Did I hear you say it was a quick trip! I would think you had to fight hard. But you can clearly see that you know your stuff. The Canadians' landing on Juno was spread over two sectors and a total of 5 beach sections. General for Juno Beach: Bad weather from the start caused problems for the Canadians and delayed the operation. The engineer troops had some major problems in blowing up obstacles and mine traps off the coast to their full extent. The amphibious Sherman tanks (DD tanks), especially in sector MIKE, were delayed and the infantry landed before the tanks. Add to this that both the aerial and naval bombardment was horribly imprecise. The infantrymen in the first waves were therefore met in several places by extremely combat-ready Germans in undamaged defensive positions. Juno Beach became the one of the British landing areas that presented the invasion force with the greatest problems. Casualties in the first attack waves were roughly as high as at Omaha Beach. The difference between Juno and Omaha was that the Canadians broke more quickly through the German coastal defenses and onto relatively open ground. Battle Map #14 takes its starting point in the NAN White sector at Bernieres-sur-Mer, where infantrymen from the Queens Own Rifles 2 assault companies were to attack almost straight into strongpoint WN28. H hour was delayed by 10 minutes to 0755. Enough for the tide to rise and narrow the beach with a tendency for men and machinery to pile up on the beach. The AVRE units arrived on the beach at the same time as the infantry. Despite difficulties, it was possible to build a bridge over the coastal wall and to lay fascines in several armored trenches. AVRE tanks with Petard mortars also came into use against concrete obstacles and Sherman Crabs cleared minefields. At 0830 the battalion's follow-up companies landed and they began moving through the town. Hot on their heels was the 8th Brigade's reserve battalion, Le Régiment de la Chaudière, which, together with a squadron of Sherman tanks from Fort Garry House, began the advance towards Beny-sur-Mer. If you visit Bernieres-sur-Mer, there are many reminders of the battle. Among other things, what is today called The Canadien House right out on the beach. The house was heavily fortified and there was a fierce battle over the house.

Hi, thank you for your helpful video with respect to this game. Could you please clarify when you roll to indicate whether there is combat on a particular day? You first mention this when discussing the Combat Calendar Code (13:48) stating a roll of 3 or less is required on day one. Later in the video (36:50), you roll to determine whether combat occurs - stating that you require an 8+. This takes into consideration sector modifiers, which makes sense, but I’m confused as to which roll is to be used. What is the purpose of the Combat Calendar Code number if it is not used to determine if combat occurs?! Thank you.
@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel
@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel 10 күн бұрын
@@ven08om Hi! I made more videos of this game, looking at them might help to get a better grasp of the rules. The combat calendar roll is different than the roll to see if combat occurs in a specific area during a day of combat. So with the calendar we have different dates reflecting the actual historical combat situations of this armored division. We have different kinds of scenarios (advance, defence etc) and different odds of gaining combat. If combat is not triggered, we simply roll for the next date. If it is triggered, combat during this day occurs and we play this scenario. Rolling for combat on the movement map is different. First we apply all necessary modifiers. If combat does not occur, we captured the area, gain VP and look for resistance in an adjacent area. But if combat occurs, that is what triggers actual combat on the combat board! Does that make sense?
@ven08om
@ven08om 10 күн бұрын
@@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel Hi thanks for your reply and explanation. So from what I understand, the combat calendar roll is only made once per day and if it fails to trigger combat, then nothing occurs on the movement map and we go to the next day, where the process is repeated for the new day. However, rolling for combat on the movement map may occur multiple times per day (every time we move into a new sector as we move towards our exit sector) and if no combat occurs, we simply move into the captured area and begin the process again!? Have I got this correct? Once again - thank you for your help!

Impressive playthrough. As usual, you do a good job of explaining and commenting along the way. I think I've figured out some of your basic tactics: get the corporal, the captain, the drill seargent, the medic and the lieutenant. And the bangalore and the flamethrower. Looking forward to your game with all modules in play... wow 😵‍💫 Regarding your comment about the landing boats being hit by random shelling during their approach towards the coast. I actually think it fits well with the actual situation the boats were in. The course was given, there was only one way in. The effect of the German shelling and obstacles I judge to have the character of chance. Some made it, others didn't. And there wasn't much they could do about it. The actual situation at Utah Beach in brief: Behind the coast, the Germans had flooded a large area, and progress away from the beach could only be made along 4 narrow dike roads. Units from the 101st Airborne Division were tasked with quickly gaining control of the dike roads during the night. If this did not happen, the 4th Division risked being trapped on the beach. Note: Somewhat unusually, an American general was in the first attack wave. It was General Theodore Roosevelt Jr., a cousin of President Roosevelt. During the approach to the coast, problems arose because 3 of the 4 patrol boats, which on each flank had to direct the landing force into the right place, encountered mines or suffered other defects. This led to confusion in the formation and the result was that the entire formation steered towards Utah a few kilometers further south than planned - specifically towards La Madeleine and dike road no. 2, where Lieutenant Jahnke and his people in strongpoint W5 tried to assemble to resistance after a violent bombardment. The attack on Utah Beach apparently went according to plan. The first attack waves had landed, and 28 out of 32 amphibious tanks had made it in unharmed. Very quickly, the German defenders in fortification W5 were defeated, and the first troops could prepare to move into the country. It was then that General Roosevelt discovered or was informed that the landing had been made in the wrong place. After conferring with his battalion commanders, he is said to have uttered the famous words: "We'll start the war from here!" Later in the morning there was contact with the American paratroopers and the battle for Utah Beach was thus decided.

haha you figured out my tactic! Well it's a solid one, but when you start to introduce the different modules, you have to adapt to the situation and the tactic might not hold. That is what I like about the modules, they create a more fluid situation that the player have to adapt to. I agree with your comment regarding the sea phase, but it is still frustrating although realistic xD Thank you so much for the informative history on Utah! I'll admit that I do not know much of it, as you tend to read more about Omaha and it's different sectors. Cheers mate!
@Pegasus6-6-44
@Pegasus6-6-44 11 күн бұрын
Yes, unfortunately the American narrative of Omaha Beach is far too dominant in the story of D-Day (just think of Saving Private Ryan - a good film, yes, but it must not stand alone). And yes, the landing at Omaha went somewhat wrong from the start. And yes, the Americans suffered terrible losses. But that does not change the fact that the German defense would break in any case. The defense was without depth and without real reserves. The attrition of the defense and thus defeat was inevitable. Take, for example, the Canadians at Juno Beach. They met considerable resistance and casualty rates close to those of the Americans at Omaha. But their story is almost forgotten. And the English on Gold Beach. They reached very far inland on D-Day. English patrols were near Bayeux. Something of achievement. So sometimes the story of D-Day needs to unfold more than just being about Omaha.

Congrats on taking down another bunker! I've been tempted to play this solo controlling two units just to see how that plays, but I definitely wouldn't do that if I was recording it. I also consider the expansion modules to be mix-and-match rather than something I want to play all at once. By using the default game with only a couple of modules at a time, I can make each game feel completely different. I also do this with AiYP. Emmanuel Aquin is a master at designing game variants. Have you ever been tempted to calculate your score in this game? I remember doing that once. I don't play enough to make that effort worthwhile. Hi Daniel. Once again: a nice play through. You explain things thoroughly. This battle map gives a good impression of the actual attack on Pegasus Bridge on D-Day 6 June 1944. The attack was a "coup de main" - a swift attack that relies on speed and surprise to accomplish its objectives in a single blow. 3 platoons from a reinforced (with engineer soldiers) company of airborne troops were 00.16 landed with 3 gliders only 30-50m from the bridge. The first troops were to knock out a small gun emplacement and trenches by the bridge and then charge over the bridge and knock out the enemy positions there. It was all over in about 15 minutes, after which the engineer soldiers could remove the prepared explosive charges (which, by the way, were not prepared at all). Later that night, the company received reinforcements from soldiers dropped by parachute east of the bridge. By noon on D-Day, reinforcements arrived from Sword Beach. Lieutenant Den Brotheridge became the first Allied soldier killed in action on D-Day when he led his platoon over the bridge towards Cafe Gondree. He is buried in the Ranville Civil Cemetery. Cafe Gondree next to the bridge became the first liberated French house. The owner had hidden champagne bottles buried in the garden, which were brought out that day to celebrate the liberation with the liberators. The cafe became a regular meeting place for the veterans of the battle after the war. The battle map with its barriers and minefields shows the problems for the English soldiers. And after defeating the bunker, the bridge must also be captured. The rule A few good men shows the airborne troops' reduced possibilities for reinforcements.
