Yeah I love freecad, it's a discipline because it doesn't forgive error. But that is one of its best features, you have to think about what you are doing. Mango jelly always calls it a work flow, and that is the right way to think about it. One of my personal favourite workbenches is spreadsheet because you can take complete control of the dimensions of your sketches from one page and watch the changes in an instant.

I only just found this, and you're done with it after a year? Shame, it was just what I was looking for. 😥 And I'm in the UK not the EU... If anyone in the UK bought one and doesn't plan on using it, I'd be interested for the right price!

This is a very neat mix of old technology and new. Any trouble with the strength of the prints? What did you do the prints with? Simple PLA or PTeG?

Thanks. I think it's PLA, it is pretty strong as long as it stays cool.

I'm just switching from Fusion 360 to FreeCAD. The next version that comes out will be simplifying a lot of things and save a lot of time. The thing I dislike Fusion most is you have to upgrade every time there's a new upgrade which means you have to learn how to reuse the program, I mostly just do my modeling in the winter when the weather is bad and this can take some time to relearn so look forward to having a disk based program that I can learn and it won't be changing till I want to.

I originally used AutoCad then switched to pro/engineer, then to Solidworks for decades. All excellent programs. I tried getting into Freecad a couple times over the years, the solver is definitely a weak point (and definitely a strong point in Solidworks). Then I had a job change and worked with Fusion for a couple months, I swear it’s nothing but a refined version of AutoCad + AME (the advanced modeling extension). Once I comprehended that, Fusion was much more approachable. The solver is the weakest yet, well, AutoCad was never truly successful implementing parametric constraints. The solver has to be the weakest in the industry, though the most capable as far as Autodesk products go. Fusion timeline is almost never a good idea to meddle with, in fact you can turn the history mode off completely and just use the program like you’re sculpting: anything you do is permanently captured and completely irreversible! Solidworks is a superior tool, but Fusion is indeed highly approachable, and surprisingly full-featured, despite the pitiful solver. Freecad is getting better and better all the time. I will probably switch over completely to Freecad.

Also there is a new "Ondsel" that is basically a cover over a Freecad. Which costs some 15$/mo or so, but it is nicer in all aspects.

Changing or deleting random stuff in the past completely breaks the entire model, even though nothing after that point has any connections to the changes... Worst of all, the errors it gives are either nonsensical or too vague. Some stuff that is expected to work flawlessly by default needs crappy workarounds in order to get half decent results, and lets not mention how crappy assembly and part alignment is...

I have a P1S and a Flashforge AM5 Pro and I would say that both of these printers are pretty much on par with each other. P1S is slightly larger build plate, but I rarely print things that are over 200mm anyway. I mostly use them for printing functional parts so I have no real use for an AMS.

If you have the X1C you should just print ABS and ASA. Brush on some wolfbite or nano polymer and your prints will stick like a mofo.

@0:23 for anyone else watching, this is not a good way to press and bearings. You never want to put force through a bearing into a race when seating it, it can put dents into the race that cause premature failure. For typical deep groove roller bearings, you make a shell/tube that only contacts the race you are driving against. If it’s on the shaft you make a shell that only contacts the inner ring. If you are seating it into a bore you make a shell that only contacts the outer ring. So for these tapered roller bearings, just leave the roller pack out-of-the-way entirely and use a block of wood or aluminum to press the outer race into the bore (which is where he ended up at @0:25 anyways)

I've just watched some videos of it but the assembly process seems a bit hampered... In Autodesk Inventor you just click the surfaces, planes or edges of the different parts that you want to align with each other.. instead of having to select some coordinate systems in the parts, from a menu...

Exactly, just a couple of week ago I got my lathe here and even today (year 2024) the China factories are having same issues ! what is really frustrating to me is, the factories have all the resources and quality raw materials the need to do it right yet they chose to cheap out on stuff like this... yes from day one I had to start modifying mine since I do not like at all bad precision machines .. next for me is the cross slide that even with the adjusting of those 3 screws will not do the job -- wayyy too much slack

To avoid future problems do not use heat with heat guns to expand the metals because the lubrication on the spindle bearings will evaporate.

I clamped rod with bearing on it in parallel with spindle, and put a steel rod in tool holder collet. Glad i had universal holder with whole set of diameters, had place for imporovisation. So losened drawbar a little and powered machine. Then put force on the tip of the rod with the bearing. That seemed to do nothing, but then tried pulling toll holder with crowbar and it poped. Earlier crowbar was not enough. So im not sure what actually worked, but now im relieved a lot😅

You can just change the color in the Figma file and order it yourself from JRPanel or print it locally and laminate - but then you won't have the embossing.

Hmm it seems like the whole point of a parametric modeler is that you can go back and make changes without breaking subsequent operations.

FreeCAD ist the best example of an open source (and free) project gone wrong. It has the potential of being an exceptional tool BUT in reality its slow, buggy and unstable. I use it frequently and I am still glad it exists.

I used freecad for quite some time, then learned onshape and am kind of spoiled with how good it works compared to freecad. But I have ideas I want not to yet be in the public domain which if you don't subscribe to onshape you're screwed. Freecad can make a great product I'd pay for if they address some usability and have some real ux improvements and look at videos like yours to improve because it's so close to being that replacement for some of us

Thanks for the info, I'm looking to get one so I don't know about most of the issues you mentioned at the end, but the minimum 0.1mm depth of cut might be able to be made smaller with a different encoder or servo motor ( or both ) , if the servo and encoder only has 400 steps then upping to 800 steps will allow 0.05mm , or if trying to hit an imperial measurement like 5/8" ( 15.875mm ) you could always set the final pass to hit 16mm , then turn the Y axis off and Indicate the cross slide for the remaining 0.0625mm, that would have to be a high resolution indicator though :) Or modify the leadscrew for the cross slide to be a finer pitch
