thank you!! best tutorial ive seen that worked. the only thing, i had to disable ipv6 because it kept hanging up on that step in setup. you can get to a simple shell before install and run " echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6 " and it configured via ipv4 instead.

@@Whats.New.Andrew Perfect. So, to set up your home server, which makes you choose between virtualizing with Proxmox a Ubuntu Server VM or installing a Ubuntu server directly?. Thank you from Spain
@Whats.New.Andrew
@Whats.New.Andrew 7 күн бұрын
Hi @rafapozo - I like to use Proxmox as my hypervisor because it allows a lot more flexibility over putting Ubuntu or another server on the computer as the only operating system. This approach allows me to run multiple servers at the same time on one computer. I can also create templates for different operating systems (Ubuntu, Windows, etc) and easily deploy a new VM to create a test environment, a temporary server, or a new production machine. For example, in my current homelab I have a VM running Minecraft and other VMs running different hosted apps. This way if there is an issue on the Minecraft server I can take that server offline, but none of the other servers are impacted. I can also allocate resources like RAM and CPU differently for each VM based on their needs. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have more questions! Also, kind of unrelated, but I am starting a discord server to be able to discuss all of this stuff more, so if you are interested in joining let me know and I will share the link.

Hi @daviddonnelly8406 - OMV is a web interface, so there will not be anything on a connected console display. I am wondering if that is a Rpi5 issue? I know that Proxmox's support for ARM devices like Raspberry Pi is experimental, and certain features (like ethernet ports) are not fully functional. That is funny! The small machine I use for demos is a Dell Optiplex 9020. I use Proxmox as the base OS and then run VMs and LXCs on it. Depending on where you are, ebay has some that are relatively inexpensive and in both the desktop form factor and a tower version that will allow adding more internal drives. One of these would be perfect to start your setup. I use a 1 TB ssd boot drive and all the VMs sit on that. Thanks for the video. Everything explained perfectly. Just one question, if I wanted to use 2 disks that are already configured in raid on another PC with data inside (without having to format them), what would the procedure be? Thank you.
@Whats.New.Andrew
@Whats.New.Andrew 21 күн бұрын
Hello @simonelucibello1737 - That can be tricky. If you have a dedicated hardware RAID controller that can be moved (plugs into your PCI slot) then you should be ok to move to another machine provided you plug the drives back in the same way they are currently (same port order). Since the configuration is stored on the RAID controller it will handle the drive move. If you have an on-board RAID controller that is a part of your motherboard or use software RAID then it is more difficult and the chances of success are low. I have done a RAID card move successfully, but have never had success moving from an on-board RAID controller. I have not even attempted to do a migration with software RAID. The best option to not lose data is likely a backup and restore after you move the drives.

@Whats.New.Andrew
@Whats.New.Andrew 27 күн бұрын
Hi @Wozza2011 - Thanks! Yes, here is how you can set up an NFS share on your Synology. Log into your sinology and go to your "Control Panel" In there you can click on "shared Folder" and see the shares (or create one). For the folder you want to share click edit and go to NFS permissions. Click create and fill out the IP address of your Plex machine in the Hostname field. Then you want whatever permissions below that. For squash, "Map all users to admin" will initially let you connect and test things out. Then you can change permissions later. Also check the last box for "allow users to access mounted sub folders". That should allow a connection from plex to the sinology. You will also see the mount path that you will need to use to access the folder. In your fstab file on your Plex machine you will use the following format: <IP of your Synology>:/share/folder/mount/path /mount/point/on/plex/machine nfs defaults 0 0 Hope this helps!

That is odd. The fstab is there to auto mount on reboot. Check that at the end of your line you have "nfs defaults 0 0" (without the quotes) after your path to the mountpoint. Sometimes the zeros at the end get dropped and can cause issues.

Good video. On my travels I have yet to come across a video that describes what you can do if your ISP uses CGNAT. I can't point my domain name at my ISP IP as its constantly changing. I know a large percentage of UK users have the same problem and the only way you can get around it is to pay crazy money for a business line. That isn't an option. I pay £25 pm for a 1GB fibre line and my workplace pays £343 pm for a 200MB leased line! Tailscale would be a nightmare to have to install as i use so many different machines and also proxmox VMs and CTs.

Hi @baileyboy3687 - Changing IPs s so frustrating. I think you might want to take a look at Cloudflare tunnels! One of my first videos was about this and you don't even need to worry about port forwarding. You can set up the client on a single machine in your homelab to create the tunnel back to Cloudflare. Then within cloudflare you can point domains and sub-domains to your various machines within your network. This will bypass any issues with a change of IP as all traffic travels over the tunnel between Cloudflare and your machine. You will just need to change your nameservers to point to Cloudflare if you are not hosting your domains there already. My video is linked below. For example, you can have yourdomain.com point to your service 192.168.1.112:portX and also have subdomain.yourdomain.com point to a service on another local machine like 192.168.1.123:por2 Basically it gives you a connection directly to cloudflare and you route all your traffic from there. It is pretty easy to set up, and I am happy to answer any questions you might have on it as well. Thanks for watching! kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYC8iIKGobx5fLs

have you considered using something like a VPN with a dedicated IP? I know "Private Internet Access" has the option for Dedicated IP's, so as long as your computer is connected to the internet it wont matter what IP the ISP gives you as your publicly presented IP will not change. if you do it monthly its and additional £4.50/month for dedicated IP or pay for 3 years for £81 (£2.25/mnth)

I have the same problem with all my Starlink connections across Europe. I use Tailscale and it's free. Very easy to setup, when you connect any of your computers you connect to your own private network and you can see all your modems like a local LAN. If you started Frigate using the command line you can do the following 'docker pull ghcr.io/blakeblackshear/frigate:stable' to get the latest image followed by 'docker run -d ...' with all the necessary parameters to start the container 2. If you used portainer then you can do the following: Go to your stacks and under editor for Frigate click "Update the stack" In the pop up move the slider to enable "re-pull image and redeploy" This will get the latest image and then re-start everything. You can then go back to your stack in Portainer and re-deploy Frigate again. Sometimes that helps. If it is still unhealthy, go to your containers link in Frigate and click the left icon under "Quick Actions". It looks like a paper icon and will show you the log files as Frigate is running. Great video! Recently moved my proxmox home server to ugreen dxp6800 and looking for a solution for mixed drive sizes! Could you do a video on restoring a failed drive in a raid 5 or 6 scenario?

@yuso08yusoworld4 - I like that idea for a video. Right now I do not have anything configured in those RAID setups, so I will take a look at when I might be able to do something like this. Thanks so much for watching!

Great tutorial, thanks... just one question: I am actually migrating my OMV system from Raspberry Pi to ProxMox VM. So I will use my old disks (18TB + 18TB), EXT4, etc (they are WD disks USB3.0), and I want to preserve the files, partition etc... (I did this migrating from RB Pi 3 to 4 and worked fine 1,5 years ago - but easy, the same kind of platform). Now the question: is the drives configuration part of the video also valid for "USB" Disks ? SATA / Mapping etc ? (Or should I add them as "USB Ports" into the ProxMox configuration ? (And then like the old migration, use the disks as USB disks) thanks 😊

Hi @deivissergio2378 - the drive configuration part of the video should work just fine for USB as well. They will show up the same way an internal drive would. When you connect them and go to storage on your proxmox node you will see them found as sdb/sdc or similar. The partitions will also show that already exist. In your case the EXT4 partitions. My only caveat is that if these are your only copy of the data be careful. I have had migrations like this work and also have them fail miserably and had to restore the data. Something to keep in mind so you do not lose everything. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

@@Whats.New.Andrew Thanks Andrew, worked lime a charm !! I was able to map the USB drives as "SATA" drives, and the system recognized the old files structure, and everything worked fine. I also noticed that the file transfer between computers and NAS improved like 20% in speed (so I really had a limitation using my Raspberry Pi, perhaps also to manage the USB and data transfer was quite hard for the RPi). Once again thanks for the tips and great video !! 🙌

Andrew - thanks for the tutorial! I've just run into an issue though. After installing Plex on the Ubuntu VM, I was not prompted to add my Media via the web portal. Is there any way to get this to show up again? Right now, when I'm at the IP address on Port 32400 it prompts me to "Get" Plex Media Server, not to setup my Media Folders...

Hi @misterkush7 - you can add more media folders/libraries by going to the settings menu. Here is a link to the overview on how to create libraries in Plex. Let me know if this does not help! support.plex.tv/articles/200288926-creating-libraries/

@@Whats.New.Andrew Unfortunately, it only ever pops up the web interface. There's not been an option where I can specify that the machine running Plex is the server itself. I do think that this has something to do with my Proxmox environment, and I was considering nuking the node and starting from scratch. I appreciate your help man!

Great video! Thank you! I'm having issues with installing Portainer due to AppArmor. Any ideas why?
@Whats.New.Andrew
@Whats.New.Andrew 2 ай бұрын
Hi @MortenSJ007 - Make sure you are running it as a privileged container as I have seen that issue typically when it is unprivileged. If you are running privileged and are still having issues then I would suggest trying one of the great Proxmox VE Helper-scripts. This will save a lot of frustration and headaches. The one to create an LXC in Proxmox is located at the link below and has the option to install Portainer and Docker Compose: tteck.github.io/Proxmox/#docker-lxc You can open your shell in your Proxmox VE and run the bash script from the site there to create the LXC automatically. It will ask a series of set up questions similar to setting up an LXC in the Proxmox GUI, and once you go through the options you will be prompted if you want to install Portainer and Docker Compose. Say yes, and it will install both for you. Let me know if you still have questions! Good luck!

I tried to do this tutorial, but get this error: mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.xxx:/NVR/Frigate mount: (hint) your fstab has been modified, but systemd still uses the old version; use 'systemctl daemon-reload' to reload. Can you help me?
@Whats.New.Andrew
@Whats.New.Andrew Ай бұрын
Hi @kastanf1 - Sorry to be slow reply...It looks like your comment got held for some reason. That error means that even though you have edited the fstab file it is still referencing the old one, so you either need to run the command 'systemctl daemon-reload' or reboot the LXC. Hopefully you were able to move past this successfully! Thanks for watching.

Hey! Awesome explanation 😊. Question. Does it works if my Proxmox is running on an old Mac 2011 with integrated GPU?😢
@Whats.New.Andrew
@Whats.New.Andrew 2 ай бұрын
Hi @blemysh0 - Thanks for the feedback. To check if it will work on a Mac with an integrated GPU, you need to identify your GPU. Go into the shell of the Proxmox node (not a VM) and type 'lspci'. This command will display all PCI devices on the machine. If the integrated GPU is an NVIDIA card then I would think this guide would work. You can test it with a new VM. If it doesn't work, you can simply delete the VM and then revert the changes on the Proxmox node. If you need help reverting the changes, I can provide the steps. I haven't run Proxmox on a Mac, so I'm not entirely sure without knowing the hardware. The 'lspci' command should help identify it for you.

So I think the tuto "as is" I can't follow it straistraightforward, so I have to search for the drivers for that. I'll come up with updates. Thanks again! Great work.
