Awesome video Joe! Looe looks clean (little macroalgae) despite the low coral cover. Sea fans look a lot less common than when I worked there ~2,000. All the Xestosponia were amazing!

Thanks John! Yes, all the large parrots are doing their job, even without urchins. Fire coral is almost completely gone. Many dead gorg skeletons in deeper water. GBSs are taking over for now....

Ahhhhh! Those are THE most happiest and healthiest fish in an aquarium I’ve ever witnessed. Absolutely wonderful! How do you have two male betas in a tank? Are they just that happy that they are not fighting? I noticed them right before you mentioned it and was in awe. Do you think the hexagon shape of these antique tanks is more beneficial for the fish? I get the sense they may like the circular spread better than today’s rectangle- unless some outcropping of rock in the center provides a similar feel. I think it’s a more natural layout for fish. Thank you for sharing. I have always been curious about these old aquariums since I fist saw etchings of them.

Yes, you can keep 2+ males if they can get away from each other -- in this tank, they escape behind the central column. But more bettas is better because it diffuses the fighting across many fish. They are SO much happier than living in tiny bowls.

Yes, see the video description for location -- these are all sites that are regularly dived by the Volivoli dive boats, so if you go to the Volivoli Resort you should see these reefs. Note the date of the video -- subsequent bleaching from this summer's warm water could have occurred.

Sadly, the corals were only healthy in a few places -- the Maldives have sustained multiple bleaching events in the past decade, resulting in substantial degradation in living hard coral cover.

CURIOUS: did you go with black paint because you liked it OR could you tell during paint-stripping that the original color was black?
@PawlikLab
@PawlikLab 6 ай бұрын
It was hard to tell the original color because there were many layers of primer as well as finish coats and black was among them. But I prefer black for cast iron over Charleston green or other colors (white is the worst).

Joe - Ianthella basta is my favourite species - glad to see it is alive and well in the Solomons and in relatively clear waters - in southern PNG where I described all the new species from, they were in very murky conditions - what a spot! and all the oxidative states showing all the colours. PNG is the only place I have seen lime green Michelle

Really nice footage, congratulations. Are you using the OM-D E-M1? On a backscatter video they say it is not suited for video below 15ft. I’m thinking about buying that one or the OM-D E-M10 and it would be mostly for video. Do you recommend it for video? Thank you
@PawlikLab
@PawlikLab 8 ай бұрын
Yes, I've been using the OM-D EM1 for years, just moved up to the OM-1. If you use video lights (and who doesn't?) the backscatter criticism doesn't apply -- I get great color saturation with Olympus cameras at all depths. Just look at the videos on my channel.

I had an opportunity to purchase this exact Fiske aquarium from an antique dealer upstate NY about a decade ago. It needed major restoration which I could’ve done but I didn’t really have the space for it at the time

Was it Joan Bogart? She has collected and sold several of these tanks and is an expert in decorative cast iron pieces. Search her name and you can find her antique store online.

@@PawlikLab No, it was in a small “antique emporium” in Nyack, NY which is no longer there. The tank needed the motor replaced and all the glass panels as well. Aside from it being mostly disassembled all the parts were there even the boy with the umbrella which was amazing. There was another place further upstate in Hudson, NY that sold mainly antique aquariums & bird cages. I did purchase a few pieces from him; 1 Victorian and 1 Art Nouveau tank and several amazing cages, he had great things, all fully restored. That was more like 23 years ago and Hudson has become totally gentrified since then. The days of finding great things anywhere remotely near NYC are over! I will check out Joan Bogart, thx!

that was from 2017 i saw no updated dives from that area. has the reefs recovered after 7 years? i live in Florida and they are reseeding the Florida keys with some amazing results. the corals seem to develop a tolerance to higher temps after successful generations are bred. of course that is the US and not the middle east. Tourism is their life blood there. they better hope they come back.
@PawlikLab

Thanks for the comments - there is no commercial diving on the Saudi side; we were there with special research permission, and I expect things have not gotten better as seawater temperatures have only increased. As for the Florida Keys, this past summer has devastated all the restoration efforts of the past decade - very few corals have survived.

Hi @scubaguy5389 - much of this video compares 2017 (vibrant reefs) with 2023 (degraded). Also, this might be of interest - "After mass coral die-off, Florida scientists rethink plan to save ailing reefs" - Four years ago, NOAA unveiled a $100 million coral rescue moonshot. "Mission: Iconic Reefs" would re-plant half a million hand-reared coral colonies over 2 decades. But in 2023, a record-breaking underwater heat wave swept the Caribbean and southern Florida, and killed most of the transplanted colonies.

Florida’s reef faced many damaging events before because of the climate change, but due to the scientific research that used to be occurred frequently in US, they could know the reasons, but eventually no one can control the global warming

By the way, I did a survey in the northern and the southern parts of the Egyptian Red Sea in November 2023 and I found many coral colonies have been recovered in the north more than the south, I did the survey before bleaching, through, and after. I think this happened as the reef experiences high temperatures
