Molto interessante. C'è forse un aspetto razzista nel bianco positivo contro nero negativo nelle lingue africane?
@TheStoriesEater8 күн бұрын

Magari li aggiungerò a qualche video breve in inglese.

Hi Rahel! Nice video! I agree with a lot of what you said. I am very interested in medieval history, but sometimes I find obstacles in finding the information I need. Most of the time it is due to the exorbitant prices of the publications. It's very frustrating to find a source of knowledge at your fingertips but inaccessible due to the expense involved...😡😞

Thanks! Yeah, that's a massive issue and I hope academia will change it, but unless the publishing system is turned upside down, I don't think it will change anytime soon...

Happy Birthday! This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen but I quite enjoyed it. I cannot follow directions so here is more than three: Orlando (the 1994 Sally Potter/Tilda Swinton), Diva, Amélie, Wings of Desire, Apartment Zero, High Heels, All About My Mother, Last Life in the Universe, Intimate Strangers (aka Confiances Trops Intimes), Home of the Brave (Laurie Anderson concert film), Brazil, A Tale of Two Sisters, The City of Lost Children, Hairspray (original John Waters version), My Private Idaho, Duck Weed, Hail Caesar! Also the first THREE Bourne films (Identity / Supremacy / Ultimatum) make an excellent trilogy. The lat two (Bourne Legacy & Jason Bourne) are skippable. Also these mixed families are fun! My first trip to Italy was to attend the wedding of an Italian Physicist and a Turkish-American Political Scientist :) I hope you had a wonderful birthday and maybe a couple of the films in my list will be new and enjoyable.

I'm surprised most alien languages don't use frequencies outside the human hearing range.
@TheStoriesEater2 ай бұрын
That would totally make sense! I suppose it's just due to the practicalities of developing an alien language for a TV show for instance, or the simple fact that we create stuff based on something we know (or at least we draw some inspiration from it). Which is why even books lack truly surprising alien languages despite having all the potential to do so. I looove to see challenging and unexpected options related to language and sci-fi in general

Is there any tools to produce word pronunciation sounds? ( probably just feed it into any text to speech generator may do it not sure ) i am thinking to get some karaoke songs ( without the words but with a familiar tune, so your mind would go to the translations automatically ) the layer the conlang words over the top of the tune ( to fill the song with words in a fictional language ) i did some coding that would make a nice language ( it was simple just reverse all characters in the normal languages spelling of words, except for the first and last characters of the word so is still human readable without a dictionary or learning it off by heart a whole thing ) it even operated in a browser plugin for Firefox, for instance the word human is hamun ( still quite pronounceable in sounds, for a nicer language construction ) the problem with this mechanism is 3 letter words come out the same ( so i just added code to add the center letter again ) so that cat would be caat, dog would be doog, 'the' would be thhe, etc ( still keeping the human readability factor )
@TheStoriesEater2 ай бұрын
I guess the conlang would still be roughly based on English (in terms of syntax), if that's your goal it sounds great. If you want to differentiate 3-letter words you could switch the consonants at the beginning and end of the word (not sure if it would work with your code), even something like "g" to "k" or whatever you like as long as it's consistent in the 3-letter word scenario. You could also leave them as they are and play around with other elements, such as the word order. Regarding a tool to produce sounds I'm not sure what you mean apart from test to speech generators, as you said; I'm not aware of other tools you could use for it, I hope someone who does will pop up and help us both 😅
@StephenPhantomАй бұрын
@@TheStoriesEater yeah just reversing the centre part of the word makes it still readable to me, for instance The Stories Eater would be Th#e Seirots Eetar ( see how its still readable, but some words need some thought ) also for 3 letter words i had the idea to add a hash symbol so The would become Th#e ( the centre letter gets a symbol added like a hash ) why do this, because the translation program can locate these patterns and replace them back to the original text ( while still retaining human english readablity ) so yeah thats my goal, a lightweight easily programmable language that can be read easily by the reader with only a little thought on some words, ( i read somewhere that the brain only needs the letters and not the order they are in, at least that works for me, if the first and last letters are kept the same as the original ) thanks for your input !!!

Thanks, Rahel. You asked if anyone has used Vulgarlang. I have the paid version and I recommend people getting it. The free version's pretty good too but you get more features with pro and can create more words. You can tell it what sounds and grammar rules you want or use a preset "give me a language like X" feature. You can also save languages. It took me a while to get used to it though and you have to do a lot of tweaking to get the language just right. Even then, I wouldn't rely on it entirely, I'd want to be more creative. It makes a great helper, though.
@TheStoriesEater2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Vulgarlang! When I checked it out it felt almost game-like or a way to gamify work, which is awesome! I haven't found any similar tools related to language and I praise those who made it 'cause it's a great idea, despite not being perfect 😊

Having just bought the first 5 series on DVD to watch them again, I find more time and attention can be paid to the background stories of each character. It's sometimes very, very moving, partly because the characters are so well portrayed by some fine acting, but also that the tension between two generations, that is, those whose nature was deeply affected by experiences in WW2 as with Inspector Thursday, and Morse, who is representative of the 1960s generation. On the second viewing, I noticed how often there are references to Thursday's traumatic and life-changing experiences during WW2. This adds a deeply resonating distaste in him towards evil and those who commit terrible crimes. With Morse, there are some enigmatic aspects to his character which come into relief more when watching it again. He clearly has a problem expressing his feelings towards women, and his mishandling of moments with Joan Thursday, when he could have reached for her, are really tragic. The wonderful bittersweet theme tune now takes on a much more poignant role than it did in the Inspector Morse series. His poor timing is crucial to losing her, and to her marrying a man she doesn't really love, simply for a secure, but more dull and conservative life. Joan is a tragic figure at the end herself, because she becomes 'middle aged' before her time, and actually more like her parents than she expected earlier, surrendering her daring and sparkle after the failure of her attempt to be different by running away from home. I was overwhelmed by this turn out of events, and moved, because it is all too believable. It's just a brilliant series and I think, takes the whole Morse project to a new level, beyond the original series.
@TheStoriesEater2 ай бұрын
Well said! I didn't talk about these details to avoid spoilers, just in case someone watched this video before watching Endeavour. I totally agree with your observations on the trauma Thursday must have experienced and how this affects his behaviour (a bit of violence if needed, but still respecting his values). I cry every time I watch Morse missing his chance to be happy. I never liked Joan but I had hoped for a different ending (not knowing what happens in the original series I had no clue 😅); I guess this trauma was necessary for Morse's character to develop as it did, just like with his past and change of careers. I even loved what they did with Jakes' character, a beautiful arc, as I hated him at the beginning but slowly understood him. It's such a well crafted TV show!

An alien race that is capable of FTL communication will NOT be using some bullshit caveman language for discourse between each other... Their communication will be over neuro-link and not via the same orifice they use for breathing and eating... Their language will be highly efficient and RARELY used. If I am a living creature capable of FTL communication, there's very little I need to learn. Almost everything - I could logically derive it myself faster than asking. Whatever is left of the alien language (for example for communication with machines) will be like our mathematical language, EG - Gödel's completeness theorem: (∀x. R(x,x)) → (∀x∃y. R(x,y)) For the aliens, the above will be as simple as "The letter O makes an O-sound like how your mouth does an O when you read the letter out". Their language will enable even more abstract and complex language, such that our minds cannot comprehend. Therefore, their language will be completely useless for communication between us and them. Like trying to talk to a bacteria...

Premed education is fake. Calculus, physics etc are irrelevant to medicine. Premeds and medical students never learn nutrition, epidemiology, toxicology, stress management = the most important controllable variables in health. School becomes a guild barrier. School also is used to train people in a bogus pattern. Eg. to train a doctor to sell drugs, rather than to understand disease.

Il lavoro dei linguisti consiste ora nell'osservazione sistematica e nello studio dei vari fenomeni linguistici in modo da dare delle solide basi scientifiche alle loro ipotesi.
@emdee313 ай бұрын
Well, it's not considered a perfect science because of empirical data. So you can propose multiple hypothesis with equal degree of certainty. Like for example, The "proto indo European language" exists because one guy, sir William Jones in 1786 kickstarted the argument because he refused to believe that Sanskrit, as elegant as it is, can be better suited as an information transfer medium (it has declensions for nouns so you can never confuse the subject, object, etc irrespective of the position of the words in the sentence) than Greek or Latin. On the other hand, i have so so many eastern linguistic scholars swearing on their very life that Sanskirti, Tamil and other languages developed independently. So yeah. Unless it's not mathematical, it's not a core science.

I can attest to the contributions of Professor Yvonne Treis , who works extensively with Africans (Focus in Ethiopia), showing ease, commitment, and care in her connection with the local community. She collaborates closely with research assistants in Ethiopia, who are well-trained under her guidance. As her assistant, I know she approaches the research assistants and the community with care, respect, love and highest possible professionalism! Professor Yvonne is not only deeply connected to her research topics but also to the entire community, earning the affectionate title "Faranjichchúta Kambaatichchuta," meaning "White or Western Kambaata."
