Those tractors are very fun to drive with the gear changer at you're nut's, just be careful of your surroundings, and be mindful of the big wheels :) Clutch on the Left Break on the Right... Throttle is on the steering wheel... Hold the left foot clutch down and break to stop and/or change gears. You're welcome :)

I'm kind of surprised he could double the torque or more and have the trans and rear end survive in that tractor. The 9-2-8Ns were not known for being over built as far as the drive train was concerned. I did notice he kept the tire width conservative, maybe to let the tires spin before putting major stress on the drive train. As for how strong these tractors were verses other tractors of the era:Ford was working against a different philosophy than other makers. He viewed these tractors as the first tractor farmers could afford to replace a team of horses. The tractors were made light enough to be stored in barns, but had enough power to handle the same size equipment a farmer replacing horses would already own. It is hard to believe now, but draft animals were still a significant part of most small farms in1939 when these came out.
@thegreenerthemeaner3 жыл бұрын
You correct to the point of using the horse drawn equipment. For heavy draft work, they needed 3 point equipment. Pulling horse drawn with a tractor took 2 people. Some horse equipment was modified at the local blacksmith. Most like my Grandfather bought the whole implement lineup and didn't waste time. Bought other things that the horses didn't do like a sheller, a buzz saw, a rear blade. Any mechanization was a leap forward. Some more than others.

That tractor is still working hard for it's owner and doing a great job of it too. I wanted to get a new Ford tractor when I was in the Air Force, and plow the soil and plant vegetables, but by the time I got out and moved back home the only brand which was sold in my area was the John Deere brand so I purchased one of them. I got another one from the same dealer last year and love them both. I learned how to drive a tractor in 1965 on a Massey Ferguson who belonged to a family I was working for as a teen.

2 N' and 9N's are supposed to be painted all Gray. The differences are a 8N has both brake pedals on the same side, plus 4 forward gears, and the wheels are different. Also, the 8N' don't have a Ferguson Lift. The lift arms look like the metal is thinner. I think the steering arms are different too.

At those speeds and on flat ground it all looks pretty safe to me. Push in the clutch or shut off the key...everything comes to a stop. That kid will remember that for the rest of his life and it will shape the man he becomes in this world. Good job Grandpa!

It looks worse than it is. My father put us all on the tractor as young children. Story has it I used to fall asleep as an infant riding on our 52 8n while cutting grass with a sickle bar mower.

Exactly! That kid will be hooked on tractors and will want one just like it now! Having ridden on the fender of a tractor for many years of my young life, this looks so safe OSHA would approve! Heck motorcycles are more dangerous than this could ever dream of being!!

nice to see these old fords still doing work and glad to see the little one riding along. When I was a kid I used to ride with my grandfather while he worked his small farm and also skidded logs. I think its some part of a normal American childhood to ride on an old ford when you're little. I used to sit on the hood though with one leg on either side. I'd bet the safety police would be all over that today

Nice! We love these good ol' tractors! Me and my husband recently bought our 2nd n-series tractor. First is our 9n which is dedicated with a Dearborn/Danuser posthole digger and 2nd is our 8n that we are using as the work horse for plowing, forklift, Dearborn 10-6 scoop, and whatever other attachments we can use but I wanted to ask if you use rear stabilizers for the 3-pt arms when you plow... we noticed our plow will shift side-to-side and will also lean to one side when the plow is raised up and we're on a slight slope and so making it a little more difficult getting the plow right where it should be when lowering it to the ground.
@hlyautey8 жыл бұрын
I do use the stabilizer arms on my plow because of the same issues. I do try to plow straight even if I'm starting out on a slope.

I have a quick question I have a Ford 2N 1943 tractor I just got. I was disking with it today, and it will not lift the disk its the same size as the one you are using, and it would not lift it. I saw place's were it can lift up to 800 LB and 1200 LB with a front weight. yet this will not lift it. now if I put the level in the up position it will try but will not lift but if I and a friend I have pull up on the disk it will go up and stay up. Can that be the PUMP. If so please let me know if you have any idea of what it could be so I can get her fixed up right. Thanks in advance.

Nice tractor & plow. The plow should be leveled though. The back moldboard is plowing way deeper than the front and it's leaving ridges causing it to not cover well on the front while the back has dirt coming up over top of the moldboard and falling into the furrow.

safety--- never disk with someone riding much less a small child!!!
@calebwilson48544 жыл бұрын
Agreed! That's a huge safety risk.
@852urkl4 жыл бұрын
Hardly a safety risk. The kid isn't going to fall off, they aren't running at high speeds and he's taking his time. You take greater risks than them everytime you hop on a motorcycle frankly. And people have two riders on motorcycles all the time.... I've ridden on the fender and steps of tractors and equipment my whole life, as well as driven with people on the fender and steps.NEVER once did I ever have a moment where I thought I or the person riding was in trouble. It's all about being smart and aware of the situation, if you do somethings stupid or they do something stupid, of course trouble will happen.
