2:50 - Stanislaw Lem also described the ghetto of Science Fiction literature, in 1984. It's all relative. Although Moore's assessment is mostly correct for the time of this interview, there were historically plenty of cash-in attempts at "girl comics" throughout the medium's history. While it certainly wasn't true in the 80's, Young Love by Simon & Kirby ran for two decades from the 50's to the 70's and sold millions of copies.

The list of what he hasn't changed up on would be shorter, but I'll do my best here. He basically disowned all the work he's done for DC, and he thinks that the comics industry is a hell scape that screws over creators (which is true) and usually tells young creators not to get into comics in the first place. He thinks that superheroes in particular are a white supremacist fantasy that are infantilizing culture. He doesn't have any copies of his work in comics in his house, as they only remind him of friendships that he's lost. Although, he has a lot of love for comics as a storytelling medium, he thinks the state of the comics industry is so shattered that he no longer reads comics and wants nothing to do with them. He spends more time writing short stories and novels, and doesn't want to work in comics ever again. I think the big business attitude in the American entertainment industry got the best of him, and he's been very bitter about that fact. He also doesn't think that a lot of people even understand his work to begin with, by idolizing characters like Rorschach, when he was intended to be abhorrent instead of virtuous. I don't think he regrets the success he's achieved, but he definitely regrets the work he did for DC. I think he would've been happier learning French and making comics in France, which offer more respect to the medium and creators in comics. I'm basing these observations over interviews I've seen and his own later work, such as the story "What We Can Know About Thunderman", from his book "Illuminations".

I wish she had asked him what Swamp Thing sounded like, when Alan talked in his voice. Think about it. If he'd let us hear it, that would be Swamp Thing's ACTUAL voice. As he envisaged it to actually be. I could have reread the whole run with Swamp Thing's actual voice, as the creator intended it to sound, playing in my head the whole time.

It's been 36 years and we are still yet to see a comic book movie that would be as well written as some of the comic books. Well, perhaps, with the exception of the Dark Knight... And I guess Sam Raimi's Spider-Man was not bad.

Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, and only Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing are my favorite…Swamp Thing comics. I didn’t know how cool comics could be until I sat a read that first issue. I heard some other, inadequate writer took over after Alan was done, who shitcanned the whole idea that the Swamp itself took on the consciousness of Alec Holland, making Alec Holland alive again, even after that whole thing where the Swamp Thing says goodbye to Alec’s spirit, even giving him a proper burial…yeah, I only like Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing.🤷♂️
@TenementGentleman Жыл бұрын
@@evanabbott2737you should read Nancy Collins run on Swamp Thing. Even though it comes 50 issues after Moore's run it feels like a direct continuation of his work. Collins is actually from the American Southeast near the Mississippi Delta so her localized version of Swampy is exceptional. She also does a much better job of writing the various side characters and fleshing out the voices of women within the series.

In 2023, The problem now, is the Writers put themselves before the characters they are writing. Most writers today are placed on a title to get it through the door. You can tell Alan Moore was involved and knew his characters. There are also a lack of world builders, so much so that Marvel has to hire Jonathan Hickman to world build or fix some comic lines to get other writers up and going. There's evidence of this in the new X-Men line. They get started and canceled shortly.
