Even if the exhaust valve is open when the engine turns over the piston pushes out 95% of the water then closes the valve open the intake and then fires. That 110 doesn’t have a high enough compression ratio to actually hurt anything even if there is a small amount of water in the cylinder. And if an engine is running water will never make through the exhaust and into the engine. It physically can’t move that fast even at idle. Ur talkin 800-1300rpm of the crank which half of those would be the engine firing and producing exhaust gases so 400-650 in a minute which in turn winds up being around 6.7 to 10.8 times per second that the engine produces 110 cc’s of exhaust gases. Water doesn’t move that fast unless extremely pressurized. People don’t understand how many times a engine actually does things until u spell it out for them

Mostly false. If an exhaust valve is open on engine off then it will hydrolock less common then made out to be on small and 2stroke engines. Bad for cars

I will say eventually youll cut the engine and the exhaust valve will be open hopefully it doesnt fill the cylinder but maybe since theres no hole for air to escape or burp so it may not get water in it just like if you put a straw in water with your finger water will not enter the bottom til you release your finger.
@shiminowind
@shiminowind 22 сағат бұрын
You can most certaily can suck water through the exhaust. Combination of the exhaust, header, and engine itself that as they all cool, can suck the water right through the exhaust and into the engine through open or partially open exhaust valves. Cold air is denser and takes up less volume than warm air... so as it cools, it can create quite a suction if it's in a confined area. Less likely to occur, and 99% of the time, you are fine, but it can and does happen more than people think. It's happened to me. And if the engine has problems and is not running correctly it can create back pressure and if you have exhaust valves that dont close all the way due to carbon build up or other issues like a bent valve it will allow air/water to enter the cylinder/s through the exhaust valve. The number of people who talk down on others or say otherwise is sad. As a mechanic of 20+ years, you have no idea what you are talking about if you say it can't or won't happen. It's all circumstantial, but it does happen. Every engine has better or worse odds but nonetheless the odds are there

Yeah except when you shut it off in the exhaust valve is still open. then you have a brick. What does boat motors have the exhaust exit through the prop, but the water is never allowed to travel up into the cylinder head where the valve could be left open when you shut it off😂

Jetskis and their owners are very familiar with this, and your exhaust system may hold a bubble inside the exhaust pipe when it’s in perfect condition, but even a slight tip side to side could let water enter through the exhaust valve into the cylinder, causing hydrolock; when your piston is pushing the incompressible water out the small exhaust ports, and bends the connecting rods in the process.
