ToddJones 5 жыл бұрын
So I could talk all day long about weight, and honestly weight isn’t that important. If you are going to try and save weight, saving it on the wheel set is far more advantageous than the frame. The thing about fittings is that your ideal position won’t change regardless of the bike, you’ll just choose the right frame size to suit your fit position in its most ideal form. The geometry being more upright really means nothing as you could just frame size down to get a more aggressive drop. So the geometry being an endurance geometry is what provides a bit more confident and stable feel, which I think is what you are after. And in terms of the best option for you. If you are after AXS than this years Domane is at the top of the list. If you potentially might ride gravel then the checkpoint SL7 would be a great option that can also handle road... there are just so many options now that I get confused about it.

Just wanted to add a comment about the weight. I just spent a week riding in the hills of Spain on a 2019 Domane SL6 - weight 19.07 pounds according to the website (granted not the 2020 model but equivalent to the SL7 I am looking at). Averaged 5,000 to 6,000 feet of climbing per day and I never felt "held back" by the weight of the bike. Sure, the Emonda would be lighter in the hills and yes I might want a Madone or Emonda if I was racing but after finishing 50 or 60 miles of solo riding each day even with 6,000 ft of elevation gain, I was glad to have the comfort that the Domane offered and would gladly trade that for the extra 2 pounds in weight penalty. Checkpoint is an Adventure or Gravel bike! A Domane is a ‘comfort’ road bike! I rode road bikes for years! They’re not the most comfortable! You’re in a bent over position and pedaling for hours, at varying speeds! You’re stopping and going, again, in a bent-over position! You know how ‘bad’ for your back that is! Bike simulations and real riding are two completely different things! I only say this because people in the gyms, in spin-classes and on trainers think it’s the same thing! It isn’t! When you’re on the road, bumps, potholes, avoiding cars, people, etc. It all takes a toll on your body! The Domane has the ISO Speed, incorporated, a higher head tube and upwardly angled stem height. The bike is made to be more cushiony! So, it feels, ‘less’ fast! Also, a Checkpoint has a lower, down-tube, protector for riding on gravel and again, two completely different bikes! Why you are comparing the two is beyond me! The Checkpoint is like an off-road road bike, while the Domane is made for people who ‘cannot’ ride a ‘race’ specific road bike, for longer distances and periods! People with physical problems, arthritis, bad backs, neck problems, etc. The jarring and abuse that a super-quick, light, race-ready bike can cause to a person’s body isn’t for everyone! I’m 52, worked in construction for 30 years and am not as ‘physically’ capable as perhaps, 20 years ago!? I want a nice, comfy road bike that when I feel able, I can go a little faster and ride a little more ‘aggressively!’ Period! If you don’t get that, I don’t know why you’re researching so much! After some research, you ought to be finding out some answers! I think some of you are trying to see something that isn’t there! I know FOR A FACT that neither the Emonda or Madone are for me! I cannot even sit on them comfortably! The Domane, what a great bike! I jumped on one for a test ride a week ago, rode 3 miles, spiritedly, with my casual clothes on and just a helmet, as I was all smiles and no back pain when I arrived back at The Trek store in NYC! You have to choose the bike that’s right for you! Forget about what Trek writes about these bikes! It’s advertising! You have to try and ride them!

Thanks mate, tough choice and will depend on terrain. If primarily on road then I’d go for the Domane. I did love my Checkpoint tho and will be buying another one eventually.

Great videos mate. I’d like your opinion. I enjoy long days in the saddle but I also love a challenging climb. Comfort is very important to me but so is a lightweight bike. Any recommendations on how to balance these two? Domane all the way? Or can Emonda be tailored to be an endurance bike as well as climbing?
@ToddJones
@ToddJones 4 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, the Emonda is not built for comfort at all. Aggressive geometry and pretty stiff. It is very fast ok smooth roads but on rough roads or if you prefer an upright position I would go Domane all the way. My next bike will be a Domane as I find myself putting on longer slower miles these days.

Great vid, I totally agree with you on the Domane. Also, 20 lbs is heavy in any road/gravel bike. Heavier weight means more exertion period, so you can’t travel further.

I find it funny when people complain over 1 or 2 lbs on a bike ...if u loose 2 lbs and boom all of a suden its lighter. A 240lbs guy on a 17lbs bike will not move faster than a 180lbs guy on a 20lbs bike lol

Built my 2020 Domane SLR with optional Pro Endurance geometry specifically for gravel racing. 54mm between forks and stays. Fits 42c no problem. Pro geometry perfect for gravel, low offset fork, low BB, shorter CS, longer TT, slightly steeper angles than standard. I think the SLR might have more tire clearance than standard, not sure. Google "2020 domane gravel build" to see my build.

Checkpoint over Domane it’s more versatile plus I ride emonda if it’s purely road. The Domane is a void all of its own it’s geared more for road riders who want to ride a wider tire in winter with mudguards? Thinking about that they may as well buy a checkpoint? I bought checkpoint to get rid of my super fly which was mainly used on canal towpaths. I still have a fuel if I want to go MTB riding.

I have an SL4 that I bought last year (the only 58cm Domane I could find in the UK last June) with the Tiagra swapped out for 105 (mechs) and Ultegra (cassette and brakes), but the change that has made the greatest difference is swapping the 2.1kgBontrager Affinity wheels with tubes for Hunt Aero 50 carbon wheels (sub-1.5kg) and Challenge Strada Bianca tubeless tyres. The bike is now under 9kg (just) and even more comfortable. It's a joy to ride.

hello LOB aka Mr. skittles (that was a good one) - it's fairly flat where I live and depending on the wind conditions on any day I can go road or gravel. I've been leaning towards the checkpoint as it seems a purpose build gravel that can go road. whereas the Domane seems like a road endurance bike that can go gravel. 1) is that a fair statement..? cause, I'm a bit stuck. priority is comfort and handling. 2) if I go checkpoint do I sacrifice much when I hit the road..? 3) also, I have no experience with a 1x11 and assuming I should go for the 50/34 option to road days - but curious your thoughts. you sort of answered the question in your stream of consciousness at the end but your specific feedback is appreciated.
@ToddJones
@ToddJones 4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Brakohiapa hey Joseph, thanks for the question. If you had to pick between the two I would weigh how much road vs gravel, and what type of roads/gravel. If the roads are super smooth and the gravel is packed, I’d go Domane, it is an amazing bike that is extremely capable. I just rode with my uncle who has an SLR and he kicked my butt up every climb. So the bike can climb too. If the roads are pitted then riding a wider tire like a 28 or 32 is just as fast and way more comfortable, so really either bike, but riding loose/rougher gravel the Checkpoint may be the one to go with. If you find you need 28mm tires then that is better suited for the road (Domane) bike, as running 28’s on the Checkpoint is fine but not ideal. In the end I think you can see how I find it hard to reason through this decision, and ultimately I’d recommend trying both before you buy. You can’t really go wrong with either.

"If it is just road and you want a comfortable road bike, gran fondo bike, a bike that can handle a wire tire then honestly buy last year Demone. It's probably on sales and it's phenomenal bike and it's lighter" I was struggling to decide either buying a used 2018 Demone SLR frame and build according to my liking and budget or a brand new 2020 Demone SL6. The above conclusion pretty much sums it up and I am going to call the seller for now (hopefully still available) cause that's exactly my intention of swapping my caliber Cervelo R5 for the disc Domane. Thanks!

I am interested in a new Domane but I'm curious on your reason to get last year's model. There is still a 2019 SL6 at my LBS. Between the two, the geometry is the same with some visual differences probably from the aero "upgrades". Also the 2020/2021 has the larger downtube with the internal storage. Those are probably what contributed to the weight gain, but I'm guessing the rest is the same. The newer one has the internal storage, can fit wider tires, cleaner internal wiring, and T47 BB. Even though the 2109 is about the same price as a new SL5, I've been reading stay away from the BB90 like the plague even though it has an Ultegra groupset.
@ToddJones
@ToddJones 4 жыл бұрын
My reasoning for staying with the old frame and not feeling the need to upgrade is based on the older frame being lighter, costing a lot less and still being an amazing road bike. My rational is that if you are using it for road riding and don’t plan to venture into gravel then the older model is still amazing and can be had at a great price. The new model is fantastic tho, so which ever one you end up with you’ll be very happy. And yes visually the bike has changed, it does get aero styling and wider tire clearance. So it will come down to your riding preference. Ultimately if you do go with the older model and ride mostly toad you aren’t missing out too much...

@philweezer4763 4 жыл бұрын
@@ToddJones Fair points. I would've bought the 2019 already but reading how (universally) bad the BB90 is, made me stop and hesitate. I know there is nothing wrong with press-fit BB's and its more of the manufacturer's tolerances. But if I'm spending that kind of money, I don't want to deal with known problems. I know Trek's warranty is pretty good, but you never know unless you have to go through it. I'm still thinking it over, maybe too much...
@ToddJones

So if you go to your LBS is it a requirement that your rep own and ride every single bike in the shop? Probably not. Point being... one doesn't need to own or ride the bike to know things like, geometry, weight, aerodynamics... etc... to recommend it to a specific rider.

I got the previous model SLR6 for half the price of the new SLR6, couldn’t be happier with it. I think it’s internal cable routing into the down tube looks better than the new bike’s going into the top tube too. The new prices are just ridiculous. You could buy a decent motorbike for the same price.
