What about side light bulb underneath it?
@BigglesКүн бұрын
The sidelight bulb is above the indicator bulb. You will see the back of the block connector for both. Locate the sidelight bulb as described and twist the holder clockwise about 1/8th of a turn, then pull the bulb holder out. Then you can simply pull the sidelight bulb out of the holder and replace. Refitment is the reverse of disassembly. If you need to disconnect the holder completely, press down on the metal spring of the power connector and pull the connector off.

V. Useful video, thanks! Incredibly fiddly job. Spent 15 minutes trying to replace the rubber mould only to find I had it on the wrong way! One thing: I found snipe pliers very useful for helping get the block connector out.
@Biggles16 күн бұрын
@@brokenfinger68 Thanks for the comment! I think these days on some of the older cars the plastic connectors have become harder and more brittle, which makes removal harder than when I tackled this job. Gently using pliers is a good idea, but you need to be careful not to break the plastic.

You mentioned primary tensioners. Where are they? 😮
@Biggles27 күн бұрын
@@robertbaumann4742 They are further down the timing case, and push on the long timing chain guides to take the slack out of the chain. They and the plastic on the chain guides can fail. These days if I was doing this job, I would replace all the chains, guides and tensioners in one go. It’s a much bigger job, but the end result is so much better.

Impossible to push the metal spring open - so all these videos are wrong. What works is: to use one of your fingers as a hook an pull it easily out.
@BigglesАй бұрын
@@ping2dk I don’t understand the “impossible to push the metal spring open” comment. What with all the comments saying the video helped viewers complete the task and the hundreds of thousands of views, “all these videos are wrong” is a bit of a stretch in my view and hardly constructive. Have you considered the possibility that it was, for some reason, you who wasn’t able to push the metal spring open as opposed to it being physically impossible? It is a frustrating job given the tight space you have to get your hands into.

Does anyone know how to help me with my xj61997? What is the correct oil for the engine? The alarm, even though it is set and beeping, the light comes on but it still does not lock the doors. And locking the key locks all the doors. The radio turns on normally but there is no sound coming from the speaker. I've tried everything and nothing has resolved it.
@Biggles2 ай бұрын
I recommend Castrol GTX 10W-40 semi-synthetic engine oil for these cars, for most climates. Your location might affect the choice though. For the first problem, I suspect you have a fault in the remote key fob. The buttons can get damaged. The original radios on these cars are old now and can fail spontaneously, even if they still turn on. Another possibility is a faulty amplifier. I recommend trying a different radio temporarily to narrow down the fault.

Hey mate, I have a 94 XJR6 with the same issue. How many hrs did it take to replace the headgasket and get it running again? I need to take it to a Jag shop but dont want to get ripped off if they over estimate the labour costs. I dont trust mechanics to do the right thing labour costs wise sadly in this day and age.
@Biggles2 ай бұрын
I have encountered a similar problem. Many garages in the UK prefer not to do large jobs these days because of concerns over liability. The only route I could suggest is to find a known specialist who someone can recommend to you. Even then I've heard too many cases of the "reputable" garage subbing the work out to someone else. This leads to problems doing the job properly. Talking to some professional mechanics, there isn't enough money in fixing cars for an average garage anymore for the hassle it causes with customers. They prefer just to MOT test cars instead. This is why I do as many mechanical jobs myself as possible. The head gasket job was done over a weekend, but I did have the gearbox out at the same time, and it was my first time replacing the head gasket on one of these. It should be easily doable in a day by a professional. Note I was working in a cold, cramped garage, so not an ideal working environment. You really need that special tool to lock the cam shafts. A non-specialist mechanic will not have that tool.

Good video but it misses one important tip for the re-assembly: put the bulb in same way old one was (with two pins in the sides and one on top) and then put the rubber gasket on by itself, it will be super easy to press the white connector back into position. i tried to seat the connector in the rubber first and then push both back in, it was very hard and didnt work, then i put the rubber on first and it was perfect position to reattach the wires. also these are almost 20 years old now, be very careful with the wires, they break off easily and then you're screwed, gotta re-attach them
