I had the privilege of working with a Japanese finish carpenter in Hawaii for 7 years. Their attention to detail is sometimes frustrating for a professional carpenter from the mainland but the knowledge I gained was incredible…

I always look forward to Shoyan’s videos. Having worked as a carpenter years ago, and now pursuing woodworking as a hobby, he brings so much integrity and craftsmanship to carpentry. Here in the US it is a mere manual job with little skill or status. Shoyan is a craftsman who puts honor and integrity into his work. We need this attitude in the US - not just from the craftsmen, but from public appreciation of skilled work well done. Bravo, keep these videos coming!

Most folks can't afford skill of this level --these aren't average houses he builds. You are correct, though, that *no* houses in the 'States are built to this standard. I was a carpenter, too, and Shoyan's framing work is nearly to the standard of cabinetmaking. Incredible craft.

I doubt anyone noticed this (except for other carpenters), but before undercutting the round column, he prep’d a scrap board. He used his power planer to remove a tiny amount from the surface of the scrap board, the equivalent thickness of the kerf of the hand saw blade. Perhaps 1 or 2 mm? This ensured the tightest possible fit of the floor boards around the column. He filmed it, but didn’t include that in the narration. This is the work of a perfectionist.

Shoyun- There is nothing wrong with being claustrophobic. If you feel yourself getting ill, take a moment. Stop everything you are doing, breathe, and remember that you are in a place of safety. Speak to your doctor about breathing exercises you can do when you feel that feeling start. It will help a lot. You are not less of a person for that, you are not faint hearted. You are just You. :)

I love watching these, its so cathartic. Also, the Japanese tools seem so much better than English ones. From the pull saws to pull planes it just seems like a much better way to cut or smooth things than having to "push". I'm also in awe at the use of a circular saw; so much confidence. I've only used one a few times and not only do they scare me I ended up spending a lot of time attaching cutting guides (using scraps of wood) to get the cuts as perfect as possible, checking and double checking, and still made the mistake of not taking into account the width of the blade.

I am a finish carpenter sir in the States and I see you use a lot of Cypress? I made an 8’ door out of a Cypress Tree that once belonged to my customer ? It was a tree in his old house front yard that he cut down had milled and stacked / stickers then years later he hired me to make it! I made good money on it because his new rough jams were perfect hardly any shimming! Thk you so much for your hard work to make these videos Sir!

@@Spencer-e2v I was requested to build this door for a couple who built a huge post beam barn and then the hired an architect , engineer & contractor to build a two bedroom , two bath house with an upper story inside the Post beam barn! They decided that a custom door was needed on the N/W entry into the closest point between the Barn and house! It was a very custom build however I only built that one door? The General Contractor had his own Finish Carpenters ! I do enjoy you videos because I learn from them so much about doing very good clean work! You and I ; I think are about the same age? I know you hv years of experience as I do but I think we are both about 25yrs old ? Right? Kidding I am 65 and feel great probably retire like my dad at 80 God willing!
