Honestly, I think the big window in kitchen is still a cool idea, and it's sad that it went out of fashion.

If all the wood is butted up tight, why doesn't it warp and bow with expansion? In the west, we leave expansion or "swell" gaps at the edges (hidden by skirting or trim), to leave room for the wood to expand without creating new forces anywhere; how come this apparently isn't an issue here?

The craftsmanship of the flooring looks good but, the wood looks like cheap pinewood and, the flooring panels look too thin to be load bearing.

A well laid floor with beautiful timber is like a valuable piece of furniture. It matures with time and is always enjoyable to look at.

Superb! I adore Japanese Style Entrances. I wish western builders could adopt it into their designs. Thank you, and all other Traditional Craftsman and their Masters - worldwide, for preserving these cultural treasures and techniques. To many others have already been lost to time.

This looks wonderful! If you don't mind me asking: how do you take into account the expansion and contraction of the wood, if leaving gaps is not an option? I don't see any plinths around the borders either. Thanks again for showing us your craftmanship.

You've inspired me on my next project. I recently acquired some walnut, poplar, and fir from a friend. I aim to make a coffee table similar to this design.

11:19 that was a cool access panel. You should make the access panel so that no large people can get inside. That way they will be dependent upon short thin people in order to repair anything.

This is beautiful, wouldn't there be some benefits of leaving room, say like a 1/4 inch of some foam for shifting foundation/heat/cold so the wood doesn't buckle ?
