One of my favorite handloads for the 460R is a Berry's plated 185gr. loaded to 1,461fps/877fpe - not a hot load but very effective. The plated RN bullet has a hard shell to enhance chambering, but the bulbous nose behaves just like a flat point at impact speeds over 1,200fps creating a broad shock cone just off the nose ogive. I have the Berry's thick-plated 230gr loaded to 1,408fps/1,013pfe - same performance, it penetrates deeply, but the soft core deforms like a hard cast! I have run the 185gr. load up to 1,580fps/1,026fpe and the gun handles it just fine, but that's sort of the problem with the 460 Rowland, the muzzle brake really reduces felt recoil so unlike shooting stout 44mag loads in a revolver that kick like a mule to alert you to how hot the load is, in the Rowland they're a non-event! I've caught myself shooting multiple magazines of full-power Rowland as if it were low-power 38spl because the gun simply doesn't kick like "magnums" normally do! I'm also running a 460 Rowland V2 damper in my gun that allows me to use a 9 pound action spring for both full power loads and mild 45ACP. I consider the V2 a necessary part of any 1911 conversion because it eliminates the need for all the modifications to counter slide energy, and preserves the guns original dwell timing, and chambering is improved because the breech face isn't slamming into the round like it does with a 20-24 pound action spring.

You're like me, I shoot like crap the first bird or two, then by the third I am dead on, haha. I swear every year I'm going to go to the trap range to get a little practice before waterfowl season, but I get busy. Looks like a good time with your kids, The south platte is legendary, it's a blessing you get to hunt it. For me it's at least an 8 hour drive away, if not further.

Incredulous. While the 44 mag is an excellent deer round within 75 yards it was never meant to be an ethical deer killing round in regards to killing power. Just because you can make a hit at 150 or 200 yards does not mean that the deer will be yours to find due to inadequate velocity to upset the bullet and very poor sectional density. At these longer ranges you will not get pass thru and very little blood trail if any at all. Yes the deer will die but it might take a day or two but the deer will be long gone and not yours to recover. If you need to shoot from 150 to 200 yards you need a more cabable cartridge that is time tested with traditional knowledge rather than running on the extreme edge of the 44 magnum.

@@33journeyman why does this comment read like it was written with AI?… I don’t think you really grasped the point of the video, bud. Did you watch and listen to the whole thing? Um, no. I cover in this video that it is more capable than 75 or 100 yards, and that shot placement is critical. Really? You think that a 240gr .430” bullet at landing in the lungs and heart at 950-1,100 FPS (225+ yard velocities out of a rifle/carbine starting at 1,725 FPS, conservatively) will take the animal multiple days to expire? Tell that to the muzzleloading hunters that use the same exact bullets in sabot for their .45 and .50 cal muzzle loaders and confidently and consistently kill deer at 100 to 250 yards every year. What’s the difference? And what does “killing power” mean? That’s not a real unit of measure… If you take the exact load data I demonstrate in the video and plug it into any ballistic calculator, the outputs are more than sufficient for the proper dispatch of medium game out to 225+ yards. The Hornady .430” 240gr XTP bullet has a BC of .201 and an SD of .185 - the bullet will reliably expand and or tumble down to about 800 FPS (conservatively). With a start velocity out of a 16” carbine of 1,725 FPS it will not go transonic until around 225 yards, meaning it still carries the velocity and energy to expand until around the 300 yard mark. Will it be able to penetrate sufficiently to kill at 300? Yes. Will it pass through? Most likely not on most deer. Most critically is, again, the trajectory of the round and the user being capable of making a hit reliably and accurately. That is the most critical factor in this scenario, not the ballistics of the round. The point of the exercise in the video was not to argue what is best as a deer round, but to demonstrate that yes, you can indeed make use of the cartridge out of a rifle or carbine at more moderate ranges and it does not exclusively have to be a “brush gun”.
@33journeyman
@33journeyman 6 күн бұрын
Thank you for the spirited response although I find your ballistic rebuttal rather academic and moot in the lever action rifles. If you can obtain 3 inch MOA your doing well in this platform that extrapolates to 6 moa at 200 yards off the bench under ideal conditions. Additionally a 10 kill zone is rather generous as well again working at the fringes. The old time muzzle loaders were certainly aware that closer is always better but do subsistence living and survival a hail Mary shot was better than nothing. You yourself demonstrated that your a good shot and rifleman probably better than most but with said you couldn't confidently make a 125 yard shot off hand that can certainly lead to a miss or worse yet a guy shot. I'm a seasoned hunter that insists on good clean kills that dispatch the game in seconds rather than 10 minutes or hours. That is what I mean by killing power and if your going to shoot 150 and 200 yard shots there are much better chambering to choose from. Again , just because you can doesn't mean you should do so. Hunting here in Snowy Ohio this week with the wind fluctuating is a far cry from shooting on a calm sunny 75 degree in my tee shirt , shorts , and flip flops. If you still insist on the 44 magnum to be an ethical deer hunting round out to 200 yards I would suggest a properly constructed bullet and a bolt action rifle as well such as my Remington 788 with a 22 inch barrel but they're hard to find. So in summation Bud , I hope your younger viewers take my 75 yard recommendation and have fun while being ethical. Peace to you and yes I enjoyed your video and I think this topic is very relevant to my favorite 44 mag Win model 94.

I bought one several years ago, it was an import thru century arms. I absolutely love mine. I havent shot anywhere near 1000 rounds thru it but def more than a couple hundred as ammos not to expensive but Im also not very rich either. But I hunt with it every year and have only had one walk but that was due to the deer jumping right before I pulled the trigger. Otherwise its always spot on until Ive shot multiple rounds thru it and barrel heating up it does tend to get off a bit but at 100 yards to 200 Ive no complaints about it. I still have the thumbhole stock that came on it.

Regardless of your rude comment... Sounds like the information presented didn't satisfy what you are looking for, or you are not aware of the fact that a chamber in poor condition can cause a high number of failures to extract/eject in any firearm, but especially shotguns. Let's get a few things straight for you: 1) this was not a promotion of Flexhone - BUT, they are the only company offering bore and chamber hones for all gauges of shotguns. 2) You can clean and polish a chamber without a hone, but sometimes a hone is needed to get the job done. 3) I identify in my opening statements of the video that checking the condition of your extractor, extractor spring, and ejector are also important to diagnosing and correcting consistent malfunctions. Maybe you can come back and re-watch the video with a bit better attention span and or ask a polite question for help with what you are needing. - Drake

I have an 11-48 16ga that was manufactured in March of 1949. I also paid $350 for mine about ten years ago. Like you, I questioned whether or not it had been refinished. I don’t believe it was but the bluing and walnut finish is still in fantastic condition. Mine came with a threaded poly choke. Would that have been an option from Remington or would you think it was as done aftermarket? Anyway, you have a great shotgun there, wouldn’t it be nice to see today’s shotguns built with the same quality material and craftsmanship. Great video

I was wondering what gas block you were running? And is it a non adjustable?
@AmericanArmsChannel
@AmericanArmsChannel 18 күн бұрын
The gas-block I used on this build is fixed port size and was from Brownell's (as was the upper receiver). FYI, because this is usually where questions like this lead... The barrel is the Faxon "Big-Gunner" .458 SOCOM barrel and ported moderately at carbine-length. I have not had any gassing issues with all of the cartridges I have loaded for the carbine, and the biggest fight for reliability is action spring/buffer weight, magazines, and the feed ramp profile of the upper receiver and barrel extension. I will do another video on this build at some point in the future.

Yes; with Remington .223 Rem brass resized to 25-45 and using 23.3gr of A2200 it was 2,375 average (rounded 5-shot average) without the suppressor. At below 60 degrees F and no suppressor there were minimal to no pressure signs. With the suppressor there were early unlocking signs with slightly cratered primers minor ejector swipes. Velocities with the suppressor also went up about 35-50 FPS per shot. I would recommend pursuing a slightly slower burning powder like H335 or A2230 for better velocities and suppressed use, or equipping the rifle with an adjustable gas block.

Good video. I owned a couple Ithaca mag-10 that I used for waterfowl. Beautiful weapons and easy to shoot and as the old saying goes " more lead, more dead ". I see no reason for increasing the tube capacity and then having to plug it to conform to waterfowl regulations. I also see no need to add weight to an already heavy weapon.

I like the G10, but the Mag-10 is still my true-love for 10ga fowling pieces. The more I have hunted with my Mag-10, the more I am convinced it needs to be made again for modern fowlers. The G10 fills a role, and I would not complain about a Mag-10 variation being created to extend capacity and "modernize", but for waterfowl it works wonderfully as it is. I am interested to see more details on this. I got 3 pounds of triple7 sitting around. What velocities are you getting with this load? Any overpressure signs on the brass? I know Triple7 is about 15% higher pressure than normal BP.
@AmericanArmsChannel
@AmericanArmsChannel 18 күн бұрын
When I chronographed this loading I recorded an average around 850-900 FPS, if I recall correctly. No pressure signs were found to have occurred. Even though Tripple7 generates higher pressures than true BP, it doesn't even get close to the max pressures of a smokeless cartridge like 45 ACP at the volume that will fit in the case and allow for the bullet to seat correctly. Using a hard-cast or jacketed bullet can change this though, so always be cautious when working up an unknown load. Thanks for watching and the comment. - Drake

As far as the "slam fire," this is not alreadys because of the firing pin. I've had a brand new AK from PSA, that didn't neccessarily ever slam fire. But it was light striking the primers, which yes is because of the floating firing pin. However it being caused by the "extractor spring" being way too tight. Which may have just needed to be worn in a little bit, but I've never had any of my other Aks at that tight. As far as the the amount of pressure it takes for the extractor to grip the rim of each bullet casing. I ended up shaving the extractor spring down a little, which worked and made it lighter. An softened up the light strikes that you could notice on the primers, and I still ended up buying a new bolt anyways. Which was easy smother, but was just something I noticed that could have caused slam fires.
@AmericanArmsChannel
@AmericanArmsChannel 10 күн бұрын
I have never experienced or read of extractor tension causing a slam fire... not to discredit your experience, but this doesn't hold water in my mind. It wouldn't stand to reason that increased extractor tension, retarding the rate at which the bolt is closing as the higher tension requires greater force to overcome its resistance, would result in slam fires. I am not seeing how that would happen. Stuck or sticky firing pins? Yes, always a culprit. Free-float firing pin designs with a heavy pin and thin primers? Yup. M1 Carbines and M1 Garands almost always have a ridiculously over-powered extractor springs and have free floating firing pins. the only time they have slam fires is on very thin commercial primers or if the firing pin channel is full of gunk and the pin is sticking forward. Thanks for watching and the comment. I will think about this info some more and see where it takes me. Always learning something new... - Drake

@AmericanArmsChannel
@AmericanArmsChannel 22 күн бұрын
Not true, the energy and penetration on a 44 magnum load from a carbine or rifle is more than sufficient for whitetail well past 200 yards. What really becomes a hindering factor is trajectory. Keep in mind, energy is only one part of the equation in ballistics. Penetration and energy transfer are key to effective wound channels to dispatch a game animal quickly.
@Rational_thinker_212
@Rational_thinker_212 22 күн бұрын
30-30 at a hundred yards has more energy than a 44 at 10 yards. Talk all you want about terminal ballistics on animals until you try tracking a wounded deer/elk without an exit wound you won't understand how important penetration is. In any scenario a smaller diameter, higher sectional density bullet with more velocity is a better choice for hunting med/large animals. But this test makes for interesting youtube. I watched it. and gave you a thumbs up.
@AmericanArmsChannel
@AmericanArmsChannel 10 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and the like; It's appreciated. You ever shoot a deer with a round ball in a 45 or 50 cal muzzleloader at 75-100 yards? That's about what you are going to get with a 44 mag, maybe a bit better at 200+ yards. Penetration is more than enough, energy for permanent and temporary wound channel is there, so really it comes down to can you hit it and can you put it where it needs to be? No doubt that a high velocity, full power rifle cartridge is inherently a better choice all around, but it doesn't limit the use of a cartridge like 44 mag to 100 yards. Shot placement will be critical and plenty of deer are wounded and lost every year with high-power rifle cartridges. Seen it personally, talked about it with a lot of folks. Thanks again for watching and the comments. God bless and keep your powder dry. - Drake

Good video. I long ago gave up on deer hunting with a lever gun. It just didn't make sense. I have a Remington model 7 and a Winchester Low Wall, both guns with scout scopes so they are just as handy as a lever gun - but much more accurate. The scout scope on the Low Wall also gives easy access to the loading port. A lot of people sneer at scout scopes, but it is wrong to consider them as poor scopes. Instead, think of them as the best possible iron sight, which is plausible because they leave the rifle handy just like irons do.

I have tried to respond to this comment at least 3 times and it doesn't post.... NO, I did not almost shoot my dog. Thanks for the concern, but not your property, not your worry. Gunner was away and to the right of where I was shooting. By the time he was in the water and working towards the bird, he was still well to the right and under the line of fire. I made the decision to continue firing because I was aware of his position and evaluated that he was safe if I fired again to dispatch the bird. He broke, and he shouldn't have. I am still working on that issue and lack of hunting and time to train doesn't help him. However, he AT NO TIME WAS IN DANGER OF BEING SHOT. If you have never hunted flushed game with hunting dogs, especially rabbits, you know that there is a lot of safety considerations and level of confidence building that has to occur before you become OK with shooting over and or in front of a dog and are proficient in doing so. A situation can go from NO SHOOT to SHOOT to NO SHOOT in a blink of an eye. Not your cup of tea? then don't do it, but don't start junk in a comment section that you obviously took no time to consider or think through.
