Thanks for showing me how to hold their planishing ball on my vise! I bought their 3 D printed hardie shank for $25 and it broke after 3 hits on my anvil! Complete junk! Do not buy!

If you have a giant bench vise this might work with the tape. I almost broke my post vise doing this! I don’t recommend unless you have a hefty vise!

Thanks John, I ordered this kit also and had a lot of problems with it! I agree the swage was probably worth it. The kit is not! The 1/4 copper is way too thick to to do by hand and Housemade was not very helpful when I had a question. They are machinists and not blacksmiths. I did the same thing and welded a ball bearing onto a shank. Not everyone has a flypress or hydraulic press. I was disappointed with the kit and couldn’t get a scoop I would sell. Thinner copper is the key and rolling your own holes. I’ve done much better spoons without their tools. Thanks for your video

Ok, so now I'll go and try it out. The little gas forge is getting just too expensive. Hope it works for me!

Even now, I love this challenge. It's a way to hone or learn a skill that I personally never thought I could. As a hobbyist wood carver, I have adjusted the measurements to 1" by 4". And just asked myself "what can I make out of this?" Thank you for such inspiration. Truly thank you.

Hey buddy. I’m like you. I make due with what I have. Not a blacksmith by any stretch, but I’ve made a few things just by sticking the metal in a vent hole of a burn barrel. A Dutch oven lid lifter, some pokers. Even a railroad spike tomahawk. Just took a long long time between heats. Thank you for sharing with us.

Fascinating machine. Seems to make metal forging much more accessible. I mean, it looks easy. I've never forged a thing in my life, but watching this, yeah, I think I could manage. And clearly, this machine saves a lot of energy. In ways, it's probably a lot safer too.

I try to brush the scale off after twisting before going to the torch. The scale tends to flake off in chunks but some flakes stay attached to the twist and will either melt and stick to the twist, which can be a pain to remove, or the flakes pop off into the torch flame and can make the torch extinguish. Maybe depends on the tip you like using too, I tend to use a #6 welding tip for most of my corrective heats.

Maybe its too late to ask, but how does it compare to h13 in a matter of performance? Because it looks much easier to forge, h13 is a pain in the rear to hand forge.

Good project! Are you comfortable saying how many hours you have invested and if selling the gate, the ballpark cost to a client? I am always curious about costs and maybe a little too nosy too. If it were my gate, I would definitely consider powder coating the finished product, even though that is not keeping with the style. Painting and keeping rust at bay would be time-consuming. But then again, a good rust coat might be the way to go. It would still outlive a young owner. Thanks.
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 5 күн бұрын
Since this isn't a client project, I'm not keeping track of hours. But my guess would be around 100 so far. I would estimate $20,000 if I were making it for sale. This will be indoors, so I'm not very worried about rust. Probably an oil or wax based finish.

Is the gate for a residential or commercial client, and is a project of this complexity more or less profitable than a less complex project?
@BlackBearForge
@BlackBearForge 6 күн бұрын
This gate is actually just for the experience in making a gate of this style. So, it isn't making any money. But it all depends on proper estimating to make sure you get paid if it's for a customer. I think for most shops less complex jobs tend to be more profitable. However if you have the right customer base working for people with loads of disposable income can open up opportunities to do high end work. The first video of this project explains more about it kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWerZZyklL6Ij7c
