By "shelf thing" you mean one of the orange blocks? Yes, you have to push onward. It has to do at least half a circle.

Rereading your manual it seems that it was aimed at speed and reducing time on the first bolt.

Correct. Instead of securing the maillon rapide (which takes time that you are supposed to spend climbing), you just clip the triple-action steel carabiner and that's it; it's critical, though, that it's Z359.12 ANSI, which means that the gate is bombproof.

There is no way without abandoning gear and retrieving it later if you downclimb the whole thing.

I only do sport. My thought was cleaning gear on the raps to the ground. Use a single carabiner on hangars since rope drag isn’t a concern, and using a clove hitched carabiner block at the anchor of each pitch, and the dead end of the rope tied to the blocked side of the live rope to use as a tag line. 🤔 I think it could work as long as the pitches are less than half your rope length. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, that's a method described in Andy Kirkpatrick's "Me, Myself & I", with some variations.
