I’ve seen your videos of using your 7ft 11 and I can see how much use you get from it in sometimes marginal winds. I think these boards will revolutionise lake sailing. Try using the wing handle next to the downwind rail technique. Really helps keeping you upright when getting on the board.

This is who I’ve been watching for technique. It’s very extreme and not subtle at all. Power and dynamic movement. A wing can be pumped forward and also up to unweight the board so different pump styles can be used. This is all from the paddle. Almost stalling the foil with the extreme angle but maximum lift and an extreme front foot down pump to recover the angle of attack. So many parts that need to be right. And fitness
@southcoastfoil17 күн бұрын
I cracked it recently. Things that helped: 1. Really lean forward and get low bending the knees and using your legs to help with the paddling (before you start pumping). Shorter paddle length helps (mine is just under head high) 2. High cadence and little pumps at the start. 3. Don't keep the paddle in the water too long, it shouldn't be in the water behind your front foot. (Again this helps stay forward 4. Keep the board flat, don't try to bring it up too steeply

Good Stuff - I've been trying for quite a bit myself and felt I finally had the balance and paddle technique and gear that should work, then I watched Gwen''s pump foil video on the Damien channel and came to a horrible conclusion - I need to switch my stance from regular to goofy if I ever want to do this - so its back to square one for me. What foil do you have? I was looking at the Gong Fluid 4XLH as my next move before this revelation happened but for now will be sticking with my current foil until I get goofy dialed in someday.
@heliboy999fly22 күн бұрын
That’s fairly drastic! Surely you knew what stance you was comfortable with at the start? Why do you feel you need to change? I have the Sirus 5XL. It’s a monster but at 106kg I need everything on my side.
@clowngrowl267122 күн бұрын
Oh its a really long story that starts in 1993 when I walked into a snowboard shop for the first time. I am fully left handed and left footed and when asked which stance felt more comfortable I went with dominant foot forward - as when skidding on ice - and from that came thirty plus years of regular foot surfing and snowboarding - and both sides for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Always felt fine. So when I started SUP thats where I was. But - it has become clear that for foiling, especially sup paddleup, I will benefit tremendously from the added power from my left side. And as a final nail - my right hip is now made out of metal since 10 years back and it seems like a smart move to slide that added stress to the other side going forward. Today I go for session three as a newly minted goofy footer. Hopefully I will soon be paddling straight once again.

How long is your paddle? It looks like it might be too long. Edit: ok I saw that you said it’s 3 inches over your height. Try it 2-3 inches below and bend at knees more. You’ll have a shorter stroke and higher cadence. The goal is to get your weight over and forward of the blade during the power phase of the stroke in sync and in sequence with the ‘bounce up’ of your board pump. For that brief moment when the board is bouncing up and you're effectively weightless, this is the moment when you're applying max pressure to the paddle to get you up and over the blade if that makes sense. A shorter paddle makes this all easier. Hope this helps.

I’m now concentrating on the forward paddle position as well as the timing. I did 50 perfectly synchronised paddle strokes to pumps today. Not with a huge amount of power and short strokes but I feel the foil and the balance now. These exercises allow progression to the next powered up stages. @@bleeper808I found around the 4 minute mark was the real game changer for me in the SUP mag video. Heli- watch how he bounces the board in a rhythm with the foil and board. Your set up will have its own rhythm. Focus on the pump not just the paddling. Then add the stroke back in at different rhythms. Maybe one stroke for each 4 pumps. Then double the cadence to 1 stroke strokes for every 2 pumps and then finally one stroke per pump. This drill really helped me keep pumping hard when I was paddling hard. It’s really easy to lose pump intensity as you paddle harder but the drill reinforces a ‘pump first paddle second’ mentality. It’s the pumping that’s going to artificially reduce your hull length and allow you to go faster…

Thanks Elliot. Early days the breathing was something so far back on the list of things to think about but now I’m starting to find some continuity in my paddle and pump I’m able to think about other things. Got a 20 stroke run today which is insane compared to 5-6 last week. The shimming probably won’t work. Need to really bounce the board to work the foil but slightly faster board speed will get it working without really sinking the tail. However, nothing is off the table lol Hope you are getting out on the water lots matey. 👍

@@heliboy999fly You can do it! Try and build enough speed to get the board skimming across the water (only works when you properly unweight yourself while pumping). That‘s when the board will accelerate enough to get onto foil. At that point you have to adjust your paddle cadence to the foils „pumping rhythm“ - larger foils generally have a slower pumping cadence..

@toms74094tsАй бұрын
I wouldn’t worry too much about the tail sinking slightly. As soon as you paddle it’ll sort itself out. Much better than nose diving every stroke! You’ll crack this if you keep at it. For info I’m riding an axis 1310 and have the mast middle or slightly rear of the box. Moving it forwards will make it the nose lift earlier and stall, you’ll be standing further forwards to compensate for this and hence too far forward on the board which causes nose diving.
@heliboy999flyАй бұрын
Excellent! Thanks. That was what I was thinking was happening. I did feel more comfortable and stable with the foil more rearwards.
@toms74094tsАй бұрын
Can you get your stance further back on the board? I have the same board as you at 97kg. My front foot is at the centre of the footstrap inserts for flat water paddle ups with the back foot on top of the mast. If you move back on the board it will stop it nose diving every stroke. All that water coming over the top of the board is really slowing you down and pushing you back down into the water surface…. Oh BTW keep at it as you’re making good progress. It’s taken me 9months to get first proper flat water paddle ups! Also well worth looking at a few months coach Casey subscription!
@heliboy999flyАй бұрын
Thanks for the info. I have tried standing back further and I felt the tail sinking and dragging. I’m thinking in need to be forward until I have a bit of speed then inch back? I’ve recently moved the foil forward which seems to make the nose dive more and it’s also more unstable. So many variables. Will check out Coach Casey.

Take video to compare each week and see improvements. If you hit a flat spot in progression, reach out to the groups and ask for feedback. Get a longer and narrower board and you will be up instantly (min. 8'6" - 9') You will be able to put down a lot more power without pushing the nose under water, since the board will and feel alot more stable in pitch axis. Also the the glide and efficiency of the longer waterline will accelerate so much faster with less effort so you still have some juice left in the arms to dig deep when the board is off the water to keep pumping and not get a heart attack once you are up. It's a night and day difference no one can imagine without feeling it.

Thank you It’s the only board I’ve tried as it was all that was available last year. No idea if it’s easy or hard to release. I just hope it lifts eventually. I’m guessing this is going to be power overcomes lack of skill and technique at first. Once I get to the next stage of getting the foil to work, it will be yet another learning process. The foil is probably the best I can get for me weight but I’m. Thinking a longer and narrower board would be better. Unfortunately I’m always at the start of these things ( kiting, Windfoil and winging) so I just have to use what’s out there. The board is a year old now with many hours of use and lots of miles of winging too. It’s got some dings and scrapes but it’s actually doing better than expected for such a light board. The box is holding up to using a huge foil too. I think losing 10 kgs will be a bigger help in the future. That’s a time issue. Hopefully fitness and technique will meet at the ideal weight and flight will occur. 🤞

I'm giving this a go -- born in 1950 -- oh, to be in my fifties or even sixties again. This sport is tough. I didn't have much of an issue standing on a 7" 2" by 20" board (while on your knees use the paddle to get the board moving forward and then stand up while using the paddle and then try to keep the paddle in the water to maintain balance) -- anyone wanting to try this, should, in my opinion, buy a good balance board and practice, practice and practice some more. I've graduated to riding the balance board on a very hard rubber ball about the size of the ball you throw for your dog -- going from riding a cylinder to a ball is like going from checkers to three dimensional chess. I can now launch and "ride the ball" for a couple of minutes straight - it's all about patience and commitment. Now that it's getting warmer where I live it's time to take this to the water and work on technique. My window of opportunity is rapidly closing so it is now or never for me. Hell boy999 -- great inspirational video about discipline, patience, attitude and approach -- it's the hard things that are worth trying because it builds character and if you're successful, the rewards are great -- plus you learn so much about yourself and you learn to appreciate the skill and fortitude of others.
