Bon Appetit did a video on these guys, they're cooking with Kerosene so the amount of heat is amazing.

Great video! I grew up and lived in Kwun Tong in the 70s, and played in the Yuet Wah playground when I was a kid. I would not call that area poor. Back in the days it would have been an area for the middle income families. Yes, there are some very old public housing - 50 plus years. It looks reasonably maintained.

You can't walk on the sidewalk at night. Restaurants set up chairs and do business. They stare at people walking on the sidewalk. They park their motorcycles sideways and charge parking fees. If you try to avoid them and walk on the road, the motorcycles honk at you to get out of the way. If you go sightseeing, you have to learn how to cross the road while avoiding the motorcycles. If you take a taxi because it's inconvenient to walk, you have to worry about the exorbitant fare. Roads where tourists can walk comfortably. If India's infrastructure and motorcycle traffic culture don't change, the country will become more and more backward.

With all those station entrances and tunnels under the streets leading to the platforms, it's almost like a separate city underground, which mimics the streets above. If it weren't for the fact that everyone is on their way to somewhere else, it would make sense to put storefronts on all those tunnel walls and add a third more retail space to the city.

I'm considering a family trip to Hong Kong in the next couple years and while researching places to stay/go in Wan Chai, and trying to figure out how to connect to the MTR, I was consistently led on Google Maps to that one particular entrance to the Wan Chai MTR station on Lee Tung St, but I had the hardest time locating it because it is marked wrong on Google Maps. I finally figured out where it was, but it was frustrating because Google Street View didnt have a good view of the station entrance. So , I type "Wan Chai Hong Kong" into KZbin and up pops this video, and within minutes, a perfect view of the MTR station entrance i was looking for. Thank you for this great perspective of the neighborhood. When I finally do visit, I will feel like I have been there before.

It’s stuck in the past. Too many ads, crowded and noisy trains.
@walkinginhongkong13 күн бұрын
crowded- but people are moved very efficiently. noisy trains-if you're talking about the PA system, I'd prefer this over metro's without. too many ads-helps pay for excellent service. I'd be interested to know what a metro in the present looks like.

I hope NYC's MTA subways could one day be like Hong Kong's MTR in a way of efficiency..
@walkinginhongkong17 күн бұрын
I was in NYC a couple of years ago and got to experience the subway. I like that its extensive and open24 hours but the state of the facilities have degraded so much that there's definitely safety risks and hygiene issue. I hope it gets fixed as NYC is one of my fave cities in the world.

causeway bay one of the shorter ones actually, just depends on where you exit. if Times Square exit then yes, quite long. but Sogo or Hysan place exits quite are quite short :)
