The Sirus is quite high aspect and does not have a great stall speed, although yes probably great for dock start where you’re already up. Have you considered a mid aspect foil? Say the Curve H 3XLH at 1918cm2.

@@jimmyjones5787 if I could I would get the huge curve but this was all that was available last year and it’s what I have here on island with no change of importing anything else. I have the Sirus 3XL and I tried that last month and got zero lift. My board it too wide so I need more lift to compensate. Maybe as I get better technique I will be able to use smaller foils. I have the fluid H XXL (1750 ) which I’m hoping to try on the waves but for now I’m happy to try and get more longer runs on the 5XL

Have you tried the fluid H yet? I’m would give it a go just in case. I’m in a similar position to you. Trying to use a Sirus XL and getting no where. I think the same area (1700cm2) but with a mid aspect curve H or fluid H might work better. I weigh 85kg using an 8,2 Cruzader so shouldn’t need a bigger foil than that. Great Video! Three months since a switch to Goofy and back on track - maybe - getting the board to bounce a bit but I always stop forward momentum when it starts to really lift. I am starting to wonder if more volume might help. My board is 8'6" x 19.75" with 122 liters which seemed right for 85kg in wetsuit. With more volume = less drag (to a point) maybe thicker board with more volume = more speed. I keep reading that 18" is the new top end on width as well. Quite a puzzle this has turned into. Good points on the lower pump frequency. Josh Ku said to not bounce around like an ape and I am pretty sure that is where I always end up.

@@clowngrowl2671 your board is perfect. It’s technique. I learned to do much faster shorter forward strokes which builds speed and keeps the board flatter. Small pumps of the foil reduces drag and gets the foil lifting. Once the foil starts to work and the board is on the surface e you then increase your cadence and try to get speed. I’m up now. Getting 50m at n the foil and even some paddle free pumps. Hoping to get a video together soon with my learning tips.

Loving it Lee, you are a true inspiration. Keep the good work up. Because of you I now can’t resist giving it a go on an 8ft x 22ins 155L Downwind Takoon Air Escape board I bought for light wind winging. (Yes, is great, and like you, the “downwinder” has now become my “go to” wingfoiling board!). Not expecting success but will be fun to go through the motions towards a flat water paddle up with the foils & lack of ability I already possess. So, for interest, how far off from where you are now do you think you would you be if you re-tried using your Armstrong HS1850 which is also what I have available? (Or do you think I should try with my bigger existing RRD 2400 Universal foil wing?). If it looks like I am getting close then I guess at that stage I could look at buying some better gear - perhaps one of the new Armstrong wings which I would hope could also double up as an even lighter wind wingfoil quiver?. I am 67 & just over 90kgs. Thanks

@@alastairpollard Hi mate. I would say that for me the 1850 HS is impossible to paddle up. I tried my 2400 CF and couldn’t get past 3 knots. I also tried my old Gong Curve XXL (2800 cm2) with the same result. Too much drag from a fat foil. I might have better success now I’m up and flying but even with my super high aspect foil it takes everything I’ve got. I would suggest you use your biggest foil with the longest mast you have and just practice slow perfect J strokes and leg squats. I’m hoping to get a new video out soon with my technique and drills to show what has worked for me. Ok. So it’s 7mph to engage your foil? All things considered. 🥂 doing great mate. Inspiration to us all 🎉 appears NEEDED speed to sustain engagement of the foil is noticeably higher 11km/hr 😢 (vs winging its 8 or 9km/hr)
@heliboy999fly
@heliboy999fly 26 күн бұрын
@@wingfoilrentals I think the foil is actually able to lift me at 4.5 mph but it’s at max AOA so it will either stall or cause huge drag. Going faster seems to give a really nice stable flow/ride which allows me to keep my balance and start to transition to pumping. Last month I was just doing huge power strikes with really aggressive pumps and I was getting onto the foil at 4.5-5.0 mph but stalling and falling most times. Since I’m now going for speed and micro pumps I’m much more stable and therefore able to go faster. Got up yesterday and did 6 pumps which felt epic. Winging takes a lot of weight off the foil so the formula means less lift needed for a given power and therefore less speed needed to gain required lift for a lighter weight. Think about when you are on a small foil and wing and the wind drops. You need monster pumping arms to get flying. This is similar.

I’ve gone less grunt and doubled my cadence with very small board bounces. It’s keeping me stable and I come up easier and can now fly 20+ metres on the foil. I tried a pure grunt run and came up on 5 paddle strokes but stalled and fell in. Faster, shorter paddle strokes help you put the foil further forward which gives you forward drive and stability. @@clowngrowl2671 well you m not there yet but from my progress recently it’s actually the basics. Forward plant of the paddle, efficient stroke, lean forward, don’t try to bounce too hard too early. Work the legs and get fitter. Get a GPS and see speeds with different stages. Also, get some film. It really helps to see what’s right and wrong

@@TheGalagona thanks. I’m going to do a day on and day off. The day off will just be very light paddle work but with pure technique practice. Every day is a gym day

You are nearly there - I really think you'd benefit from having a paddle buddy to push you over the line.
