Since this is really a score generator and a stat generator and not a true hands-on game, and it still takes a half hour, well, for about a half hour longer than that, I can get a full, smooth-flowing, statistically accurate game play experience with Mark Vecellio's HOOPS or Replay Basketball.

You're right in many respects, Guy. RSB has a different way of generating a basketball score. No player cards and no play action cards. However, there are many "seasonal" and "part time" basketball fans who like this streamlined approach to playing a game. Different strokes for different folks. Have a good one! 🏀

Love the Corner Rounding Minute! Thanks Rod for another great video -- you make the games look so interesting! I downloaded the Demo which includes a couple 2010-11 teams and there are some results highlighted in green or yellow, but no explanation in the Rules what this means. In your example game I don't see any highlighted cells, however, and I'm most interested in those years (60's, 70's, 80's). Am also interested in the college version, but the packages of teams are not appealing to me.

Thanks for the comments, Dusty. The color coded player names (in addition to tiny little "raised numbers") are part of the Advanced Game as far as keeping more detailed stats are concerned. In turn, I haven't tried them yet. RSB is an alternative rendition of a tabletop basketball game. I consider it more of a "results oriented" sim that lacks some the flow/ball movement of a Hoops or Strat type of game. It's still fun - you just don't have the individual player cards and action cards to work with. It's reasonabiy priced and is definitely worth looking into. And you've got to love and appreciate the corner rounding minute, lol. Take care. 🏀

Hi Rod, does your Corner Rounder work with one card at a time? or multiple cards? I have one that works well, but it only does a card at a time and is noisy.

RSB is a different animal, Larry. I find there are two "high points" in the game. One is seeing the final score and the other is seeing how all of the stats play out. Of course, those high points would coincide if I use the electronic scoresheet briefly presented in the video. That will be another video in itself. An corner rounding segments are proudly becoming a regular occurrence (lol). Have a good one. 🏀

Really love this game because it's just different, I appreciate how it builds a narrative with each 3 minute segment. If the dice come up for a using a mod in the final 3 minute segment I do that because I feel a team could get cold or have to deal with a team that picks it up on defense in the final minutes. I just wish Marco has put out some more recent seasons out there.

Great points. Certainly, RSB is unlike other games and might not be for the tabletop board gaming traditionalist. No player cards, just team sheets. Easy to print out for games and easy to travel with. RSB might be a great "travel game" as I don't have room in my trailer for all the game cards of typical games. Lots of good things to build on in this game ... but in it's current state I believe it would quickly become a boring dice-rolling contest. Directly consulting varying player distribution tables, maybe by quarter, defense or type opponent, would make this a lot more interesting. To be fair bball is such a difficult game to simulate but this game is a little too pre-determined. Foul trouble, height advantages, rebounding skills, player strengths & weaknesses or strategy just not a factor.

Attention Rod, or others, is there a standard/preferred mechanism to decide when to Shoot or Advance? cheers.
@redfanrod
@redfanrod 12 күн бұрын
Great question, southpaw. From what I've read in the instructions, it's preferred that you "Advance" the ball when you have a player with a "secondary" field goal range. This keeps said player from shooting too many shots during a game and provides an opportunity to get the high scorers to shoot the most, as they should. I don't see a lot of instruction on whether I should shoot right away if, say, Abdul-Jabbar gets the ball. In essence, it gives the coach a lot of latitude as to who will get the most shots during a game. I this game, I know I went to Larry Nance too much but, with a 1-52 chance of scoring without an Advance, why not give him the rock? I guess you can also look at who's guarding the guy and determine whether to shoot or not, but my conclusion is that Statis Pro is a more casual game than that. It emphasizes game flow and fun over statistical accuracy in many respects. Assists are sort of lucky unless you get one following the use of the range on the passing player's "Assist" range. Only total rebounds are rated here, so there is no differentiation between offensive and defensive boards. I see why the game is still enjoyed by many casual game players who aren't hellbent on purely accurate stats (like turnovers in addition to the other stats I mentioned). Cheers! 🏀

Like what you did with the setup…and some corner rounder company is missing an opportunity by not sponsoring your videos! I only play seasons from Jordan and prior - using Base 8 and a helper vice FACs - but this game really checks the boxes for me. Blocks, steals, defense, reasonable footprint, point guard importance (assist ratings), and an easily implementable fatigue system. Combine this with Phil Graham freely releasing all his seasons, more than 10 players per team, the ability to easily create your own sets, its reasonable ability to play college teams, and the freely available ATR to decrease footprint further for those so inclined…this game is higher on my list than several of the more “popular” games being sold today.

Mathematics could be rearranged to flip team lineups. Thanks for presenting! You have a knack for simplifying and explaining game mechanics. Would like to see a game implement strategy of some sort. There are advantages to bigger or quicker lineups, or working the ball inside or playing team defense. Fascinating to go through these various game mechanics, though. I will say that I don't think we've landed on an ideal way to simulate basketball in this hobby. But there's lots to take from this game.

Thanks for the comments. The creator of ECS was definitely on the right track. Having FACs in 1968 was quite an innovation. The substitution method is slowing and similar to old APBA Basketball, where you re-calculate the settings on EVERY substitution. ECS tried to rectify re-writing the stat "ranges" for shots, rebounds, assists and fouls with the individual range cards but there are still more calculations to be made. The game plays pretty well overall if you don't make subs too often. Take care. 🏀

I cherish these guides, Larry. So many great stats and still a great reference tool! Like you, I spent endless hours (for years) checking on how many times Wilt scored more than 50 points in a game and how many times he had more than 40 rebounds in a game. Wilt still dominates this book! Have a good one. 🏀

Does anyone recall T. H. E. Basketball game, circa 1970? My buddy played a mini season w/full stats. I seem to remember the game came in a thick package. No individual cards were in the set.

I love the input, Ken Castro. I hope that somebody can bring T.H.E. Basketball to the surface, just like we did with ECS Pro Basketball, which I will be uploading to my Tabletop Basketball Board Games page on Facebook. Coming soon! Take care. 🏀
