Certainly a good portion of my moral foundation is based in Xian ideals, but Sending 95% of people to hell is one of my main moral objection to getting baptized as an adult. We cannot be spreading false doctrine without proper knowledge of the scriptures, the lake of fire is a symbol of eternal destruction. It is the same as Gehenna, but it is different from hell, which is the common grave of mankind. Not a literal lake The five Bible verses that mention “the lake of fire” show it to be a symbol rather than a literal lake. I mean this with sincerity and humility and I’m willing to be corrected. I so desperately want what you’re saying to be true about Jesus being the Saviour of THE WORLD, not a few who find the “oh so difficult” narrow road. It has always seemed to me like I have to “work out” my salvation, whereas Jesus saves me but I have to still work it out (whatever that means). I want to fully trust the saving arms of Christ, not my own fleeting and weak lack of faith. I believe that it is Christ’s faith that rises up in me, for I don’t have enough, but he gives it to me as a gift. So my question is, if everyone gets saved, why preach the gospel? And how are we to understand God avenging us who have been hurt in atrocious ways? How are we to understand his wrath? Again I ask this in humility, and I’m not attacking in my tone. At any rate, if you A) believe that every human is made in the image of God, and B) believe in eternal torment in hell, then you believe that a lot of God's image goes to hell. I think the confidence on either side of this argument is misplaced. It just seems hazy in the early days of the Church on this subject. True, some of the biggest early figures were universalists (Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory Nazianzus) but many of the other figures are just difficult to pin down. Augustine basically takes over though and solidifies the "orthodox" opinion of eternal conscious torment. Does that mean we all have to believe his "massa damnata" idea? No, but I think for Catholics at least, we have to believe eternal separation is possible and that choosing evil over good could have permanent consequences. Is it likely that a loving God will send any rational creature away forever to be tormented? Let's let Him be the judge and trust in His goodness.

No they were not universal reconciliationists. I have personally read them over and over and over and over and over and over. They also did not preach unending torture or the death of the soul at physical death and they did not preach that Jesus came to save us from GOD the Father because He has rules and a bad temper and needs blood to be satisfied and appeased. They also did not preach that payment for sins is received by Him. What they do teach is this. 1. Adam transgressed the law and brought physical death 2. All men will eventually sin because we have natural lusts and we are born weak not sinful and there are demons in the world that make things worse. 3. They Teach that Jesus came to die and have His blood spilled that He could fertilize the ground with His immortality and cause the resurrection of all those seeds of Adam buried in the earth. 4. He rose again to give us hope that we will rise again because He Himself conquered the death that had no claim on Him because He was a sinless sin offering. 5 They teach that Jesus was handed over to the kingdoms of men first Israel and then Rome and Satan and that GOD delivered Him up to be murdered. They therefore teach as Isaiah also said "by injustice His life was taken away" 6. They teach that though Adam Died Justly Jesus died UNJUSTLY and in this manner GOD is just to raise all those who justly died for sins. 7. They teach therefore that the Death and resurrection has a universal effect, in that all are raised, and the particular effect, that only some will receive immortality, those who repent and have sins washed away in the blood, while others who's sins are not washed away will be justly punished and annihilated.

I consider myself a fundamentalist Christian. But defined as the bible being my foundation of truth. Not tradition. I was raised to believe in eternal conscious torment for the lost. But, now I believe in annihilation of the lost in the lake of fire. So, either you have eternal life, or you will be dead forever. Not just the body, but the soul. This is where I am today from studying scripture. It is sad that my Christian friends won't even consider these arguments because they are so locked into tradition and a few 'proof' texts. But from Genesis to Revelation, the gemeral message is the punishment for sin is death. Don't fear man who can kill the body, but fear God who can destroy both body and soul in Gahenna. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life! As for this view that there is still restoration after death, I am open to it. I don't see any clear indication that there is a deadline.

Guys please also check out John Crowder and C. Baxter Kruger, to get a solid understanding of theology to anchor yourselves in, to see this all through, because it can be easy (it happened to me) to deconstruct from religion and throw out Jesus with the bathwater. Please be aware that our God is not only love, but our God is also a consuming fire. Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire. 1Co 6:9 Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 1Co 6:10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1Co 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
