The ad spot was nicely amusing, even if as an Australian, I don't really get the whole pumpkin spice thing. This year I've been in a very busy season with my family and have only been able to do any kind of writing or creative activity on weekends. Once I'm over the end-of-year exhaustion, I plan to make next year more focussed.

AI is great for making apps to do one-off tasks that can be useful to authors. I did something similar for making fantasy lexicons with simple letter swaps. Another app tells time differences between worlds connected by a portal. Yet another displays text with toggle switches to add/remove puns, cursing, and romance. There are so many new avenues to explore.

Great podcast! I've been following Wendy, after recently discovering her channel about memoir writing. She is a very inspirational character, almost exploding with enthusiasm. Really enjoyed listening to this. So refreshing to hear two intelligent adults discuss an interesting subject, with respectful interactions, I.e. not talking over the top of each other, and listening with interest. Brilliant post!

Thanks, Kevin. I've been a fan of/follower of Wendy Dale for a few years, and she was instrumental in helping me form the structure for my own memoir, coming out in Jan 2025. Heels to Hiking Boots: Exploring the World to Find the Way Home. I like your example of the chicken soup and saltines as relatable. I think one point that needs to be highlighted is that a memoir, as Wendy says, must have a change in the character. In my book, it's from being a callous, non-caring kid, to a caring adult. Learning to love oneself before you can truly love others. Other themes of change might be from feeling you don't have a voice, to learning to speak up. These big changes are what we readers want to experience with the memoirist. The details of their lives, the things that happened, that demonstrate those journeys can run the gamut from wild adventures to mundane, but they all have to illustrate moments in that journey of change. A well-told story allows the reader to experience the same transformation as the author. Good luck on your own memoir journey. I, for one, would love stories of archaeology and adventure, interwoven with something vital you learned along the way. How did those adventures change you? Thanks again. I don’t think you can underestimate the tone of your voice for transmitting that same resonance of reason we all crave so much these days… just sayin’ (I was a fan from way back for that reason… before I had time to prioritize much actual listening. You were down to earth, honest, balanced, reflective… all the good things in the world.) And you’re right… hearing your voice just reflecting is grounding, unifying and speaks common sense. We hear that. 🎊

I have an AKA question for you, well maybe two. First, what equipment do you use for the podcast? For example, which microphone, what lighting, and which iPhone and its supporting arm do you have? Second, it’d be interesting to see the photos of your writing space. But maybe that is a bit of a cheeky ask. Just curious FYI you may know me in Substack as The Everyday Solopreneur AKA Mike😁

Mike! I'm catching up on comments (I really need to work out a way to keep up with these here... it just falls off my radar). Ok, since you had to wait two months for a response, let me answer right here: For podcasting, I use a Samson Q9U microphone, which I've loved. Great quality at a good price. I recently put a small logo sticker on it, to make it completely my own. :) I use a 100 LED light panel that I've had for several years for my lighting, and I bounce that from the ceiling over my desk. My office has a slanted soffit that works perfectly as a reflector/diffusor. Without it, I'd either have to use a soft box (which I do own) or some kind of reflector/flag. Or I'd need to just invest in a more modern light kit... which I've considered. Finally, I use my iPhone 14 max for a camera. I used to use my MacBook's built-in camera, but Apple introduced their Continuity feature a couple of years ago, and the camera on my iPhone can shoot in 4K. It ended up being perfect. Explaining how it's mounted is a little tricky... but let's give it a shot. I use a 42" Samsun Monitor/TV that's mounted on an arm on the wall above my desk. I have the desk at an angle, so the corner behind the TV is open. Back there I have a light stand that has my LED panel mounted on it. And attached to that is a sort of jointed arm I made from a few different clamps and camera mounts, as well as a magsafe mount for the phone. It's a little hard to describe... I'll have to work out a way to share a photo of it. But when it's time for me to do a podcast or record something, I mount the iPhone to this, swing it up so it's at eye level, and for good measure I run a charing cable to it from a USB port in a powerblock I have on my desk. That keeps the Phone from dying during a session... I'd have to go for several hours to run it down to zero (which has happened in the past). If it's just a real quick recording, no need for the cable, but I do it out of habit at this point. So there's some setup for every session, but it's very quick. And when I'm done, everything swings out of the way, and I get an unobstructed view of my giant monitor. I'll try to get a full view of the writing space at some point, but for now, if you can see this image on Facebook, you can at least see a hint of the podcasting setup. In that space under the monitor you can see the "arm" i built, in it's "not in use" stage: scontent-dfw5-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/467430598_10160695468927076_6510355864029783248_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=127cfc&_nc_ohc=5kxMKRlTjUgQ7kNvgHZdCtF&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-2.xx&_nc_gid=AunXe2d4LYSWJxTP5zWCIXQ&oh=00_AYDk8IvzmBOG-ta-X2jLYgjhCuDwQ1nVTR4tl3XGzAsNJg&oe=677B193C

Reorganizing my bookcases while listening to this - three hours would be great! A couple things that stood out: - The Mayans also have a legend about the gods destroying humanity via a flood. They created beings three times. I forget the first destruction, the second was a flood. The third creation were declared good - aka humans. - Unsolved Mysteries did do aliens. I had nightmares as a child based on seeing an episode featuring blue glowing beings. I was convinced they were following me so throughout the day, I'd walk in circles because they had to follow each step and could only go so fast. I'd take steps in bed before falling asleep so they wouldn't be able to catch up at night. Needless to say, my parents were not impressed my nan let me watch it. 🤣

I used to be a chronic outliner, and I would immediately lose interest in writing the first draft, but I wrote four books that way. However, I soon realised that I couldn't keep writing like that. Like you, I used the Dean Wesley Smith method, and writing my last story was a dream. However, my next few books have been difficult to write. I've started multiple projects and finished none, but I'm feeling down about my writing career and ability. Naturally, this negative self-talk has destroyed my productivity. Thanks for sharing this, it really helped me.

Hey Kevin, I've been listening to the Wordslinger podcast and I just wanted to reach out and say thanks for the transparency in the last couple of episodes. The episode about pantsing/outlining hit me deep in the feels. I've been spinning my wheels for so long now - haven't released a new book since 2020. I've been using the pandemic and my cover design business and my divorce and my "day job" and a whole host of other things as excuses for my lack of "doing" anything. I've been in a funk that was borderline depression, putting on the happy face, pushing ahead with mindless "work" hoping it would all just work out somehow. Nick once told me that he thought you and I were kindred spirits and after listening to what you've been going through, I think he might be right. I can't say for sure, but listening to you "work" through your things on the podcast seems to be kindling the fire again. There's a small spark and maybe, just maybe, if I take care of it, it will become a flame again. Anyway, I say all this to say, "thanks." It has meant the world to me.

Thanks, I needed this today. I'm trying to write some fiction, but I keep tapping out as soon as the bell rings. I'm stuck on the idea that I need an idea in my head. This leads to creative avoidance (where I pour my creativity into avoidance.) I start shopping for a solution, but the solution is to stop shopping for a solution.

Creating on demand can be tough. We're asking a lot from that part of us that just wants to experience the joy of telling a good story. We're telling it to get to work. So do yourself a favor-let your creative side just play every now and then. The work part will come easier when you let yourself have time to enjoy being creative without the agenda.

I'm behind, so I just today listened to this on my podcatcher, and although I have already subscribed on KZbin, I wanted to come leave a comment. I appreciate your transparency and support you in your quest! I also agree 100% on the loyalty thing at the end. I was fortunate to have 34 years teaching at one college (which still amazes me), and I have to say they were quite supportive of me, demonstrating the kind of loyalty that is absent in most places. You certainly can't count on that. I would suggest thinking of your employer as your primary client-that helps you give full measure in your work, but anyone in business knows you don't want to depend on one client. Diversify. The whole W2 vs. 1099 distinction is artificial, designed to keep us trapped. Don't fall for it! Have your W2 income, fine, but you are ALWAYS self-employed, no matter how the IRS classifies you. Your take on these things was one reason among many I was happy to have you on my own podcast. Thank you!

@@WordslingerPodcast lol I'm part machine on my father's side too 😂 but I agree, taking the time to care for me now is much easier than being forced to deal with burnout because I didn't fill my tank before hand. Jumping over from Spotify to say that I'm really enjoying the conversational form you're taking with this podcast. It's a nice change up from other writing podcasts, and creates that sense of a parasocial writing community. Here's my AKA: I'm embracing the slow build and bootstrap publishing method (thanks to you for pointing out the validity of that method in a 2OBooks video I watched). I have one book out and one coming out this fall. I hear advice all the time on how to grow faster, sooner, etc, but I'd love to know what you suggest when my focus is working to reach those specific people who are going to love my books, and not trying to make seven figures in seven weeks. 😜 Thanks for the great content!

Great question! The key to stable and continuous growth is consistency. In terms of marketing, one thing you'll want to do is ensure that whatever marketing method you pick (social media, advertising, podcasting... whatever), do it with regularity and consistency. And, adding to that, be authentic! Meaning, make sure that you are presenting your potential reader with not only the kind of content they expect from you, but content that is real and relevant. I hope that helps!
