vivid/stasis also has this system that I can totally work around, with some adjustments and a bonus point system. For a game that's rather free and accessible (other than k-shoot,) it does its job well. It takes the top 20 songs that fit the player's chart range, timing IS also important, it has the stats and, well, you get those delicious currencies. You could have one to five misses and you'd still be getting an [A+] to [S] at bare minimum, which also leads to motivation. I'm just glad some rhythm games are taking this into account, and hopefully we could see this being done more in future, rhythm games. Also, the letter grading is just so convenient to have.

I like the scoring system of Rotaeno, personally. The max score is 1,010,000 (All Perfect +), but you can get EX rank at 1M score and you don't even need to AP or FC if you have good enough accuracy. It also has a rating system and it really encourages me to get better scores, gradually becoming better and improving my accuracy. It feels really nice, I wish more people gave Rotaeno a chance...

If you don't like Monster Hunter, beat every single entry by hunting each monster with every weapon three times for each rank at least once per game. And pay attention to the soundtrack, dialogues and quest descriptions.

Lock-on camera does exist in Monster Hunter (as of... 4 Ultimate? 3 Ultimate added target camera), but it's very disorienting and difficult to play with. 100%ing Augments for *every* Weapon (~580?) in Monster Hunter Rise doing Rampage Quests was... actually not that bad. I didn't know it would be immediately invalidated in Master Rank, but it was an accomplishment. Seeing Rampage Skills put on their own, dedicated Rampage Skill Decoration slot was an exciting surprise.

@mosesc.6 ай бұрын
not to mention that rhythm games like Project Sekai’s scores can be very rigged since it involves the use of having different skill scores that affect your gameplay scores. I mean, imagine a new player that only has low-level units and getting a full combo, only to get a low score compared to all the others that have high-level units. that’s frustrating.

as much as i currently have over a total of 130 hours across both monster hunter world and rise my biggest grudge against it is that sometimes the hitboxes are so absolutely atrocious that i don't even find "good positioning" to be worth it if i get hit by the body part of the monster that doesn't even move a little or i get hit straight up by air next to the attack even tho there isn't a visual cue of a shockwave of any kind and that problem happens so often to me that i sometimes just take a month (or months) long breaks a few times already and it's probably gonna happen again some day

Elden ring is a dodging game rather than a blocking game imo, you need to perfectly time your dodge rolls rather than block, especially since the blocks are awkward to initiate Monster hunter is far more variable in builds. Youve got greatswords, which are just slow big hits, or insect glaives where you launch across the map in 0.0001 seconds

yeah definitely, shields are mostly good against mobs or bosses you can parry. i really like the variety in weapons in mh when souls feels more like just different flavors of r1, charged r2, or jump attacks for the most part. thanks for the comment

I remember me and a friend getting each other into elden ring and monster hunter world respectively, and how we both hated the others combat so much at first because we both tried to play it like our favorite game. Elden ring and souls games have much stronger defensive options, you mentioned rolling but blocking is also way stronger. Even the low level shields can completely negate all damage from most attacks so long as your stamina holds out. This ended up frustrating my friend, who found out how playing sword and shield In world that his roll, and especially his block were not nearly as reliable as they were in Elden ring. Meanwhile I found Elden ring super annoying and frustrating because I was getting comboed to death by even low tier enemies, which as incredibly annoying since unlike my previous insect glaive and charge blade, Elden ring weapons are far more stationary. You don’t have a lot of options for repositioning mid combo… nor are combos really as substantial. All of this lead me to a core difference between the two games that’s helped me appreciate both. The reason the defensive options is souls games are so much stronger is because the punishment for getting hit is far harsher. Even low tier enemies can hit strings that take half your health bar with maxed out stats. This is why your block and dodge NEED to be so reliable, and why actions like healing need to be so much faster. On the other hand, in MH, your defensive options are far weaker but the punishment isn’t as harsh most often. Even if you take a lot of damage you’re granted a period of invis frames to recover. But now you’re in a jam, if you aren’t playing SNS you need to sheath your weapon, get to a safe distance, and slowly drink a potion. You have more chances to take hits, more window for error, but you are still punished if you overcommit. In the end, this makes approaching the fights very different, and learning these quirks helps you appreciate both combat systems far more.

It doesn't really do anything that's been done before though. Like some have already pointed out, Arcaea has a rather similar approach to player's progression: scoring, potential system, skill courses - it's all there. I think what should have been the sole focus of the entire video (a missed potential dare I say) is 'various scoring systems' and the way different games approach them' and what do they mean in terms of player's progression. Like, beatmania IIDX has a different scoring system that might seem a little weird when compared to most other modern rhythm games and on the surface might seem very tame 88.88% (equivalent of 888888 in SDVX) to get the highest grade (AAA). The catch though is it has extremely tight timing windows for the highest grade 'PGreat', but (!) a relatively lenient window for the lowest grade 'good' that won't break your chain, so the entire argument of there's a way 'between low score -> FC' is somewhat irrelevant to IIDX. In IIDX you can get an FC with an abysmally low score way before you can achieve the highest grade of AAA since 'PGreat' gives you 2 points and 'Good' while not breaking the chain gives 0 points (the real maximum score (EX score) = amount of notes in the song * 2) which basically boils down to IIDX favouring accuracy over anything else and an FC just being a cherry on top of a good score. So I believe there is definitely something to discuss about scoring in general there. And that's just one example.

I'm a Chunithm player, and the Rating system has admittedly been a motivator that has changed my play habits quite a bit. Rather than swinging between chasing the clear/FC on charts, I find I don't mind slowly pushing towards the S rank threshold to push my rating higher and get confirmation that I am indeed improving and using rating as a subtle indicator that maybe I should start trying to push slightly harder charts. I haven't really gotten this sense of progression in a lot of other games (especially combo-based scoring systems, shudder), which has been pretty cool. I know a lot of Chuni players opt to hide their rating but I think as an intermediate player starting to push the upper echelon of charts it has been a great carrot on a stick thus far--even if it does technically suffer from "optimal" play habits you mentioned, like farming perfect ranks on easy charts within a difficulty bracket.
@lebro44016 ай бұрын
I'm kind of a mixed back with the rating system. For one thing, its forces players to play that is in-between comfort zone and outside your comfort zone, which is fine, but sucks quite alot when it punishes you for pushing too far outside your comfort zone.

omg i wish i saw this sooner... really good video! one thing i've noticed about newer players getting into sdvx is that they tend to carry over the bad habits reinforced by other clear/fc-based games, grinding specific charts at a low level, pushing from clear all the way to UC, and pushing higher difficulties too fast. you managed to say everything i felt about how volforce reinforces better habits. once again, excellent video :3

arcaea has nearly the exact same systems, a score based on 10mil = perfect (with an extra point awarded for pure perfects), a grade system to give meaningful marks for certain thresholds, and the potential system that values your overall performance! arcaea was my first rhythm game experience that i *stuck* with, and seeing this video really helped to contextualize *why* i stuck with it! this was an insanely well made video!!
