Thank u for the demo. Youve also got some great comments from other watchers. My specialty is being a word freak. Its sad being this obsessive but I just have to say something about ur pronunciation of the word excess. Excess starts with an e that is pronounced like the e in the word egg, immediately followed by the letter x....ex-cess. It means when theres an amount left over. Access, pronounced like axe-cess, is an incorrect pronunciation of excess. Also, access means when one is given permission to enter something ... for example, the access road running alongside an interstate, permits drivers to enter the interstate. So you wiped off the excess...not the access.

After I removed all the rust from the Dutch oven I was restoring, I rinsed it with water, dried it with a towel, and then dried it in the oven for 10 minutes. It came out of the oven with more rust than it started with. Why?
@CastIronEric21 күн бұрын
@@PressurePlusTime because you need to seal it with some type of oil

@@CastIronEric sure but it needs to be dried before it can be oiled. It rusted when I heated it to evaporate the water from rinsing it.

I’ve watched a number of videos about cleaning and re-seasoning cast iron…I liked yours the best. I used this method to clean my skillet, except I put it into a 500 degree oven for one hour. I put it in the oven upside down: after it was in the oven for one hour, I turned the oven off and left it in a while to cool. I did this twice. Was supposed to do three times, but two worked for me. I liked your method of cleaning with half water, half vinegar, plus baking soda! Thanks for the information!

One of the best restoration vids I've seen. I have three that I rescued. I have a sand blaster but something in my gut said not to do that. Getting the vinegar out right now...thanks Eric!
@imasahm18 күн бұрын
Correct on the sandblaster! My husband just got his first-ever sandblaster set up and got my little #3 Wagner, that had a smooth-as-a-baby's-butt bottom, and did not need anything done - he sandblasted it back to raw iron and brought it in to show me what a great job he did! OMG! And he wasn't wearing gloves and handled it with bare hands. I'm still in the process of seasoning it and hoping I can get that smooth bottom back (yes, I know that won't happen now).

I just refinished a rusty old Goodwill 8" cast iron skillet with pour spouts on both side of the rim. I used the same plastic tub but dumped in a can of Lye and enough water to cover the pan completely. Stir the lye with a flat stick to dissolve it all, then gently put the pan in the tub. DON'T SPLASH ANY OF THIS ON YOURSELF OR YOUR CLOTHES. Lye is caustic soda and is corrosive. Make this mixture outside in open air. You do not want these odors or fumes in the house. Soak overnight or longer. Remove and rinse with lots of clear water, usually from your garden hose. Heat to dry completely and do the seasoning process. Lye is sold as a drain opener. You can dispose by pouring it down drains a little at a time. I advise you to wear rubber gloves when handling this. Be careful.

I watched a lady restore cast iron, and she used Lye to soak the pan. This one might have taken 24-48 hours to soak in the Lye. She DID say, place the water in the bucket first, then the lye. Then clean the way you did. It worked GREAT.

I use corse stainless scouring pad, steel wool, heat in oven or BBQ and get it hot 4-500, brush off soot from stains that come out when heated, spray with canola oil, wipe off (only want a light coat) and heat to flash point, repeat that last step until happy. Heavily stained use a wire wheel on a drill but don't press hard. If it's newer or from China or Taiwan throw it away and go get a real pan lol.

For old pans you find at yard sales, flea markets etc. I would definitely recommend getting a LEAD testing kit from lowes / Home depot / Amazon and run a test strip over the surface. People sometimes used old cast iron pans to melt lead for reloading ammunition back around 100 or so years ago. The test kits are cheap, quick and easy to use. There might have been a reason Great Grandpa left that pan out in the barn instead of letting Nana make biscuits in it.

rapeseed oil really unhealthy? Yes it is the problem with rapeseed oil is that it is inflammatory response of the body not to mention the euric acid which is minorly toxic But the thing is it's highly unstable cooking oil which produces carcagonic (cancer) causing compounds and because of the inflammatory response it can lead to digestion issues which in turn causes a whole host of problems with your body

I hope you make more videos. You’re not the first person who has complained about the “sandy“ texture of the Lodge cast iron, but it can actually be an advantage. Why? It takes a lot longer to correctly season a Lodge piece of cast iron, but once you have built up the seasoning from your regular cooking, you will get a perfectly glass-like surface inside the skillet, as the texture will capture those bits of oil that you are constantly putting through the process of polymerization. I have lots of pieces of cast iron , both high-end and Lodge. My Field is the least favorite, while my very old Lodge is absolutely stupendous.
